PERSONALITY: Kit is a warm young man who is usually remembered by those he meets for having a big heart and taking the time out of his day for others. Old fashioned, he values tradition and can never be accused of being rude, unless it’s a terrible day or something entirely called for. He’s chivalrous and charming to the point that sometimes people don’t know if it’s genuine or if he’s after something. He’s strong-willed and stubborn which makes it difficult for him to get over past grudges or let go of things that have happened in the past. Kit is also very athletic but it’s a personal goal these days since he blew out his shoulder when he was a high school senior and that put an end to most of his competitive ambitions – he still enjoys friendly games of football or baseball with friends on the weekends or holidays. He’s protective by nature, but always the kind who will defend anyone, be them friend or stranger. He probably cares too much about his fellow living creatures, but Kit can’t see that as a bad thing, even when his help goes unrewarded or people snap at him for trying to do something good. He’s a dedicated man, who longs to be a better family man than his own father. He’s romantic and very giving to the point where it’s easy for a woman to try to take advantage of his giving nature, but Kit isn’t so gullible to let it become a trend. He likes to surprise women, and be a gentleman, but he’s not going to let someone use him as a doormat. He has the top layer of a sweetheart, but beneath that he’s tough and resilient.MOTHER: Theresa Alison Way, 54.
FATHER: Lucas Scott Way, 59.
SIBLINGS: Annie Harriet Way, 27.
OTHERS: Loretta Rue Way – paternal grandmother, 82.
PETS: Luna, four month old Siberian kitten!
HOMETOWN: Carthage, Mississippi.
HISTORY: Lucas was a man’s man who turned many heads in his youth. Theresa was absolutely crazy about him. He stuck with her rather than anyone else because her dad got him a job that would see him set for life. It was only after that when he actually started to fall for her. They married and had two children. A daughter, and then a son. Kit was the apple of his father’s eye. When Kit was born Lucas planned everything out like he could control fate’s design. He had this whole perfect world built up for Kit from the moment he was born right up to college. He probably would have gone further but Theresa always told him to calm down and see what life brought along.
Kit himself wanted to impress his dad, but he knew he always fell short. There was a vein in Lucas’ throat that popped out whenever he was annoyed and Kit saw it a lot. He was a popular enough kid, athletic like Lucas wanted him to be, but there were little things, so many little things. Kit got a lot of sinus infections when he was a boy and it was one of those thing doctors never really understood. It was just his way. If Kit got a cold, he got a sinus infection at the end of it. He also suffered from frequent nosebleeds. These things apparently made him a sickly child despite three paediatricians giving Kit a clean bill of health. Kit would hide bloody tissues knowing his dad hated them, and he would say he wasn’t sick when his head felt like it was about to explode.
He was a smart kid. His mother and grandmother pushed him to study and not put as much thought into sports like his dad encouraged him to do. As Loretta Way always said; “I could blow out your kneecap with my .45. Then what would you do? Flip burgers until you looked like your father?” She was from Italy and had a blunt way with words, but Kit adored her more than anyone else in the world. If he had problems he went to his grandmother. She always seemed to know what to say and she definitely helped him put his mind at ease about his own father. If Lucas was ever acting too high and mighty, Loretta could knock him down to size with one sharp quip and no one would hear a peep out of him for the rest of the week. Kit loved the crazy old lady who was a widow who claimed to be in mourning whenever anyone questioned her attitude or manners – her husband had died before Kit was born, but that didn’t matter.
His dad seemed to enjoy Kit’s popularity more than anything else. He’d throw parties for the high school kids, barbecues for the football team and the like. When Kit started dating one of the cheerleaders Lucas acted like his son had just won a prestigious award. It all came crashing down though when a bad tackle blew out Kit’s shoulder during his senior year. Minor surgery was required to repair damage to the rotary cuff, but he wouldn’t be playing football again; at least not professionally. Lucas was beyond angry. All the plans he had for Kit were gone. There wouldn’t be a scout, or a football scholarship, and once his time with the team was done, the cheerleader lost all interest in Kit. The funny thing was that Kit didn’t care. He played football because it was fun, but it wasn’t his life. He never wanted it to be. During his brief time in the hospital he had kind of been pulled in by the staff there and he went back during his physiotherapy to ask questions of one of the male nurses he had met briefly. He wanted to know the requirements for college. It was all stuff he had thanks to his mom and grandma forcing him to put classes before sports.
It wasn’t a choice that went down overly well in the Way household though. His mom was happy, and his sister laughed but with affection. His dad, however, was furious and made all kinds of horrible and judgemental assumptions. His son was not going to be a nurse. Kit was as stubborn as his proud grandmother though, and he didn’t let Lucas sway him. When he threatened not to pay the tuition, Kit got a job and then another when school was out. He was going to sell his car to make the difference but Loretta wrote the cheque and said her son didn’t get to be an asshole and win. Kit went to school in Mississippi, but the four years left him more estranged from his father with the fights getting worse every time he was home. After graduation and his training, he said to his mom, sister and grandmother that he couldn’t stay in Mississippi; the state wasn’t big enough for him and his father.
He found work in New York City. He had specialised in surgical nursing, and there was a perfect position for him in the city with bright lights. Loretta came with him at first, claiming she needed to see it before she croaked. After that first trip she frequently travelled back, or demanded Kit came to stay with her for a long weekend. Once Lucas turned, Kit and Loretta became closer than ever, and the bond they share is unbreakable. He longs to fix things with his dad, but every time he tries Lucas hurls abuse at him and Kit isn’t the kind to stand for it so it ends up with them only burning more of the same bridge rather than mending it. At twenty-five, Kit just sort of takes each day with the surprises it brings. He’s got stability for his age, but there’s still a lot out there he’d like to find and experience.
