SECRETS: Bartholomew is actually a published author. He writes under a pseudonym because he doesn't want the attention. He puts some proceeds towards his niece's college fund, charities and making sure he has food in the fridge.
PERSONALITY: Bartholomew is kind of the classic gentleman. He holds doors open for people, he brings flowers and chocolates on dates. He's very sweet and caring, has been told on numerous occasions that he had been born in the wrong time. And Bartholomew can't help but agree to that. It might seem like he's a bit of a pushover because of his polite, old Victorian ways but that is hardly the case. He's quite the tough professor but also very fair. If he believes the lines being thrown his way, or thinks they're very well thought out and creative, he'll let them slide and allow an extension. He's not a total ass. He prides himself on being a bit old world like, with his posture, affection for bowties and sweater vests and of course, history. Bartholomew is definitely a lover, not a fighter. He's got a backbone, for sure, but he likes to hide it and he does so very well. As well, he's quite the romantic, putting time and effort into each date. There's no point in trying to impress someone with poorly thought out trips to restaurants with walks through parks, seats at the theatre and finishes on front door steps if there's no genuine thought put into it.MOTHER: Bethany Deacon & fifty six.

HISTORY: Bartholomew's parents met at a conference and found themselves connecting several times before Bethany agreed to a coffee date. Carlton tried to pull out all the stops on such short notice, using the concierge to map out as perfect a date as possible, a trait his only son developed as well. He must have impressed her because they kept in contact afterwards and when half of Carlton's office, including the man himself was sent off to Iowa to open a new office, he met up with Bethany again. This time for good. They were married about a year after the move and when Bethany and Carlton were twenty seven and twenty nine, respectively, they welcomed their first child, a little boy they named Bartholomew. It had been Bethany's grandfather's name and one that had moved down through the generations. Her brother hadn't named his son after the older Bart, so she decided to carry the name on and Carlton agreed. Four years later, they welcomed another child, this time a girl and life was complete for the family.
They made an adorable picture, loving the holidays and each other. There were sports games and dance classes and friends always around. It was only quiet when the kids were asleep but Bethany and Carlton wouldn't have asked for any less. They hadn't wanted a huge family but they had wanted a loud and welcoming one. And that was exactly what they'd gotten for themselves. Elementary school was fine, a couple of bullies thanks to his name but Bartholomew took it all in stride and tried very hard to not let it get to him. There were times of course, when it did and he spoke to his parents about it but doing anything more wouldn't have fixed anything and Bartholomew knew that. He switched school going into high school, the board allowing it thanks to the teasing and torment he'd suffered with the others all the previous years. He made sure all the records said his last name only and went only by that. Deacon was so much better than Bartholomew and he managed to get through the next four years without much torment. Sure, if someone found out about it, they tried to tease him but he was older, he'd grown up from getting upset because people thought his name was old fashioned.
He didn't see a problem with that at all. He was old fashioned. He liked vests, both buttoned and sweater, and he liked bowties, books and preferred tea to coffee, though he would be the first to admit he drank coffee by the gallon, especially around finals. He was quite the dork but he was also okay with that. His charm and charisma landed him with plenty of dates, especially once he was older and away at school. University was obviously different but not by much. He was still that old fashioned guy, just now it was trendy and cute and sweet and the Greek letters that were attached to his name definitely didn't hurt. He studied History and took a minor in English. Writing hadn't really been a thought for Bartholomew but he had an assignment one day that saw him finish a short story to hand it in. Afterwards he hadn't thought much of it until it was returned to him with a note from his professor. The note inspired Bartholomew to expand his work and send it to publishers. He hadn't thought much of it, he knew that it took sending it in hundreds of times to even hear back from a publishing house. So when the third letter came back with positive reviews, he'd been totally shocked.
He agreed to continue on the book, creating a series but under a false name. He was almost finished school completely and was looking for a teaching job that would keep his interest. Teaching elementary kids or high school wasn't what he wanted. He wanted something with a little more meat. He was one of three other teachers who made it to second interviews and somehow, though he honestly doesn't know how, he managed to win over the board who had hired him. Teaching college aged kids when he was basically the same age as them was a bit difficult but he thrived under the pressure. He liked how things had turned out for him. He only wished that his sister had been granted the same fate but at the same time, he was also glad she'd gotten herself into the situation she had because he wouldn't have his adorable four year niece. Bartholomew had not realised idiots like Piper's father still existed outside of high school. He had seen one girl back in high school get dumped when her boyfriend found out she was pregnant but he'd never seen it outside of high school. Most people, thought they might not have wanted the child, at least tried to be part of the baby's life. Not the foolish moron who knocked up his sweet baby sister. Four years later, Piper has her uncle wrapped around her finger and he is not the least bit sorry about that.
