IGNIS LUCAN BELVOIR
FULL NAME: Ignis Lucan Belvoir.
NICKNAMES: Iggy
AGE: twenty-six
GENDER: Male
SEXUALITY: Straight.
STATUS: Single.
GROUP: Citizen.
GRADE: N/A.
MAJOR: N/A.
JOB OCCUPATION: Archivist at the Museum of Natural History.HAIR: Brown, short and tidy. Long enough on top to run his fingers through, cut slightly shorter at the sides just so it doesn’t turn into a colossal mess to deal with most mornings.
EYES: Piercing pale blue eyes.
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: He has one on his chin from a nasty slip on the ice when he was in college and on a date. He slipped as he tried to avoid a collision of first time skaters before him and ended up getting an ice skate to the face. It sounds grizzly, but Iggy insists it was his ego that took the brunt of the damage.
TATTOOS: None.
PIERCINGS: None.
PLAY-BY: Alex Elliot!LIKES: Cocoa, being in the stacks, hockey, ice skating, steamed veggies, fish, doing research, having a project to work on, hanging out with his friends, sessions at the gym, palm trees, wearing black, finding ‘surprises’ in the archives, cold nights, working late, feeding the birds, sweet energy drinks, travelling in the rain, his pocket knife, eating raw peppers.
DISLIKES: Cleaning pans, archives getting out of order, getting sick, talking about his family, cleaning his glasses, chocolate cake, rumours without facts, being an extra wheel, intruding on people’s plans, the dentist, liars, coffee – at all, dealing with angry drunk people, nail biting, wearing a suit when it’s hot, ticking clocks, crispy fries.
FEARS: Getting a call about his mother, the dentist, snakes.
SECRETS: He dresses almost always entirely in black because he’s severely colour blind and it makes his life easier. He also doesn’t make that public knowledge that he’s colour blind and he’s gotten pretty good at getting through life without it being a huge deal for him.
PERSONALITY: Ignis is a very intelligent man. He’s got the ability to memorise a lot of what he sees or reads, and while he doesn’t have an eidetic memory, his friends will joke that he can remember every little thing. He’s a practical guy, and a hard worker to boot. He loves to get his head into a project that can keep his busy for weeks at a time, and it’s not uncommon for him to stay late when he’s invested in a task. Iggy is a loyal friend, and he’s got your back for life if you have his. There’s really not much he won’t do for a friend in need, especially not after what some of his pals have done for him over the years. He’s calm, but a fast thinker in the face of panic or danger. Iggy isn’t the type to lose his head when everything is crumbling around him. He’s dedicated, and not the type to give up easily on anything; some might even go as far to call him stubborn, but Ignis will argue that he is, but only in the best way. He really doesn’t have much of a temper unless he’s putting people into line for being absolute idiots (and not in the best way). He gets rid of his bad moods and annoyances by seeing his friends and just having a good time in their company. He’s dry witted, which sometimes is so dry people think he’s actually serious, which amuses him more than anything. Iggy is something of a romantic, but he’s also got this self-doubt that sometimes makes him a little anxious about dating. He’s been through a lot; more than he shares, and he’s so used to being independent, that letting someone new into his life isn’t all that easy. Still, he tries, because he wants to fall in love. He’s more than happy to be a chivalrous gent, and spoil someone silly.MOTHER: Irene Monica Lane, 50.

OTHERS: Lomax Huntley Greene, 27, best friend.

HISTORY: Irene and Dominic never married, but they had been in love since high school, and they had their first son just a few years after they had graduated. Nixton was just a toddler when he fell very, very sick. The doctors were sure that there was much at all they could do for him, but Irene refused to let go of her baby boy. At the time she hadn’t long discovered that she was pregnant with their second child; another son. She began research, looking and talking for anything that might help save Nixton. It was then that she began learning all about how brothers and sisters could help each other medically. The doctors kept telling her that it wasn’t so simple, that such things were still very new, very delicate, but all Irene saw was a way to save Nixton with the child inside of her. She stopped seeing her second born as a baby, but rather as a cure. The only problem was that Irene didn’t rest at all during her pregnancy, or take care of herself properly. She went into labour early and had a stressful birth. Ignis was born sickly, and it took doctors some time before they were happy with his stats to let him go home. All Irene wanted was to cure Nixton, and when she heard that it wasn’t possible for a multitude of reason she slipped into a depression and refused to bond with Ignis.
