PERSONALITY: Ford is a quiet man, who sort of fades into the background at most social events. He’s a humble guy who doesn’t want credit for most of the things he does. He does a lot, too, being a charitable and giving human, who wants to reach out to those who are less fortunate than himself. He knows what it’s like to be at rock bottom, and if he can help anyone get away from there he will. Ford is also incredibly intelligent and a hard worker. Now that he has a life he can be proud of, Ford is determined to do all that he can to keep it, and to prove that he’s earned it and worthy of it. He’s got a kind heart, and has no time in his life for selfish creatures or drama queens who delight in hogging the spotlight. Ford prefers to be comfortable in his own skin than to cater to the demands of others, and he’s strong enough to walk away from people who he thinks will be toxic in his life. He likes to be frugal when it comes to his own lifestyle, because he doesn’t see the point in expensive spending all the time (though a few things might be above his typical price range), and Ford would rather recycle something than toss it. He’s a peaceful guy, who as much as possible would prefer to avoid confrontation, though he’s realistic enough to know this isn’t always possible. If he has to fight, then he’s typical defensive and smart about it. Ford is not a troublemaker by any means. When it comes to love, Ford is a simplistic guy. He doesn’t want the drama or someone demanding. He prefers to spend his time with someone who can appreciate the same things as him, and enjoy meaningful gestures, like handmade gifts, or a home cooked meal.MOTHER: Caitlyn Diane Lowe, 57.

HISTORY: Caitlyn had never been a responsible person. She partied a lot, and struggled to hold down a job. Her sister, Samantha, often had to bail her out of trouble when she fell into it, and loaned her money which she never got back despite the promises that fell from Caitlyn’s lips. So when Caitlyn discovered she was pregnant after a one night stand with an old high school classmate, Samantha was surprised that she went through with the pregnancy. There was really nothing maternal about Caitlyn, and she wasn’t the type who later bonded with the baby. In fact, after giving birth to her son, Caitlyn often passes him over to Samantha and expected her to do most of the child raising. So when Ford was just four months old, Caitlyn said goodbye one evening and simply never came back. She sent a letter, explaining she wasn’t cut out to be a mother and that ‘the kid’ was better with Sam, but that was it. After that there was no contact, and no one would do anything because she had left of her own free will. Samantha had the choice to hand Ford over to the authorities to be placed into care, but she couldn’t bring herself to do it. She had already formed a connection with the little baby and while she had very little to give him, she wanted to be the one to raise him.
So, Ford grew up believing Samantha was his mother. She didn’t correct him, and it was simpler to allow him to believe in the ruse. She didn’t know how damaging it could be to let a little child know that his mother had run away because she was unable to do the job, or that he was the product of some meaningless fling. Instead Samantha told him that he didn’t have a daddy, but she loved him enough for two parents, and Ford seemed to roll with that. He never pushed for answers, or argued with details, and he was quite happy to be left by himself with his toys while Samantha got on with the housework or the mountain of neglected laundry.
Ford was the kid who kept his head down and simply got through his life. He was content, had a good couple of friends, and generally made good grades. There was little he got into trouble for. He grew tall, helped with chores, and did what he could to help out. He knew he wanted to work with computers, but didn’t know specifically until he was in college and studying Computer Science. He opted to go to New York, so he was still close to home, but also somewhere he could spread his wings and try to make it on his own. He knew he couldn’t rely on Samantha for everything, since they had only had a little when he was growing up. He had a job in the city just waiting on tables, but it was enough to buy his textbooks and keep food in his belly.
Ford hadn’t long graduated, and was looking for a job, when he got a call with the worst news possible. Samantha had suffered a heart attack at work, and it wasn’t looking good for her. By the time he got back to Philadelphia she had passed away. She had been his whole world, and in the trying weeks that followed, he discovered the hard truth that Caitlyn was his biological mother. She came back, and acted like vanishing all those years ago was no big deal, like the secret was nothing she ought to need to explain to him. Samantha had, at least, written a letter saying why she hadn’t told him and how she had always considered Ford to be her own.
He told himself he was going to be alright, but after returning to New York, he wasn’t. He slipped into a depression he couldn’t get himself out of, and he didn’t even think to ask for help. Slowly, his life spiralled. He lost all motivation to look for a job, and stopped going to the one he had at the restaurant. After that he was evicted and found himself sleeping rough on the streets. Ford simply stopped caring. He didn’t want to give a damn anymore. He moved through the city with very little, and then slowly let it get worse until he was found and hospitalised with very severe pneumonia. It had been four years of homeless shelters and failing to make anything of himself, but this time he got what he needed. Help.
Ford, with the help of a charity that targeted the homeless they could reach out to, found himself in a hostel, tidying himself up and catering to his health and wellbeing before he went back out to the world to find a job. At first he was an IT support officer, before gathering a bit of experience and applying to become an Information Security Analyst. He got a place of his own, and wanted to give back to help like he had been helped. He knew from his own experience that the best thing when he was on the streets was finding a decent meal, and so he found the investment to convert a rundown building into a food kitchen for the homeless and the poor. He ran it himself with a few volunteers, cooking healthy, hearty meals, and when the weather was bad heading out to serve in the likes of the parks and dish out coats and blankets that were donated. Ford wanted to help in all the ways he could, and when he wasn’t working at the job that paid him to find flaws and back doors in cyber security, he was focused on helping and improving the lives of those who had nothing.
