SECRETS: Krystian tells everyone he dreamt of learning languages so he could help people and that it was just a fun hobby. In truth his home life was unbearable and he wanted to run away to anywhere else and he hoped learning all those new languages might help him find somewhere to belong.
PERSONALITY: He’s often a quiet guy when he’s not being paid to talk. Krystian speaks six languages and he’s working on a seventh, but he prefers often to just listen. He sees himself as an outcast because that’s sort of how he was brought up. A little bit of a drifter, Krystian might live and work in New York but he doesn’t feel like he belongs there and he packs up and travels a lot when time permits in order to find that sense of acceptance (though he often ends up in the middle of nowhere enjoying his own company). He is definitely something of a loner and breaking down those walls to make a long lasting friendship with him can be a difficult notion. He’s clean, despite his sometimes scruffy appearance, and it’s typically the first thing Krystian will judge a person for. Still, his best trait is likely his creativity, which he often hides through disinterest and modesty. He doesn’t show his feelings well, which is why he walks away from all confrontation – he doesn’t have the effort to put in. He’s had brief relationships in the past, but his inability to talk about his emotions usually end them before they can go too far. It’s for that reason Krystian feels like he has no choice but to settle for random hook ups – they’re over before people can see he’s something of a closed shell.MOTHER: Alicja Dorata Niemczyk, 55.

HISTORY: When the blonde haired, blue eyed Krystian was born into the Niemczyk family, eyebrows were raised. None of his parents or siblings shared those features, and whispers began about whether Alicja had cheated on Ryszard with someone else. It was no secret that their marriage had been one of convenience. They were both from wealthy families who wanted to strengthen the ties they already had. The relationship was civil, but not loving, and it became purely for show after Krystian was born. Ryszard struggled to see the boy as his, despite a photograph Alicja produced showing that her grandfather was fair-haired with light eyes, and that their son was almost the spitting image of the man in the cracked, aged photograph she had found in an old family album. No, it was easier to treat Krystian as an outcast who brought shame and horror to the family name.
Being raised as the black sheep of the family was tough. Even his older brothers treated him as though he was different and inferior to them. Gifts were always less expensive, and praise never came his way. Rumours that he was someone else’s son never quite went away regardless of Alicja’s protests, and even Krystian asked the question once or twice until he saw the photograph of his maternal grandfather himself. Then he understood. Genetics was not that complicated, but people preferred gossip over logic, it seemed. Forced to be on his own more often than he cared to think about, Krystian turned to languages. He had to learn English through his school, but he opted to study more, not just for his education, but also as a hobby. It gave him something to do when he was alone in his bedroom. By the time he was eighteen, he was fluent in English, German, Russian and French. He added Swedish and Romanian to that list when he was in university, where he studied Linguistics.
Throughout his life, Krystian never made any long lasting friendships. He was painted as an outcast by everyone, and branded bad by people who hadn’t even met him. The stigma that followed him around just because he looked different from the rest of his family was ridiculous, but being from an upper class circle, privately educated, it made a great difference. Krystian had grown up in a world where reputation was everything, and there was no way to salvage something once it was so tarnished. It was why he made the choice to leave, and to head for America once he was finished with university.
He found himself in New York, where he eventually gained employment with the NYPD as a translator, after working a few various low wage jobs, and trying his hand at teaching language himself. Being a translator was a good fit. He was kept surprisingly busy with the work, but he could be called in at any time of the day or night. He also had himself a caravan trailer which meant he could just go on the road and drive for days, sleeping whenever he needed to and ending up literally in the middle of nowhere, camping out under the stars. New York provided him with opportunity, but at the same time he needed to get away from the city every now and then because the bright lights and the constant noise was just too much for him. He doesn’t think he’s changed much, and he hasn’t been back to Poland for three years, but Krystian is so walled in with himself and his ways that it can’t be good for him, and it’s really no way to spend the rest of his life.
