PERSONALITY: Camden is a very jumpy individual. Her medication makes her seem sleepy and in a daze some of the time, but she’d rather have that than be in a permanent depressive slump; of which she does still have spells. Camden is quirky and her moments that might seem baffling to others are typically a coping strategy for her anxiety and a way to battle the panic building up within. She’s feminine, but has a lot of self-doubt about the things that could make her happy. She’s nervous around large crowds and prefers animals to people. Camden is smart, but often hides it or doesn’t believe it. She can be emotional often, and it doesn’t take a great deal to break her. Camden is happiest in her own company, even though it’s not always healthiest for her. Anger manifests as tears for her, because she doesn’t have the confidence for a confrontation. Feelings of romance leave her flustered. She’s meek, and not at all bold enough to make a move if she likes someone. She fears being alone forever and being forgotten. Being loved is her dream, but she has no way of putting that into motion herself, which makes her fearful of it all so much more. She worries that no one will ever come along to handle her troubled self.MOTHER: Jordan Rose Hatton, 58.

HISTORY: Marvin knew Jordan – and loved her – when he enlisted with the US Army. He wrote to her during her service, but they never married until he was honourably discharged after an injury left him with chronic back pain and shrapnel scars. They had five sons, and then Jordan was expecting again. They were preparing for another little boy, but Camden was a little girl. Marvin never explained why he was so put off by this, but he was determined they give their daughter the name they had picked out for their son, and that she was raised just like their boys. There was no mollycoddling their little girl, and after Camden was born, Jordan seemed to fall into denial about the post-partum depression. If anyone asked her about her health she just said she was tired, which people believed easily since she was raising six young children and keeping house while her husband worked long hours as a driver.
Camden did not want to be like her brothers. She wanted to be girly and have dresses and dolls. She hated sports and her dad made her cry more than he ever made her laugh. However, when the tears fell she was only told off for being weak and a cry baby. Her brothers, particularly Alex, looked out for her though, even when her parents didn’t. Jordan mostly had little interest in her children, going through the motions of raising them until they were adults and then she seemed to come back into focus with them, but by then the damage was done for Camden. Marvin’s harsh words and mean approach to his daughter left her broken and depressed by her teenage years.
Camden was riddled with anxiety by the time she started high school, and it manifested into depression by her junior year. She didn’t fit in with anyone thanks to how her classmates perceived her anxiety attacks and random outbursts of thoughts. She dressed like a tomboy (thanks to her parents) but wanted to enjoy make-up and fashion. It was a mess of a personality clash, and she couldn’t understand why her parents were so against letting her be who she wanted to be, but it happened and continued to happen. When Camden broke down at her high school graduation it was her brother Tai who took her to see a doctor. The official diagnosis was made and she spent a few weeks in the comfort of her brother’s New York City apartment so she could be away from her toxic parents. Her dad was not at all supportive of Camden’s mental health problems, and couldn’t understand why she wasn’t going to college and couldn’t just pull herself together.
Over time Camden got some semblance of control over her life, but she also understood that she would be battling with her mental health for the rest of her life. It already meant she struggled to hold down a job or went time without a job at all and had to rely on her brothers. She tried to stay away from her parents completely because trips home never helped and only put her in a bad place where she slept for days or cried for a long time. Eventually, she took up a job as a dog walker, which is something she loves and a job that forces her to leave her apartment every day. She’s doing good right now, but her brothers are trying to encourage her to do more with her life, see if she can take that next step. They know she’s clever, and they know she’s more than she believes, but they don’t want to push her like their father did, or ignore her like their mother did.
