SECRETS: She had her mother and step-father killed by Elise Morello when she was eighteen. It was a spontaneous decision and Aranea is entirely uncertain about whether it was the right choice to make.
PERSONALITY: This feminine beauty is so much more than just a pretty face. She’s smart with an edge of cunning. Aranea is charismatic and knows how to charm people if she wants; there’s a siren-esque quality to her that makes her perfect for her real job with Morello’s. Aranea is more than that, though. She’s happiest when she’s in a kitchen, elbow deep in pastry. Quiet, Aranea internalises everything because there’s a lot she knows she can’t talk about, so it becomes everything that she keeps inside now. She’s spontaneous, but overthinks things afterwards. In truth, she doesn’t belong in the dark world that Morello’s is the centre of. She’s mostly a good person who has just made some bad choices in anger and hurt. When she loses her cool she can be reckless and make rash decisions that she might come to regret later in her life. Aranea finds it easy to be flirtatious and fun, but because of her necessary need to be secretive, it’s impossible for her to make a genuine, lasting connection with anyone. That is what bothers her most, despite still being young. She worries it might be a permanent consequence of her role for Elise.MOTHER: Anja Lily Mansfield, deceased.

HISTORY: Simon didn’t go to Norway to fall in love. He was there with the company he worked for helping them to conduct meetings for business mergers. They wanted to branch out internationally and this was the first part of their expansion. Anja was someone he met when they were having celebratory drinks one night. When the company needed someone to act as an ambassador in Norway for them, Simon volunteered. He had an interest in returning since he had started a long distance thing with Anja. So, he moved there and their relationship flourished. Anja enjoyed what he had to offer and the potential of living comfortable for the rest of her life after they married in a beautiful spring ceremony. Aranea was born the following winter.
They were happy for the first five years, and Aranea was a spoilt little girl who wanted for nothing. Being an only child she was used to getting her own way. When she was five, Simon earned a promotion which took the family to America, to New York. They had a nice house, even more money coming in, but Simon was less willing to let Anja go on wild spending sprees and live the life of luxury she wanted. He tried to encourage her to get a job of her own, even a little part-time one to help her settle in to life in a new, strange place. Aranea was at school, so it seemed redundant to him for his wife to be lazing around the house all day when they had a cleaner coming in to help take care of the housework. Cracks appeared in the surface and fights started to happen. It grew worse when Anja paraded Aranea around like a precious little doll she could make up and dress up. She wanted to put her into photography competitions and modelling shoots, but Simon disagreed; he thought kids should be kids. Yes, he thought his daughter was beautiful, but he also thought she should be able to run around and play with her toys instead of primped and preened for Anja’s liking.
Aranea was eight when Simon divorced Anja. Her life became a mix of two homes and feuding parents. Anja wasn’t happy with what she got out of the divorce or the fact that she did need to work now to support herself. Not that it lasted for very long. She soon met and quickly married the wealthy Nigel Mansfield. He operated a small chain of successful coffee shops within the New York area, and beyond. Aranea never liked him. He treated her like a tiny child all the time and never let her do or touch anything in his home. Her father might have been a busy man, but at least he wasn’t afraid about something getting dirty or accidentally knocked over while she was playing.
As Aranea grew older, her mother grew unbearably worse. She always wanted to show Aranea off, put her in certain outfits and parade her in certain ways. She was constantly arriving at her mother’s home to be told she was signed up for something she had never agreed to, or that she was supposed to be somewhere to meet someone she didn’t even know. It seemed to be that Anja wanted to use her own daughter to make money, too. The only problem was that Aranea wasn’t willing to play along with her mother’s game. They fought and screamed, with Aranea up against both Anja and her step-father, Nigel. He was of the mind that she ought to show off her beauty, and also respect her mother’s wishes.
Aranea was popular in school. She had plenty of friends, was well liked, and her looks drew attention from her male classmates. There was, of course, the usual backstabbing and betrayal that came with high school popularity, but Aranea could deal with that better than she could deal with her mother. Her father supported her to make her own choices throughout her life, and helped her when she was confused or struggling. His job kept him busy, but he always had time for Aranea; she merely had to say the word for Simon to drop everything.
When Aranea turned eighteen, things spiralled. Her mother didn’t believe that ‘pretty girls’ should go to college. She hounded Aranea about living off her looks, going into modelling or simply finding her place with the rich and pretty. Anja genuinely thought Aranea would be wasting her life by going to school. She also had moments of despising her daughter because while Anja was getting older and losing her looks. Where she used to earn passing glances she didn’t anymore, and instead people looked towards Aranea instead. Even Nigel was caught looking at the young woman on more than one occasion, making Anja fear that her second husband was going to leave her for someone younger, prettier. Aranea even found herself cornered by her step-father on one occasion as he told her how beautiful she was. It creeped her out and Aranea would never be alone with him again.
It was immediately after this that her path crossed with Elise Morello. Aranea had broken her heel and Elise took the young eighteen year old where she shouldn’t have been, and bought her a drink. She charmed Aranea into spilling her problems, and getting her to reveal what she wanted most of all. In her youthful anger, she wished someone would get rid of her mother and step-father so she didn’t have to worry about them doing anything to her ever again. Elise told her it could be taken care of, but in return Aranea would need to work for her in her new restaurant that would soon be opening. Aranea, drunk and angry agreed, never truly thinking that three days later she’d be pulled out of class to be told that Anja and Simon had been found in the trunk of their abandoned car, suspected victims of a carjacking. Horrified, she tracked down Elise to confront her, but the cool, deadly woman merely told her she had only done as Aranea had asked. She reminded Aranea that if anyone discovered the truth she’d be punished too. She had no choice but to hold up her end of the deal. In time, Elise began to use Aranea how she had intended; to charm and beguile those who she wanted to lull into a false sense of security before scaring them, or worse.
Aranea’s situation forced her to stay in New York for school, but Elise promised that her bargain was a five year contract; they even signed on the dotted line to make the young girl feel better. It’s three years later, and although Aranea plays the role of a smiling student waitress well, the truth is far from that. She’s been dragged into Elise’s dark world and now serves to lure in those Elise seeks to hurt. Aranea gets through by reminding herself she has her culinary dreams still, and only two years left under Elise’s control. If Elise will let her walk away.
