SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: A few from growing up, but nothing major.
TATTOOS: He has two full sleeves, a chest piece, a piece that runs the length of his left side across his ribs, a bird over his right hip which comes from a smaller piece on his right side. On his left shin there’s a lighthouse, and a compass design on his thigh of the same leg. His left foot and heel have designs on them, too, and his fingers have symbols, too.

DISLIKES: Clingy women, uncomfortable silences, being too lazy, people who are on their phone in company/at the dinner table, being grumpy, pessimism, being put on hold, scripted workers, someone knocking when he’s in the shower, sitting on his sunglasses, beef teriyaki, long queues, spoilt rich kids (though he could technically be one), swans.

SECRETS: He doesn’t mention his parents because he’s making it on his own without them. He’s still close to them, but he doesn’t want there to be a whole ‘thing’ about it..
PERSONALITY: Duncan is a manly kind of man, which may not explain much, but it’s how he’s often described with his appearance and hobbies. Hardworking, mildly stubborn and extremely determined, Duncan knows what he wants in his life and will strive to have it all. He’s a bit rough around the edges, but he likes being that way. He can accept that he’s flawed and makes mistakes, which means he’s not afraid to apologise if he feels like he’s in the wrong. He’s a fair kind of guy who, at times, can be brutally honest; he’d rather hurt someone with honesty and let them get over any illusions they might have than hurt them later after they feel they’ve been strung along in one way or another. There are moments when he can seem like a right grumpasaurus, but he tries not to be since he wants to enjoy life, the little things and the beauty of the world. He’s a musical guy, talented in his own right and a lover of it, too. Duncan can, at times, be rather sentimental and he has boxes of pictures and things he’s collected from the places he’s been; he believes in memories above most things. Impatient, he’ll claim it’s a trait he has because he’s busy so much, but he still has time for his friends. He’s a good friend to have; level-headed and always with a solid bit of advice for anyone who has a problem or six. He’s also quite intimidating when he wants to be, but most of the time he just uses this to stop fights, or get what he wants out of a bad situation. He’s not got a temper himself, but he can handle himself in a fight and will if he has to. Duncan doesn’t have much time for romance, but his taste can be rather particular. He doesn’t like wasting time on a relationship that will go nowhere, and he’d rather dedicate his time to someone who complements him. When he has that though, he’s very affectionate and loving.MOTHER: Chelsea Amelia Metalia, (Copper) 59
FATHER: Kieron Luke Metalia, 61.
SIBLINGS: Rosie Ann Metalia, 24.
OTHERS: N/A.
PETS: Harry, a pug of two
HOMETOWN: Hollywood Hills, California.
HISTORY: Chelsea had made it big in Hollywood before she was introduced to Kieron at a charity function where she was hosting an auction. Kieron was a screenwriter who had written two TV shows in his time at that point. One had been short lived and the second was just taking off. They were an instant match, and their relationship was kept out of the headlines as much as they could avoid the tabloid press and nosy journalists. The only pieces that they announced themselves were an engagement after two years of dating, the wedding a year later, and then Chelsea’s pregnancies. They found that breaking the news themselves stopped the press from snooping so much.
They kept Duncan and Rosie away from the glitz and glamour as much as they could, but growing up in Hollywood Hills made that a bit tricky. In the end they made it so that the children didn’t go to the parties and they weren’t flaunted before the camera like some Hollywood kids were. They got to grow up in peace and enjoy their childhood without worrying about making mistakes or doing something silly that might end up in a magazine or newspaper, words twisted to paint some untrue image of the happy little family. Duncan liked the life they lived. The ethics of hard work were instilled into him by his dad and his mom, and he wasn’t to take anything for granted, but he got to enjoy a life so many people didn’t even dare to dream about.
School was relatively straightforward for him. They tried to keep his parentage as quiet as possible so he could have a normal experience while he mother was pinned up in lockers and fawned over by his classmates. It was too weird and Duncan could never partake in conversations about celebrities and who he thought was hot. So many of them were considered family to him, or at least came over a few times a year for parties or dinners put on by his parents. He kept his head down and just worked on through it, blocking out all that was said because he knew that he couldn’t do anything about it. If he lashed out then people would know he was and his parents would be disappointed. Duncan graduated with the grades he wanted to go to the University of Phoenix where he studied journalism. It was another four years that went by fairly quickly and were filled with plenty of trips and parties and mistakes that he can now laugh about.
Once he graduated, Duncan freelanced for a while, writing about music, which was his passion and had been since he was a young teenager. He got to travel a bit for the work, and he saw his work in different kinds of papers and magazines, as well as online. After that he moved to New York when a job offer came up to work with a magazine. They had taken pieces from him in the past, but were ready to take on now and wanted him as part of the Entertainment team. It started off great, but when a new editor came in and changes were made, Duncan saw the magazine turn into another gossip rag like any other out there. They wanted the trends, the fads, the in and now, rather than what was out there and genuinely good about the city. After his piece on a truly amazing band was switched out for a piece about Justin Bieber, he had enough. He quit.
He looked around for another place, but he couldn’t find one. He liked New York, and didn’t want to leave it. It was a trip back to Hollywood Hills for his mom’s birthday that saw his sister suggest starting up a magazine of his own. Rosie was always full of crazy ideas, but this one stuck with Duncan after he got back to the city. He asked his dad for a small investment to get him started, and found a good space above an old bar that no one had been interested in since the last place closed down (it was apparently a questionable operation). He could picture it done up in his style with some desks, a hangout space, and a small office constructed for himself and anyone who needed the privacy for calls or anything. Duncan knew a few people who might help him out with a new magazine, and he hunted them down, explaining what he wanted to do. There would be an online blog that they update regularly – a few times a week, with a hard copy of the magazine done monthly and thick and full of all kinds of 'real' stuff. So, what he wants is a good chunk on music - preferably up and coming acts, album reviews. A food section which does recipes and goes into a good look at places to try out in New York, with the 'gang' of them trying it for themselves and giving honest feedback. He'd love to have a bit that's on the locals, so like the small businesses, the buskers, the one doorman who's worked at the same hotel for thirty years. Very much about living life, essentially. Places to go, things to try, with all involved being more than just behind the scenes, but popping up to share their experiences and opinions themselves. He wanted it all to be about loving life and loving the city.
Right now it’s still the thing he’s putting all of his effort into. With connections, the blog launching before the magazine, social media channels and perhaps sheer luck, the first issue sold well, for a first issue. He’s working on building up the team, and pushing for the second issue now, while they all still try to
