DISLIKES: Warm beer, cats, nightmares, his guilty conscience, reality television, crime shows, skipping lunch, egg rolls, girls with tons of makeup, ignorance, failing at something, leather couches, under stuffed chairs, tea, kiwis, getting sunburned.
FEARS: His past catching up with him, getting hit by a car, extreme heights (He has to take medication to even get on a plane!)
SECRETS: Artie's deepest, darkest secret is that he paid off a woman who was carrying his child. He had, at the time, cared more about his reputation than anything else and having a baby with a woman he wasn't married to was as high as crime as any in his social circles. He doesn't regret much from his twenty seven years, but he does regret how childish he'd gone about that.
PERSONALITY:
Artie is a surprisingly caring man though he knows he can sometimes come across as scary. A case of misprescribed medication had him seeing some nerve damage in his jaw, mostly making the side of his face droop oddly. It's hardly noticeable of course, unless he's trying to smile. He doesn't let the oddity of his features hinder his abilities to try to make the world a better place. His face as nothing to do with the plans and the brains this smart man. He's made a lot of stupid and reckless decisions in his lifetime but he is trying to make p for them. Though it's going to be a hell of a lot harder than he thinks it will. He's got a guilty conscience bigger than Texas and he knows it, though he's spent quite a bit of time trying to put it behind him. He'd been young and scared and more concerned about his own life than he'd ever put any thought into the girl he'd gotten pregnant. After that he decided he would not be using his fortune frivolously or as childishly as he had. If he could go back and do it all again, he would but as time travel hasn't yet been invented, he must live with his mistakes. Artie has turned his crazy frat boy life around though and has made a name for himself as a sweet man who cares quite a bit about the children of New York. He can become a little bitter when he's fallen down a depressed path but he's not a depressed man. In fact, he's quite the happy man, he just wishes he would have done things differently. For those moods, he generally hides away and puts his atheletic skills, though few they are, to good use in the gym or with a pick up game of something in the park. He tries to be romantic but he's well aware he doesn't always hit his mark there. Still, he tries and that as he can see it, is better than not ever trying at all.MOTHER: Patience Van Hope & 53.

HISTORY: The Van Hopes can be traced back through American history for generations and even further back before they'd made the crossing. New York and thereabouts was where they'd settled and remained for all those generations and where Patience and Arthur the third met and were told they would be married some day. Theirs was a business transaction that eventually grew to appreciation, friendship and eventually even love, though it took quite a long time to get to that point. They'd known since they were quite young though, that they would be married so they were able to at least grow up together, get to know each other and figure out a way to cohabit the same space. Both their children were brought into the world before Patience was thirty, with the young couple settled enough in their own rights that a family wouldn't complicate things. Convenience was key. So Arty and his brother Marcus had nannies. Not one but three, constantly on rotation. Their parents may have been distant but they knew children needed constant care. Magda saw them through the days, Georgette stayed through the night and Wendy kept them busy over the weekends. The media of course, saw Patience as a doting mother and housewife with her fingers in all sorts of charitable pies but she rarely actually saw her children. As far as Arty could figure out when she was older, she wouldn't have been able to pick him out of a lineup if she ever needed to.
Arty was academically gifted to everyone who didn't see how hard he studied for those grades, he was an exceptional tennis player but no one saw how many hours he spent practicing. His whole life he was groomed to be the perfect blue blood; perfect royalty despite not having a single drop of royal blood in their lines recently. There had been at some point or another some time long before history became an interesting subject of course, but that was so diluted it wouldn't have mattered either way. And Arty never really brought it up to anyone because, really, why bother. His life seemed to take a turn for the better when he went off to university, joining his father's fraternity. He was a legacy and he knew if he couldn't make his father proud, he would at least show him he was a Van Hope with the frat. The boys of Beta Theta Pi made Art feel like he could have been anyone at all and not Arthur Cornelius Van Hope the fourth. It was at one of their parties that he met Wyatt Daisy St Patrick. She looked like she wanted to be anywhere else and he was intrigued. As they do one thing led to another over time and Arty was quite smitten but he was also in his senior year and though he liked Wyatt, he wasn't sure if he was ready for any sort of serious relationship. And then she told him she was pregnant. The one speck on Art's impeccable nature, is and will probably always be his guilty conscience. He shouldn't have done what he had but he wasn't thinking about right and wrong at the time. He'd been thinking about his future, his life, his career. He would have been thrown out of the family, not that his family knew anything about him, and left on the streets like any other regular person. And as much as he wanted to pretend like he would have been able to handle it, he wouldn't have been qualified for a job at Abercombie, nevermind anything else! He'd never held a real job, he'd never done anything worthy of mention. But he did have money. More money than he could spend in three lifetimes. So he offered it, an exorbitant amount of money and told her to go and do what she wanted. He couldn't have any part of this. It was selfish and it was cruel but right then, he was a scared little boy and he wanted his problems to go away.
They did and he was unbelievably relieved and he worked hard to put it all behind him. His mother, who finally seemed to realise he was indeed a real person, introduced him to a friend's daughter, thinking they would make cute babies and carry on the family name. She wasn't overly concerned about either they were a good match or not, whether they could even find common ground. She wanted to carry on the family name and the best way to do that, basically marry her son off! He and Briar did however click well, found that common ground he'd been worried about. He invited her to dinner, charitable events that were important to him and she invited him to some as well. They vacationed together and eventually Art asked her to move into his Gramercy Park townhouse, an investment he'd purchased when it came available shortly after his graduation. He didn't care about his money, most of it went to his charitable works but his parents were footing the bill and he did like spending their money. He genuinely believed because they were so absent from his childhood, they could afford to spend the money to buy his affections. As well as picking up a house, Art also started up his own charitable foundation, helping those kids in the care system get things they need. He'd had absent parents and he knew how difficult it could be to be without that affection. And though he would never know how they were really feeling, he thought, if he could provide the funds to allow them to go to camp in the summer or take extra lessons outside of school, then he would do it. He wants to leave his mark and he's well on his way to doing just that.
