SECRETS: Sometimes Gramercy feels like she's in over her head and becomes extremely overwhelmed with everything. She hides it well since she's quite the public figure but her fears have manifested themselves as dreams. She dreams she's drowning in the middle of the ocean with no one around and all she can do is fall further below the surface and into the unknown.
PERSONALITY: Gramercy is a very charitable person. In fact, her entire career revolves around charity work. She's the creative director of a national foundation for a specific and rare heart defect. She's the sweetest woman on the planet but she's also the most driven and determined woman as well. She knows what she wants and she chases after it. She would not consider herself "wild and free" though she can appreciate the sentiment. She wants too much from life to spend it on a beach or whatever famous people are getting paid to do these days. Some might consider her a bit of a workaholic but when work is that much fun, it's easy to be swept up by it. Gramercy isn't exactly the most girly of girls. She's in fact, a little clueless when it comes to love and romance. Her last boyfriend back home, had been flirting with her for months before he finally just confronted her and she had been stunned. Oblivious is probably a better term for Gramercy. She is by no means naïve, she just has other things on her mind. In New York now, she's hoping to open her horizons a little more but she's not expecting miracles in her personal life.MOTHER: Nanette Church & fifty one.

HISTORY: Nanette named her sweet little girl Gramercy for the simple fact that she had always wanted to see the neighbourhood and the park in New York City in person. The city had been in just about every single one of her favourite movies and it was something she'd wished for since she herself was a little girl. She never thought she would ever get there so naming her little girl after it was the next best thing in her mind. Nanette compromised the unique name choice with her husband, Paul by agreeing that he could pick out her middle name. He knew exactly what he was going to pick; Bowie. David Bowie was by far one of his favourite artists in the world and had hoped to one day name a child after him. He had hoped it would be a first name but it was clear that Gramercy was going to be their only child. Nanette hadn't told Paul about her condition immediately. It wasn't something that should have been brought up during a first date and though they'd been together for a couple years before Nanette told him that she wasn't even sure if she would be able to have children. Paul loved her and told her it didn't matter, they could always adopt, which was absolutely true. They were married the following year, proving his love for Nanette was strong. It came as a total shock when she found out she was nearly four months pregnant.
From then on it was immediate bed rest, weekly checkups and an extremely strict schedule. She couldn't lift a thing heavier than her drink glass as far as anyone was concerned. Nan found it irritating and extremely frustrating but she understood where everyone was coming from. She wanted her baby to live; even if she didn't. Carefully, without lifting a finger, she ordered everything for a nursery, created a room that she would want to spend her night's in, sitting in a rocking chair in the corner with a blanket and her sweet baby in her arms. At seven months along, Nan sat down and wrote out so many letters to all her friends, Paul and their baby girl, as they'd finally found out the gender. Most were directed to Gramercy. She explained why she picked the name, told her why her father picked out her middle name and thoughtfully wrote down all the advice she wished she would be able to tell her baby girl in person. She didn't know if that would be possible. It was probably morbid but she wanted her daughter to have the advice of a mother. She titled each of them for each of the important moments she would need them for and then took the time to write out a few for her wonderful husband. Paul and been true to his word and had loved her through it all, not once ever even considering leaving his wife.
He had been terrified she wouldn't make it through the pregnancy but he was trying to be strong for her. The letters to him were about the letters for Gramercy, asking him to take her to the neighbourhood she'd been named after when she was old enough, to not let her keep him from finding love again. She told him that she would always love him but that she wants him to be happy so when he was ready, she gave her permission to find love again. Now this letter was morbid but Nanette had needed to get it all out there and sorted. She wanted her family to know they were loved. When the day of Gramercy's birth rolled round, Nanette hadn't been expecting it and had collapsed at home with the pain of a contraction. Paul had panicked about it all but their friend had also been there and he'd managed to keep a level head. John had been the one to get Nanette into the car, told Paul to get the bags they would need and he was the one that drove through their quiet, sleepy seaside town to the hospital where their family and friends gathered. It was a hard process and no one knew if Nanette would survive. After a quiet six hours, the doctor came out to inform them of Gramercy's birth. Nanette was in the hospital another four months in a medically induced coma. Her body needed to heal and for that, she needed time. Paul hated that it felt like he was a single parent because Nanette was in the hospital still but one visit saw her sitting up and yelling about her baby. From there, she grew stronger and was able to return home after that four month stay.
