DISLIKES: bullies, people who try to silence her, jokes falling flat, bad guys winning, hopelessness, being around her parents, early mornings, hangovers, spicy food, real fur, whiny men, feet hurting heels, spearmint toothpaste, melted chocolate, bitchy attitudes, hiccups, people mispronouncing her name, blackcurrant juice.
FEARS: large spiders, being lost forever, being trapped in a fire.
SECRETS: She’s ‘daddy’s girl’ for all the wrong reasons. When she was eight she walked in on her dad with another woman and since then he’ll do anything and give her anything to keep her happy, afraid that she’ll speak up about the dirty little secret she was just too young to quite understand. What he doesn’t know is that when she was older, her mother admitted to knowing about her father playing away after drinking too much wine, and told Aloy that she hadn’t been entirely faithful herself. For that whole reason, Aloy prefers to keep her distance now from the both of them, opting to only go home with her cousins and for the holidays.
PERSONALITY: Aloy is outspoken and, at times, abrasive. She is in no way afraid to say what she’s thinking, and her opinionated attitude has alienated others in the past. A proud feminist, Aloy is the type to fight for the underdog at all times, and plans to spend her life doing just that and protecting people’s rights. She’s fiery and passionate, with what seems like an endless supply of energy. Strong, she’s developed a recent interest in fighting and MMA, and has taken it up as her hobby. She’s something of a wildchild, which she blames on being the youngest girl in the family; she can party until dawn and then nurse her hangover in a 9am lecture on human rights law. She’s proud, and very intelligent, just as quick-witted as the rest of her family. She’s quick-tempered, ready to jump up and fight for anyone who she sees who might need it. Her words are her weapon of choice, but she’s been in plenty of scraps through the years to know how to win a fight, too. Aloy is probably also the most fickle when it comes to love. She knows the relationship between her parents is a sham, and that’s kind of disillusioned her. She’d rather have a no-strings-attached hook up or break things off when she gets bored than risk being trapped in a game where everyone is playing each other. So she’s a minx, coming across flirty and devilish, but really there’s a part of her that needs fixing.MOTHER: Stefan Cole Garvin, 54.

HISTORY: Harriet and Stefan met at the country club, and fell in love during a winter dance. They were inseparable from their youth and had a lavish wedding with all their family and friends. Soon after they had their first born, and while Harriet spent the next few years focusing on raising their little boy, Stefan was off working at a law firm, climbing the ranks. He would eventually make partner, but only after their surprise child came along, Aloy, eight years after her older brother.
Aloy grew up with her cousin Andromeda, too. Aloy didn’t learn why until she was much older. By then though, Rome was just another part of the big family, another cousin that Aloy ran circles around. She was the baby girl in the family, so found she got away with more, and no one seemed to be able to keep up with her energy levels anyway. Aloy was the wildchild who would run off, climb the trees and skin her knees doing all the things her parents specifically asked her not to do. She saw those words as a challenge though, a dare to try and overcome. Typically, Aloy succeeded.
Aloy was daddy’s little girl when she grew up, but not for the reasons one might think. In fact, to begin with Stefan thought of Aloy as a nuisance, always running around screaming when he was making important phone calls, or climbing trees and ripping expensive outfits someone had bought for her. However, when Aloy was eight she ran into a room that was shut off to her normally, during a game of hide and seek with her cousins. Inside that room she saw her dad embracing another woman. She was just too young to understand how wrong it was, and didn’t catch on to what it implied until she was older, but Stefan panicked that Aloy might talk. He wanted on her good side – always – and proceeded to buy her gifts, give into her demands, and generally be a doting father like he’d never been before. He didn’t want his infidelity to get out, or let the family find out that his marriage to Harriet had stopped being sunshine and roses a long time ago.
In school she was the one who annoyed the teachers with her hyper personality and how she would speak up and question them until they were out of answers. She often got handed detentions just for being so outspoken and opinionated. She wasn’t really a typical troublemaker, but there were times when she would skip a class because there was something more interesting going on somewhere. Aloy just enjoyed living her life, and she believed that sometimes that had to happen outside of a classroom, far away from the desks and teachers.
Aloy was seventeen when her mother was drunk one night when Aloy stumbled in late after she ought to have been. It was nothing unusual, but typically there was no one else awake to catch her. Harriet had gone through a rough evening though, and buried herself in a bottle of wine to help herself through. She encouraged her daughter to come and join her, and although Aloy didn’t drink with her because wine revolted her, she did sit and listen. It was then she discovered that Harriet knew all along about Stefan’s cheating ways. It was an open secret between them and she herself had participated in a fling or two over the years once the children had been old enough to take care of themselves. Aloy was shocked, and slightly disgusted. The marriage was a sham, just a front, and she went to her bedroom not really knowing what was real about her homelife anymore.
From then on, Aloy chose to distance herself from her parents. They were fakes, just playing a game because it suited them. It wasn’t something she wanted to be a part of, or aspire to. Instead, Aloy focused on her future, and getting out of California. The cousins she grew up with had all gathered in New York, and she wanted to join them. New York felt like her way of life – non-stop, wild, spontaneous – so she applied for colleges out there and found herself accepted to NYU where she surprised everyone by studying Law. She wanted to speak for those without a voice though, and challenge others. She might not appear so, but Aloy was smart, it was just hidden under that wild, fiery exterior.
A sophomore now, and holding down a job her cousin Andromeda helped her get, Aloy is loving New York. She forgets to call her parents all the time, and has secretly, and recently, taking up MMA as a new hobby. She’s terrible at it, but it’s fun to her, even if she’s bruised and sore, and not exactly walking away in a good state. Aloy very much believes in the sentiment behind YOLO, though you will never ever hear her say that acronym.
