HISTORY: Being raised by a single mother puts a whole different perspective on the world and life in general. It is something Hennessey learned early on that his family dynamic wasn't like the other kids in his class. His mother surprised his father with the news that she was pregnant and he surprised her with the news that he was married; a fact he'd kept from her through their two year relationship. He was some big wig who travelled a lot for work and it hadn't been uncommon for him to be gone a month at a time. As it turned out, those months when he'd been away, he'd been with his wife and their two children. Rosalie Germaine was not about to let the good for nothing back into her life. Harry sent money every month like clockwork, what he told his wife, Rosie never knew nor did she ever ask. She just didn't care as long as he helped to support the child he'd helped create; even if he never met their son. Rosie refused to move in with her parents, she had a good job in advertising, a nice house already at twenty eight and she knew she could care for her baby without the constant support. Her mother would help her out whenever she needed it but Rosie wanted to go this alone.
As it turned out, Mae Germaine was around a lot more than originally planned, and Rosie was extremely grateful that her mother ignored her constant remarks about going it alone. It had been so difficult to take care of that baby while she was still doing her job. Rosie had been younger herself when her own father died. He'd been a soldier and was killed in the line of duty. She'd always said if she was ever lucky enough to have a baby, she would name that baby after her father. When she found out she was having a boy, she knew exactly what his name was going to be and nine or so months later, Hennessey Maxwell Germaine came screaming into the world. He hadn't had a bad childhood, he hadn't wanted for anything but his mother also hadn't given in to all his silly requests. She had a rule about "the toys all his friends had"; if he still wanted it after a month, he could have it. Rosie never made Hennessey feel like he was missing out on some part of life because he didn't have a father. A father figure might have been nice, someone to ask the more awkward questions about girls and growing up from someone who'd experiences the same way he would but is mother read all sorts of books and asked her male friends things that she really probably shouldn't have because she wanted to have the answers to these questions her son was bound to have.
The rest of his childhood and teenage years were pretty normal for a Louisiana boy. At least, the first five years were great from what he could remember, anyway. Then they moved to Savannah, Georgia for Rosie's job and it was almost like coming home. Growing up just outside the city on what used to be a plantation was an active boy's dream come true. His grandmother, though not retired, chose to move along with them and finally open up that little bakery she'd been dreaming off since she'd been a little girl. It was fun and exciting. They bought a couple horses to ride around the property, they had ATVs and dirt bikes and though Rosie was a little wary, Mae was all for it. She always said Hennessey got his adventurous spirit from her. Rosie warmed up to it though and found herself gearing up right along with her mother and son. Eventually they stepped back and allowed his friends to play instead, letting him have his childhood.
He developed the same adorable little accent as the kids he was constantly around and Rosie thought it was the greatest thing he could have ever picked up. It wasn't until high school that Hennessey really started to think about what he wanted to do with his life. His grades weren't the worst out there, in fact, he was second in the class and good with that; especially since Rebecca Sinclair was the type that really needed to be top of her class, would probably have a heart attack right there on the spot if she ever found out that Hennessey was actually getting a better grade than her in one class but no one was willing to tell her for that exact reason. He kept his grades up, worked at his grandmother's bakery and still took the time to hang out with his friends and right the dirt bikes around his property, heading back to that old trail they'd created when they'd all be kids.
Though his family had money, Hennessey had wanted to try and get a scholarship for a top tier school. He had wanted to get in on his own merits and not because they had the money to toss in the school's face; especially since they didn't have the money that would be required for Columbia; his first choice school. By the time he'd left the school however, he would have had enough to pay the required tuition for ten students but that was something else entirely. When all the acceptance and rejection letters started coming in, only one really mattered to Hennessey and that one was one of the last to arrive. In the letter, he was told he'd gotten in on a scholarship and that they were happy to have him in. He thought it weird of course, giving a scholarship to a business student but Mae quite quickly reminded him that her business was doing much better in the last few years because he'd started up a website and added in promotions and specials and had all those social media things going on as well. Without him, her little business would have been a secret only the locals knew and loved. And by locals, she definitely meant friends of the family!
Rosie and Mae went up to New York with Hennessey and helped him settle in, making him promise a hundred times that if he didn't like it, he could return home no questions asked. It was funny and a totally new experience that Hennessey hadn't expected. He met his roommate that first day and they got on well, as if they'd been friends forever. Hennessey had planned on really cruising through college life, finishing up his degree and then doing something about the world at large. But an idea popped into his head one night that wouldn't let go and so he started to research and make notes and within a month, Hennessey who had a proficiency for computers and coding, and worked up an entire first draft of an app. He went online to chat sites for coders and things to ask for help with certain parts of the program but kept his plans vague. It took another month to finish it to what he'd been looking for and set it on the world. In all honesty, because it was also around finals when this happened his junior year, he'd forgotten all about it. Plus there were the parties and the nights out. So it wasn't until he'd gotten a check in the mail with a lot of zeros on the end of it that he remembered and took notice. His app had taken off and another few days say a letter in the mail from a company who wanted to purchase his app. It was all a bit surreal, never something he'd thought he'd go through in his life.
