THAYER RHODES FINCH
FULL NAME: Thayer Rhodes Finch.
NICKNAMES: Finch, and family or old friends call him Thay.
AGE: Twenty-Nine
GENDER: Male
SEXUALITY: Straight.
STATUS: Single.
GROUP: Citizen.
GRADE: N/A
MAJOR: N/A
JOB OCCUPATION: ActorHAIR: Brown, short but not necessarily neat. He can’t be bothered with it most of the time, so keeping it short is the best way to ignore it.
EYES: Brown
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: He had a bit of a rough and tumble childhood during which he collected plenty of scars, but most are faded or forgotten about now.
TATTOOS: His body is covered in tattoos. He gets a new one for every memorable event and has been adding to his collection since he was sixteen. There’s too many to count, some simple, some cryptic, but all in black ink, covering his body. He can hide almost all of them when he wants to, which is nice because sometimes he has to for work, or he just likes shocking people when he drops the façade from work.
PIERCINGS: None.
PLAY-BY: David Alexander Flinn!LIKES: Costumes, tattoo studios, questionable bars, Rockabilly, mix-match suits, whiskey, jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, his collections, refurbing furniture, grungy art, pool, beat up old cars, pocketknives, keeping his hands busy, toffee, walking aimlessly, lizards, thunderstorms, swing dances, city life, charity volunteering, chilli fries, sushi.
DISLIKES: Humid weather, explaining himself, chores, meatheads at the gym, hiccups, scented candles, baths, not being able to help people, bobbleheads, sour sweets, movies buffering, watching the news, artificial flowers on graves, violent drunks, too quiet nights, plain rice, milk – unless it’s soy, matching socks, Play-Doh.
FEARS: Developing Huntington’s, bobbleheads, earthquakes, .
SECRETS: He a genetic carrier for Huntington’s Disease. His mother died from the condition, and there’s a chance that one day even Finch will develop the disease. He’s not afraid to tell people his story, but this is the reason why he’s made the conscious choice to not have children of his own, but he’s open to adoption and foster care. Still, this is not so much a secret for him, but he’s wary of who he tells since he doesn’t want sympathy or their pity. He made the choice himself, and he’s aware of that.
PERSONALITY: Finch is a passionate man. He doesn’t do anything half way, and he won’t waste time with something he can’t commit to completely. He’s a helpful guy who can’t walk by someone in need without checking on them first. Finch recognises his imperfections, and embraces them. He accepts he’s not perfect, not a model human being, but he tries to be a decent guy in the city of New York. He’s something of a fun loving guy, who understands that life can be too short to dwell on the stress of the little things. Money isn’t everything, and Finch would rather spend his time keeping his hands busy with craft tasks that pique his interest, and by being out in the city with friends, just living his life and forgetting that it can suck sometimes. In his opinion he can fix a bad day if he wants to. He’d rather be an optimist who lives life somewhat impulsively than anything else. Finch will fight to protect and defend those he cares about, and the wide circle of friends he has means the world to him. Finch considers them priceless, and he’ll walk to the ends of the earth or jump in front of a bullet for that loyalty. He’s known trouble, but it’s mostly been for helping friends out, or defending them when trouble has kicked off after too many drinks. He’s a happy flirt, but even the girls he could have loved have left when they realise their happy, perfect family image isn’t something Finch will offer them – at least not in the conventional sense. However, Finch is a man who is all about being surprising; he likes keeping people on their toes and making them laugh. And he doesn’t see a single thing wrong with being unconcentional.MOTHER: Maria June Finch, deceased.
FATHER: John Grant Hunter, 64.
SIBLINGS: Carly Nell Finch, 19 (half-sister).
OTHERS: N/A.
PETS: Shiba Inu called Shelly.
HOMETOWN: Boston, Massachusetts.
HISTORY: Maria and John were just a casual hook up. He drank at the bar where she worked, and from time to time they took that friendship back to her small apartment two blocks away from the bar. It was never meant to result in a pregnancy, but when it happened, Maria was determined to do right. She had been something of a disappointment all of her life, but she had been raised with decent enough morals to know that her baby deserved a decent shot at life. She looked for a better job than a small, grungy bar, and found work as a checkout girl at a local grocery store. It was day shifts, a steadier income for her, and came with less sleazy guys wanting to flirt. John was shocked as hell when Maria broke the news to him. He wasn’t the type of man who ever thought he’d be a father, but he wanted to give a shot at it. They were never a couple – they knew that would never work out – but they made an attempt at going to the appointments together, and getting their apartments set up for the arrival of their son.