It was slow and steady at first but Gramercy doesn't remember any of that. Her first and fondest memory is sitting on the beach with her mama, building a sandcastle, laughing and giggling as she threw the sand around and got it in her hair. From what she could remember, her childhood was pretty normal. She took dance lessons, piano lessons and played three different sports. She was a cheerleader, going on to nationals and bringing home the first place prize for that her captain year. They saw internationals but they placed second. Still it was impressive and Gramercy left high school with way more accomplishments than anyone expected and her mama there for them all. Moving on to college, Gramercy didn't know what she wanted to do with her life, she honestly feared that she'd peaked in high school. But she hadn't needed to worry. She took a year away from school to travel and work and spent six months doing both. It was during this year that she'd come up with the idea creating something for people to enjoy that would allow her to raise money and awareness for her mother's condition, which was rare enough to go under the radar. She started locally, with a fun run and bake sale. The whole event exploded thanks to the close and personal experiences of not just the family but the town in general. Nanette was a beloved grade school teacher. From there, Gramercy planned bigger events and created a foundation to bring awareness to the masses and raise money for research. She chose a business major when she finally went to school, still organising all these events with her friend's and family's help. It was during these following years that she caught the eye of the CEO of another foundation with the same plans and purposes. While they had the money and the research labs and all that side of things, they didn't have the creative initiative that Gramercy had and so they proposed a merger of sorts.
Gramercy would be co-founder of the new and improved foundation and she would run the charitable side of things while her new partner would stick to the research side. He was the scientist after all. His wife hadn't been as lucky as Nanette; she hadn't survived their surprise childbirth and Thomas was left with a motherless son. Lutembacher's Syndrome was a rare congenital heart disease and though there were plenty of foundations and charities for heart disease, Gramercy and Thomas wanted to bring this specific one to light. Nanette had heart surgery when she'd been a newborn that was supposed to fix the problems they found minutes after her birth. And for the most part0 it had. She'd been told when she was older, as she was always at the cardiologist, just in case, that she would be wise to consider not having children. She might not survive the process that was childbirth. Nanette agreed, of course, and just wanted to live her life. It sucked, sure, that she couldn't have kids but she understood the risks; which was why she was so shocked when she found out she was pregnant. Gramercy didn't want to take all that could have happened lightly because her mother decided she would have her. So she agreed to the merger, which came with a move to New York. She was just barely graduated from the local college, having been after a degree without much concern about where she'd gotten it from as she hadn't planned on searching out a career with it. She'd planned from the beginning of undertaking a business degree to use it for her own foundation. To her, it hadn't mattered in the least if she'd even ever gotten that diploma but it was best to learn to use the skills and the best way, in Gramercy's mind, was school; so she'd gone.
Her move to New York was a process in itself. She did a road trip with her parents to go up and see the city, find an acceptable apartment. She was making quite a bit of money thanks to everything and used that to find herself a nice apartment in a good neighbourhood. They toured the city, and Gramercy was pleased to have been able to bring her mother to the neighbourhood she loved from all her favourite films. It was a bit weird, however, introducing herself as a well known, excessively posh neighbourhood. She absolutely loved her name and didn't back down from the cracks made at her expense or her mother's. Instead, she handed her card over with a polite smile and walked away. Her mother's story was right there on the main page of the foundations website, along with Thomas's wife's story. The happy ending and the sad so people could get a feel for what it was like, from both aspects. Having now been in the city for only a few months, Gramercy is excited to continue exploring her new surroundings and finding those little places that only the locals really knew about.
