FEARS: Going back to prison, his sister being hurt, never being a father.
SECRETS: People think Faolan is a thug who severely assaulted an NYPD officer for no legitimate reason, but in truth, Faolan beat the living crap out of Dennis because he hit his sister. To protect his sister, Faolan took his sentence and just held his head high knowing that Dennis would at least have to spend the rest of his life with the scars he gave him.
PERSONALITY: Faolan is a gruff guy. He’s quiet, but only because he’s not one for talking about himself, or showing too many of his cards. Protective, he’s not afraid to take a bullet for the people he loves, or even go to extreme lengths to keep them safe from harm. He’s proven it before and he’ll do it again if he has to. Faolan likes to keep healthy and active, mostly because he thinks he’ll go crazy if he sits still for too long. He’s the type of guy who is respectful of others, so long as they show him the same kind of common courtesy in return. Many people may be surprised to hear that he’s quite the family man, with a caring side, but Faolan probably puts his family above everything else in the world. He won’t ever claim to be perfect, and he’s the first to admit to his flaws. He understands that he has a wild temper, but he can actually keep a handle on himself, which is why he boxes. It’s a healthy outlet for his anger. His frustrations are only ever for those who have been wronged by others, but Faolan always feels like he should fix them, or make them right in some way. He’s not much of a romantic, but at the same time he’s not a man who fancies bringing a girl home for a night and never seeing her again either. Faolan has his problems, and he’s easily jealous, possibly borderline possessive when he’s dating someone, but only through a worry of losing her to someone better. He knows he’s not the best man out there, but whenever he’s with a woman, he makes sure it’s all about her, even if it might not be a conventional romance, or even apparent that he’s passionate and smitten.MOTHER: Rosalyn Lily Calghain, 60.

HISTORY: Rothwell and Rosalyn were happily married, for a spell. They met at a bar, a long time ago it felt like, but took their time before they said their vows at city hall and had a rowdy party at one of the Irish pubs in the city to celebrate. Rothwell worked on the docks, and Rosalyn was a PA for a businessman who liked to get a little handsy from time to time. Ros could handle herself though, and Rothwell wasn’t afraid to threaten to rough the guy up if he ever crossed a line. They had a son, a few years after they married, Faolan, and then when he was five, they had a daughter, Saoirse. They were happy for a little while. A nice family unit. Faolan was like his father from the moment he was born. Everyone spoke about how he was the spitting image of Rothwell as a baby, then as a child and even all grown up he was just like the man from who he also inherited his hot temper and love of boxing.
When Faolan was nine, his parents began to fight, and before his tenth birthday they had separated. Rosalyn and Rothwell never divorced, and there were times throughout the future years when they came together again for a night of passion, or a few weeks of reminiscing over the good times. There was always some love left between them, but it wasn’t enough to make up for the fighting. They were both stubborn fools, and knew that they both held responsibilities for what had happened to ruin their marriage. During all this, Faolan became very protective of his little sister. He took Saoirse away to the park when the fighting began, he let her hide under his bed and play on his Gameboy if it was too late at night. There wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do to help her hide from the fighting. Their parents loved them, they both knew this, but when Saoirse was only so little, it was scary for her to her them screaming at each other.
Faolan grew into a tall, strong man. His life was mostly uneventful, with a few fights throughout his teenage years shaping him into a tough boy. He took up boxing at a local gym thanks to his dad’s insistence, but there wasn’t much he wanted out of life. He had a keen interest in bikes, rode a secondhand one of a cousin who was inside for robbery, but the apprenticeship he landed out of high school was with an unreliable guy who rarely opened the garage when he ought to. It was a messy situation to say the least, and Faolan had to often learn for himself, figuring out things with the help of manuals, people he knew and tinkering about until the problem seemed to be fixed. It was hardly idea. He switched for a better place at the first opportunity.
When he was twenty-seven, he got a call in the dead of night from Saoirse. She was bloody, beaten and terrified. A man she had just started to date had lashed out at her and the result was broken ribs and a face that was black and blue. Faolan took her to the hospital and managed to get a name out of her. Before the sun came up he had found Dennis Ryker and made certain that he would be in a hospital bed, too. The only thing he didn’t know was that Dennis was an NYPD officer. The trouble that stemmed from there once Dennis filed a report saw Faolan charged with Assault in the Second Degree, and ultimately, despite everything, he ended up being sentenced to five years in jail. Saoirse was too scared to speak up, suffering from nightmares and awful anxiety after the attack, and Faolan wasn’t going to force her to speak in a court or to police just in case it might cut his sentence or get him off completely. He’d rather protect his sister the shame she felt for not being strong enough in her own eyes, and just take what was given to him. He was young, he could handle five years, and he didn’t care if the world painted him some brutal, Irish born thug.
He served his time keeping his head high and his nose out of trouble. They let him work on his skills as a mechanic there, earning some more qualifications on an education scheme. He avoided the gang scene, but did enough to make sure people didn’t fuck around with him. He wasn’t a pushover, but he also wasn’t going to have time added onto his sentence because someone wanted to bait him.
When Faolan got out, it took time for him to readjust. Five years was a long time to be inside. Saoirse took him in, as they had remained close, but he didn’t want to rely on her for too long. He got a job fixing up bikes again, with a guy who didn’t mind that his past was a rough one; he only care that Faolan was honest and worked hard. After that he found a place of his own and was happy to see his sister with a man who was the opposite of Dennis Ryker. Saoirse was with someone now who treated her right, and that was when Faolan knew he could look at his own future and what life held for him now he was a free man. The reputation of brutal thug still hangs over him though.
