PLAY-BY: Chris Wood!LIKES: travelling, backpacks, the jungle, dead languages, rum, exploration, not shaving, martial arts, hammocks, seafood, hot weather, secretly helping people, making a new discovery, expensive chocolate, making his own cup of coffee, hip flasks, lavender, the colour green, the sounds of nature, cherry coke, old time explorers, honest people, churches, weddings.
DISLIKES: the museum, his brother, family events, people who love attention, talking about himself, the city, socialising, formal events, wearing a tie, beef, Starbucks, headaches, being in one place for too long, claustrophobia, Christmas, unnecessary extravagance, vacations, silence, pushing people away (but he does it), street harassment, driving.
FEARS: Claustrophobia, wax statues, driving.
SECRETS: All the work his brother is ‘famous’ for is actually Callen’s. Camden took claim of it when he was in hospital recovering from the accident that killed Natalie, and since then there’s been tension between the brothers. Callen will always be in that shadow now, no matter what, and it eats away at him.
PERSONALITY: At a glance, Callen appears bitter, and hard edged. These are a result of how the last few years, and how life in the city has made him. There’s a lot more to this complicated, knotted man. He’s intelligent, maddeningly so, but he’s so much of a loner now that very few people know that about him. He’s untrusting of others after the betrayal by his own brother, so it’s nearly impossible to break through his walls. Callan is tough and athletic, skilled in four types of martial arts just because it’s something to keep him occupied when he’s not travelling. An adventurer at heart, city life really isn’t for him, and sitting still is not his forte. He’s something of a wildcard these days, and not the type who goes where he’s expected to go, for a whole multitude of reasons. Mostly he doesn’t like being there, but Callen is also a troubled man who instead of facing his problems decided to hide in his work. He’s angry a lot of the time, stuck in the problems of his past, but he’s good enough a person not to take it out on a complete stranger. On the very, very rare moments when he might slip up, he is apologetic, but he’s also gone a second later and never seen in that spot again. He knows how to be a ghost when he wants to be. There’s a good side to him, but as surprising and as kind as it is, he ensures no one actually sees it. He keeps it secret, and acts only when he knows it can never be proven to be his own hand making miracles happen. Grieving for the love he lost, Callen isn’t ready for steady and forever. He tells himself he never will be. He’s had women in other places, names he doesn’t know, who don’t know him. He’s not proud of it, but it’s just something that happens. He’s rough and enigmatic, and they like that, so for a few hours he plays like he can forget the demons. He can’t, not truly, so he’s always gone before they can wake up. He doesn’t want to face up to the idea that there might be another forever out there for him.MOTHER: Maureen Liza Sedgwick, deceased.

SIBLINGS: Camden Ford Sedgwick, 31.
OTHERS: Natalie Celene Highmore, deceased, ex-girlfriend.

HISTORY: Maureen and Damian met in college, but they only started dating a few years after. Damian held down a job at a financial law firm, and Maureen was a real estate advisor. They married a little further down the line and soon after had two sons; Camden and Callen. Their relationship was always full of strife. One always seemed to want what the other had. It grew complicated and competitive from an early age between them. Their parents spent a lot of time separating their fights and sorting their problems out.
Both boys had a love for history. They revelled in it. Callen was always better than his older brother though. It annoyed Camden who wanted to be the best. He was the older of the two and thus it was his right to always been better than Callen. Callen had a less competitive streak, but was a harder worker. He kept to himself a lot more, simply because he liked to avoid things like high school drama and petty squabbles. He had enough with his brother and didn’t need to stoke the fire with anything more.
Their mother died when Callen was nineteen. She had a sudden heart attack that no one saw coming given that she was young and in good health. It shook the family up for sure. Damian stopped monitoring his sons, and Callen became more determined than ever to make something of himself that Maureen could have been proud of. He was at college in New York studying anthropology and linguistics, while Camden was an archaeology graduate looking for work.
In college, Callen met Natalie. She was an English Lit major who ran away with his heart. Callen was absolutely crazy about her. There might have been girls before her, but he was growing more and more certain that there would be none after her. She was everything he ever wanted and more. They were happy together, and after graduation spoke about getting an apartment together, which they did. It was rented and small, and probably terrible, but it was theirs so they loved it, and each other. It was another thing Callen had that Camden didn’t. He would make awkward comments at family gatherings or when he came to visit. Camden had a job with the Museum in the city after a few years interning and going on short lived digs that got him nowhere. It was like he tried to ruin what Callen and Natalie had, but they were made of stronger stuff.
Callen ended up travelling a lot after graduation. He accompanied digs and research groups to add his knowledge on the culture and the people of their finds. Plus, he was an expert on extinct languages, so a lot of what they found needed translating by someone who could read it. His knowledge was invaluable, and he hoped to write some papers throughout his twenties to make a name for himself so that he might go on bigger and better adventures as he got older. That was all taken from him though one winter in the city. Home from a trip to Peru, he was driving Natalie back from her parent’s home in New Jersey when a truck skidded in front of them. He had to swerve to avoid a crash, but ended up on the same black ice and lost control. His car was a write off and Callen was in and out of consciousness for a few weeks simply because of how much pain medication the hospital had him on. He’d broken three ribs, bruised a hell of a lot of himself, and broken his jaw. Natalie, despite her fighting, had died three days after admission, bleeding on the brain just too much for the doctors to treat. As if that wasn’t enough, Callen had to find out that Camden had stolen his journals and submitted what he had already written to be published, but under his own name. When Callen confronted his older brother he claimed that he did it so that nothing was wasted should the worst happen; that someone ought to have the credit.
Callen left after he recovered. He buried Natalie, mourned with her family, but he was gone. Camden went to his celebration at the museum having to explain a black eye, and Callen stopped keeping journals about his discoveries. He cut off his support for the museum, and his support on dig sites and research trips became limited. People saw the sudden change, questioned if it was a physical result of the accident, or grief, but no one seemed to connect the dots that when Camden had a sudden flourish of academic success, Callen suddenly stopped seeming like he gave a damn about his field. He would be asked if he was ‘that C. Sedgwick’ and through gritted teeth he’d be forced to correct them. He knew he was, but damn his brother for stealing his work, his knowledge, because Camden wasn’t capable of doing it himself.
So now that’s it. Callen is a untrusting shell of his former self. All that intellect and kindness is hidden behind layers of grief, bitterness, and reckless behaviour. He’s not happy, and never will be while he continues on this path. He stays in the city long enough to pick up another job, and then he’s off. He’d rather be anywhere but New York.