Dominic had been working several jobs to keep on top of medical bills and household expenses. He didn’t neglect Ignis like Irene did though. Dominic carried on with the night time feeds, and took care of the baby boy when he was sick and not feeding properly. Iggy was a poorly infant – nothing like his brother, but being premature had repercussions that took years to make up for. He was prone to getting sick, and often a lot more lethargic than others his age. Irene was very distant from her second born, and when Nixton died shortly before Ignis turned two, she blamed the clueless toddler for the death of his own brother. In her mind Ignis was supposed to save Nixton and he had failed in every way. He hadn’t done anything for his brother, and his entire existence was a painful reminder of that. She didn’t want him around, and she started to neglect him, and drink to numb the pain.
If it wasn’t for Dominic, Ignis would have never known the love of a parent. However, Dominic worked a lot paying off the family debt, and doing his best to support the family. He was the janitor at the city library and then worked nights at the hospital as an orderly, too. He was often exhausted, but the few hours he had at home always started and ended with him checking on his son, ensuring he was okay and that everything he needed was there. Irene was often out drinking, or passed out on the couch with a bottle in hand. Dominic tried to explain her pain to the little boy, but it was so difficult for someone so young and innocent.
Ignis was in his first year at school when his teacher advised his father to take him for an eye test. He was struggling to see the classroom board during lessons and had been moved closer to the front. It was then that he started wearing glasses, and he also was discovered to have a severe version of the colour blindness known as tritanopia. Iggy had never known he saw the world differently to other people before then, but he saw everything mostly in shades of pink, turquoise and grey. His dad helped him when it came to homework, or sorting out his wardrobe so he didn’t wear clothes that clashed, or pairing up the wrong socks. It became easier as Ignis got older and he developed his own techniques and ways to get through the day to day life without drawing attention to himself or having too much of a struggle. For example, in his late teens he started doing a lot of shopping online where he could read the colour of the items, and he opted to stick to blacks and sometimes grey, just for ease – he could never clash them.
Iggy was a smart kid. He spent a lot of time at the library after school when his dad was there, and he put a lot of hours in on projects just so he could stay in his room away from his mother. Irene never recovered from the loss of Nixton, and when she drank she was prone to blaming Iggy all over again. She either cried, yelled at him, or passed out on the couch. Iggy held no bad feelings to his mother. He knew it had to be hard, but at the same time it was difficult to say he loved her because she had never done anything for him, been to any of his parent’s evening or science fairs. His bond with his father was much greater. If Ignis didn’t feel like being at home, there was always room for him at the home of his best friend Lomax Greene. His parents had grown up with Dominic and Irene, and though they had kind of drifted apart in later years, the boys were the best of friends because of school. They were inseparable on the weekends from the age of six, and they never fell out once. Lomax’s parents were happy to put a bed up for Iggy when he was a kid and when he was a teenager. They had a plate ready for him, and room in the car when they took trips. Dominic even reconnected with the family as the boys grew up, but Irene never managed to get over her grief, even with all help and hope of the man who never stopped loving her.
Ignis was moving to New York for college, but in the summer before that move, tragedy struck. Dominic died suddenly after suffering a stroke. Iggy contemplated staying in Arizona for Irene, but she didn’t want him, and didn’t even make it through the simple funeral held for the man who had stuck by her side for all those years of alcohol dependency. It was Lomax who pointed out how proud Dominic had been of him for getting into college, for making something of himself despite the rough times they had been through. Lomax, too, was going to New York, to a different school but the same city nevertheless. It made Iggy’s decision easier to make. The day he packed up his car was the last time he saw his mother, but he left his contact details in the house, and with Lomax’s family in case anyone ever needed him.
College was four years of finding himself and who he wanted to be. He started it with grief in his heart, but he turned into a strong man along the way. He ended up with the scar on his chin after a date went terribly wrong, but Ignis quickly realised that New York was supposed to be his home. He was studying History with English Literature, and after he graduated he landed a job as an Assistant Archivist at the Museum of Natural History. A few years later he was offered the job of full time Archivist when the older guy retired. It was the job Iggy dreamt of, one that made him happy, and it kept him in the city he felt like he belonged in. There’s still a lot out there he wants to experience, but right now Ignis can’t say he’s unhappy either.
