HISTORY: Born to a happy couple who met when they were both still young and foolish, Brynjolf was born in Trondheim, Norway. He was raised on stories of his ancestors after his grandmother completed their family tree, tracing their blood all the way back to the Viking age. Proud, and quickly fascinated by his Norse heritage, Brynjolf embraced it from a young age, just life his father before him. They were proud Scandinavians, fully involved in their culture, and Maven’s small café was popular with locals and tourists for the menu.
Bryn loved Trondheim. There was so much for him to grow up with, and when kids in his class mentioned seeing the world he was happy as he was in their hometown. So when his parents sat him down when he was seven and told him that they were moving to Stearns, Kentucky, he was devastated. He pitched a fit like no other. Brynjolf couldn’t understand why they needed to move all the way to America just because Aerun had been offered a well paid job out there. He was a chemical plant engineer, but a new piece of technology had made an older system completely defunct, and few were experts in how to upgrade and handle the replacement systems. Aerun was one of those few. America needed European engineers since that was where the newer materials were coming from, greener and more sustainable. Aerun would be travelling a little with his work, moving between a few plants, but the family wanted to settle in a small town with a community they could depend upon, which is why they chose Stearns. Plus, there was a diner not far off the highway that Maven planned to buy with the money made after selling her old café.
Their plans were put on hold when Maven fell pregnant though. The moving process was staggered, halted, and their daughter, Ylva, was born in Trondheim like her brother, and the family made the move to Stearns when Ylva was one. Aerun had gone ahead to ensure everything was ready since Bryn was still being difficult about leaving Norway, and Ylva had been a handful since she was born.
Nothing was simple after they moved. Brynjolf didn’t fit in with his peers and only became more determined to follow his hobbies and habits from back home. He was bullied by his classmates, teased for being so different. Ylva grew up idolising her older brother, taking his things and wanting to be like him. Everything changed when she went missing when she was four from the woods on a family picnic. A search party, and county wide and national hunt didn’t find her, until three years later. When she came home, Bryn vowed to never let anything happen to her again, and kept Ylva close. The age difference didn’t stop him from picking her up after school, and making sure that the boys who she hung around with were good enough for her. He never belonged in a one horse town like Stearns, even when he found himself developing the accent. To prove as much, he embraced more of his heritage, and went and pierced his skin to stand out from the country crowd more. He wanted to show that he wasn’t one of them,
That was why when it came to college, he opted to go to New York. He wanted somewhere different where he could find people like himself. He needed to get away from the small town life, even though he didn’t want to leave his little sister in case anything happened to her again. Brynjolf studied European History, going further to get his PhD in Viking and Medieval Norse Studies. It was during his freshman year that he got into mountaineering with some friends, and added it to the hobbies he already had. A ‘try before you die’ kind of guy, Brynjolf had a long list of unusual hobbies that kept him busy and stopped him growing bored. He had taken up a lot of them because he had hated Stearns so much. Axe throwing, as his father had taught him, was a good way to let out some of his frustration, but he was only allowed to do it in the back yard, and only when his father was around to supervise. Ylva threw knives and so he learnt that, too. When the family went home for what made up a month of the year, he snowboarded with cousins and other relatives. Basically, Brynjolf was out a lot, constantly doing something, planning something, or looking forward to the next thing he had planned. Quiet time was for his pyrography, but that was never a long lasting activity since neighbours knocked on to ensure he wasn’t burning the building down.
It was in college that he met Lovelle. He was in his senior year, working on his final paper and seeking out a catalogue he desperately needed. In the library he found Lovelle reading the catalogue in question and set about making his pleas to get it from her. He was comparing ancient hunting techniques with modern day equipment and ways, but needed a modern source, which was hard because the internet was deemed less reliable than hard copies by his professor. Aiming to stay on for his PhD, Bryn wanted to impress. He got to talking with Lovelle, discussing hunting, and why she had it in the first place, until the librarian’s glares became more than a warning. They left and took their interesting chat to the pub down the street. There Lovelle explained her dreams to open a shop, a range, and Bryn found it an exciting venture and decided he wanted in on it.
They met as often as they could to talk about these plans and to simply hang out together. Eight months after their first meeting, they went on a camping and hunting trip together, and it was there that they had their first kiss. He had liked her for a while, but since they were balancing college with business plans, he was trying to behave himself a little. In the end he just gave in. It was a good decision, and Bryn considered himself a slight fool for waiting like he did.
He was twenty-eight when they finally managed to open Kiss My Axe, but he was happier than ever. Not only did he have his girl and their range, but Ylva had moved to New York just after her nineteenth birthday, too. It meant he could worry less about her because she would be nearby, though when she mentioned her ambitions he found himself throwing things a lot more, and burning more patterns and art into the range and calling it decal. He fretted when she was gone, but work and Lovelle kept his mind occupied for the most part when Ylva forgot to skype him.
Thirty-two now, and Brynjolf has never been happier. He goes back to Norway for a month each year, staggering that time out when he can fit it. He’s crazy in love with Lovelle, and simply driven crazy by his sister who helps out (or hangs out) with them when she’s home and supposed to be writing. Him and Lovelle are considering opening another range and expanding their business while everything is good, and they’re doing well for themselves.