Hennessey called them up, booked in an appointment for the following week and walked out of the offices after it with millions to his name. He hadn't realised just what he'd been sitting on. It had been just a little thing to him, nothing he thought people would actually be interested in. There was also a contract, though he was told to take his time reading through it, that would offer him top dollar for anymore apps and ideas he had in development. He had Mav look through the contract since he would understand it better from the law's perspective. He got the business stuff and between them decided that it needed to have a time limit so he wasn't limited to selling only to that particular company. In the end, they agreed, though it took a bit of talking. Over the next two years, what he'd given them, he provided them with six more apps, leaving Hennessey with more money than brains upon graduation. It was pretty crazy but his grandmother told him in no uncertain terms that just because he had more money than brains, he shouldn't act like it. She wasn't afraid to knock him down if she needed to.
After graduation, he went to work, making a name for himself. His ideas hadn't slowed down and instead of selling them off, he instead became the CEO of his own business, running his apps himself. He dipped his toes in a couple different ponds, building up his name and his fortune. He was an enigma though, keeping his face from the papers as much as he possibly could, declining interviews with magazines, blogs, everything. Almost immediately after he'd graduated, Hennessey started a foundation to send kids who couldn't afford it to school for either business or computers, since he was quite the fan of both. Life was looking pretty damn good for Hennessey but nothing is ever as good as it seems. For Hennessey it took another couple years to figure that out. He was doing very well for himself and then they were out celebrating Maverick's twenty fifth birthday and life got a little bit better, having met Sophie waiting at the bar for the next round of drinks. They spent too much time talking but eventually, Hennessey gave her his number and left the ball in her court to continue to celebrations. It seemed like a whirlwind romance following their first meeting and even that night, Hennessey was thinking he could see his future with her. It was strange, he'd never been one to think of silly things like love at first sight but it was exactly that.
The following year was pretty good. They seemed to be doing damn good and Hennessey really was seeing a future. And then he found out he got the surprise of a lifetime; his father showed up on his doorstep. Harry Tiller had kept tabs on his son, wanting to make sure the boy was getting the money he sent. And since he was, Harry let it all go. He found out that boy was smart as a whip and wanted to go to Columbia on his own merits, which he could have easily, but he'd also wanted a scholarship, something that would have only come to him partially. Harry made a few calls, set it all up and requested that the boy believe it was all above board, as in it was a complete scholarship and that his only concern would be the books and supplies he'd need each year. His eldest daughter's car accident put everything into perspective for him and Harry wanted to get to know the son he'd neglected for all those years. He knew he was in New York so he told his wife he had busy in the East Coast and after kissing her goodbye, off he went. He at least had the intelligence to go to the hotel straight from the airport, freshen up and then headed right over to Hennessey's offices. As it turned out, his son was a busy man and wouldn't be seen without an appointment. That didn't matter to Harry, he knew where the boy lived and would just try again there. He went and knocked on the door a few hours later once he figured he would be home. He was and Hennessey thought he was lost or something and thought his front door was as good as any to figure out where the hell he was. When Harry introduced himself, Hennessey froze on the spot.
He'd had no interest in knowing who his father was at all growing up and the sentiment continued long after he'd become an adult. He'd had all that he'd needed growing up and that was good enough for him. And for this man who'd ignored him for his entire life to just show up and expect, well, Hennessey hadn't known what he'd expected but he wasn't getting it either way. His plan had been to just slam the door in his face and be done with it but Sophie had wandered to the front door, wondering what had taken Hennessey so long and invited the old bastard in. Irritation started there and only grew watching Sophie offer tea and coffee and the cake he'd picked up from the bakery that made him feel like he was back home again. He spent his time on his phone, messaging Mav about the surprise visitor he'd received. Having the man try and get his attention was laughable until he mentioned his education. Hennessey was outraged and demanded the man leave. If he wanted his money back, Hennessey would give it to him but that was all he would ever get from Hennessey.
It would take Hennessey a long time to want to even be in the same room as the man who provided half his DNA. He could understand where the man was coming from, having his daughter in such a horrible accident. But she'd lived so he still had his legitimate child and didn't need to acknowledge Hennessey. The following week saw Harry try to get to know Hennessey with Sophie's help and the pair get into more heated arguments. She had come from the All-American family and thought everyone should have, too. He didn't feel the same way, which led to the constant fighting. He was fed up with it all and just wanted to forget it all for a night at least. And that is exactly what happened. Mav dragged him out for a night that was spent with the pair of them getting completely shitfaced, returning to Mav's place and a good old fashioned rant about women in general. Everything about that night though was a blur for Hennessey and he woke up without any recollection at all about what happened. He could only remember what he was wearing because it was what he had to put it back on when he woke up the next day. He wouldn't have even done that except his assistant called about an emergency that wasn't even an emergency. He'd been too hungover to deal with any of it anyway and went from the office to his place to sleep it off. Thankfully Sophie hadn't been around.
Over the next week he and Sophie made up and things were starting to look up again. She didn't mention his father again and he appreciated it. There was nothing else to say. Life would move on and Hennessey knew Harry would forget all about him again. There was nothing for them to talk about. He continued on with his life, went out with friends, had dinner with Sophie and it was good. That night he'd spent drinking with Mav was still a total blank for a long time with only very small bits and pieces coming and going. He couldn't honestly tell which way was up about that night. All Hennessey knows is that he really needs to get back to Georgia for an extended visit. He went down for time here and there, able to work from the road as long as he had an internet connection but this time around, he was thinking more than a week or two; just so he could sort out everything that was creeping into his memories.