Nothing good lasted long in Marie’s life though. John wasn’t made for fatherhood. He didn’t handle the typical baby crying moments very well, and spent very little time looking after his son. Instead, he was interested in replacing the friends-with-benefit relationship he had once held with Maria. She hadn’t been interested in continuing their casual arrangement because she thought that Thayer needed something more stable in his life to look up to.
Finch ultimately grew up in a single mother household, seeing John once every few months for a weekend. He wasn’t a father by any great means, but he paid some kind of attention, which Maria told him was better than not at all. Finch was nine when his little sister was born.
Maria had Carly with her then boyfriend, but he wasn’t interested in sticking around for responsibility. He hadn’t been bothered by Finch because the little boy was often outside, or came home and went to his room to play video games on the Gameboy he had. The thought of a baby and having to raise a child had him running for the hills though. Maria was strong, and she had no problem being a single mother to another child.
Carly would be lucky to have her older brother around in the years to come though. When Finch was twelve, there were signs that not all was right with Maria. Doctors ordered tests, and the tests concluded that the single mother was suffering from Huntington’s Disease. Finch began doing more around the home, taking on more responsibilities to help out his mother with his sister as she came to terms with the fact that her life had completely changed. Maria had grown up in care homes, both of her parents dying when she was a teenager after a car crash only she survived. She hadn’t heard of the disease within the family and Maria had lost contact with other relatives when she had bounced between foster homes and care homes before leaving the state she had originally grown up in. Both children were tested and found to be carriers of the genetic markers, but it was no guarantee that either of them would develop Huntington’s at any point in their lives.
As he grew older he began to realise that it was important to laugh, and to have fun. The bad days were downright awful, but the goo days that they shared as a family were the best his mother had. He wanted to fill her life with those rather than the what ifs, the endless doctors appointments and the countless worries. Finch helped Carly with school work and did what he could at home. He got a job at sixteen in one of those gimmicky restaurants where the servers were in character constantly, but found that he oddly enjoyed that as well as having a natural talent for performing. There was little time in his life for extracurricular like school plays, so this was the first time he’d really had a stab at acting, but he took to it like a fish to water, and interacting with people was a lot more fun for him than memorising full scripts and taking to a stage somewhere.
After school, Finch continued to work at the restaurant while caring for his mother. Her health had deteriorated, and other illnesses had manifested that weren’t connected to the Huntington’s. He was her carer as well as looking after Carly. Life continued that way, with Finch taking whatever courses or carrying out whatever adaptions were deemed necessary to look after his mother. Doctors recommended moving her into a care home several times, but Finch wasn’t going to abandon her somewhere she would just become another person in a bed while her body slowly shut down. He cared for her right up until the end when he was twenty-seven. She slipped away peacefully, with both Finch and Carly by her side, and even John had come back around to make sure they had all they needed. He was never the greatest of fathers to Finch, but he never completely abandoned him either. He helped him make the necessary arrangements, told him about things he didn’t know, and just lent a hand which Finch wouldn’t admit to needing at the time.
By the time everything was settled in regards to the estate and the funeral, Carly was finishing up high school and had accepted an offer to go to college in Florida. John asked Finch what he planned to do next, and with no real clue, he found himself looking at a whole world of possibilities. A night with friends ultimately pushed him towards New York City with them, since they were heading out there on a roadtrip before one of them headed off back to their next military tour. Finch got out to the city that never sleeps and quickly landed himself a job with an acting agency that catered for all kinds of events; they covered museum tours, Halloween specials, Christmas grottos, and educational visits. Finch was perfect for what they were looking for after his time at his previous restaurant, and they offered him some booster classes and courses to help round out his skills. He was grateful, and after crashing in a crummy motel for a few months as he took his first jobs, he found an apartment that was bare bones. He liked it; a blank canvas for him to with as he pleased.
He spent the time finding himself, using his apartment to basically do that. He took junk and turned it into art, and rehashed furniture into something new. Money and expense didn’t attract Finch. He’d rather take something cheap and broken and fix it up. He loves how his job is refreshing, changing every few weeks or months, and New York is an exciting place. Right now he’s still kitting out his guest room – or Carly’s room as it’s known since her last visit saw her sleeping on an airbed, but the two siblings are close even with the distance between them, and that is what matters to Finch. Carly is what he has left to look after in this world, and John checks in every other month to make sure Finch doesn’t need looking after. He’s a grown man who is nearly thirty, but Finch guesses having a dad around later in life is better than never.
