PERSONALITY:
Loretta is a bookworm through and through. She loves to read, both for learning and pleasure, and her personal collection is a small library of its own. This makes her a bit of a nerd, which is shown in her addiction to Harry Potter and history of any kind. She’s extremely smart and can reference everything from Shakespeare to the Constitution, but she’s kind and not condescending about it. She likes to enjoy nights out whenever she can and tries to have fun in whatever ways she can find, though it usually ends up with her nose buried in some book.
She puts family first at all times, and is very motherly, which in turn leads to her being responsible. She does have bad a habit of giving too much of herself, putting everyone else first and forgetting to take care of herself. Loretta can be hard to open up sometimes, but, once she does, she gets attached easily and hangs on to people with all her heart. She’s a little scared of love, but still believes in all the romances she reads about and considers herself a hardcore romantic in the best way possible.MOTHER: Lilybeth Brennan & 55.

HISTORY:
Loretta was the second daughter to Lilybeth and Daniel, and she completed their family in ways they never thought possible. She, along with her sister, had been miracle babies as Lilybeth didn’t think she could have children after a car crash in her youth caused severe internal damage. But the couple eventually found themselves with two beautiful girls and a charming house in the heart of Chaplin, Connecticut. They moved from Tennessee to the small town, and Daniel quickly found a job at the quaint library while Lilybeth stayed home to raise her girls.
Loretta, usually called Lottie by her family, spent most of her days at the library with her father. The place became a second home to her, and she was frequently found scouring the shelves for another favorite novel or curled up in a corner by one of the huge windows reading her afternoons away. From a young age, she loved to read and her father encouraged the habit as much as he could. He would slide titles from all different genres her way, exposing her to as much of the world as he could in their small town. She quickly fell for Shakespeare and Louisa May Alcott, and the small bookshelf in her room was overflowing by the time she reached high school.
While her older sister was off playing sports and joining the popular kids at school, Loretta always had her nose buried in a book. With their considerable age gap and Carolyn’s inability to sit still, the girls were never together for long. Loretta much preferred to stay home while her sister went out and, while they were there for each other for all the advice, boy drama, and bickering as usual, they were never particularly close. Loretta was her father’s pet since childhood, and their relationship flourished over literary discussions and shared days at the library. Like most young girls, her father was her hero and she remained a Daddy’s Girl for most of her life, though she did love her mother just as much and appreciated the kind, beautiful example Lilybeth set for her girls.
Loretta devoted herself to her studies throughout school. She loved to learn, absorbing as much knowledge as she could hold. It sent her to the top of her class in no time and she was jokingly deemed the “pretty nerd” in high school. Being Valedictorian of her class, she had a good choice of colleges to pick from. She knew, without a doubt, that she would be following in her father’s footsteps and getting her degree in Library Sciences to one day become a librarian. It was just a matter of choosing the right school for her.
With many campus tours and a lot of calculating how far schools were from home, Loretta ended up choosing NYU and received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from there. Carolyn had graduated from the university a few years before her and was still living in the city at that time, so it was an easy choice. They shared an apartment after Loretta’s freshman year and it helped bring the girls closer together. It took her a little while, but Loretta eventually found her groove in college and fell in with a good group of friends. She came out of her shell with a lot of help from Carolyn and finally got to have the party and social experiences she’d missed in high school.
Still acting as the mom of her friend group despite Carolyn’s best efforts to get her to “let loose,” Loretta worked hard for her degrees. She studied endlessly and could often be found buried between mounds of textbooks when finals rolled around. She took her studies seriously and made Dean’s List every semester she attended, graduating almost at the top of her class once again.
After college, she heavily contemplated moving home permanently. She loved the small-town she’d grown up in, but she also enjoyed the freedom New York presented her with. She and Carolyn had given up the lease to their apartment as Carolyn was moving in with her then-fiancée, Zachary, who she’d been dating since around the time Loretta came for school. The two were lovebirds in the making and she was happy her sister had found someone special. Zach was a firefighter and worked crazy shifts, but she welcomed him as a brother-in-law and thought he suited her sister well.
After helping them get settled in their new house just outside the city, she moved home for about a year and kept the intention of moving back once she figured out a future for herself. It was selfish, but she wanted to find the “right” library for her. She had gotten a few offers, but none of them clicked. Loretta wanted another home, somewhere she could see herself staying for a while and not just passing through, so she came and worked with her father until she found her dream job.
During this time, Carolyn got pregnant while still planning her wedding, a surprise to her parents yet not so much to Loretta who had shared a wall with the girl. Zach tried to push up the wedding, but the bride would hear none of it, so they kept their original date and soon the beautiful Rebecca was brought into the world. Loretta came back to New York for the birth with Carolyn begging her to stay for a few weeks to help with the baby as Zach returned to his crazy work hours. She set herself up in the guest room, peacefully playing nanny and reconnecting with her sister again.
The call came late at night, right as Carolyn was getting her daughter to sleep. Loretta answered the phone, a norm since she was basically a live-in maid now, and was mistaken for her sister by the Chief of Zach’s firehouse. He quietly told her everything about the fire, the faulty foundation of the house, the three kids that had been saved; Loretta could only stand there, her mouth hanging open as she slowly came to terms with what he was saying. Zach was dead. It was devastating to Carolyn, and it shook their entire family to the core. Loretta moved in full-time to the house, trying to balance raising a newborn and consoling her widowed sister. After the funeral, her parents tried to stay for as long as they could, but she shooed them out to try and help return the house to some form of normal.
That was a year ago and Carolyn was still not doing well. She found a job as a medical coder, staying as close as possible to home and to her daughter. Loretta remained in New York and continued to live with her sister, though she found her own job, as well, as a Children’s Librarian at the Manhattan Public Library. She often brings Rebecca to work with her and stills plays nanny most of the time. Loretta tries her hardest to help keep everyone’s spirits high, but it’s not as easy as it looks to keep her head up all the time.
