Paisley adored Shakespeare, but it wasn’t all that she taught. She was required to teach other Literature classes, too. That morning she had a freshman group in the lecture hall for a Feminism in Literature class that she had started teaching the year before. It was an hour of delving into classic novels, tearing through the subtext that would never have been accepted at the time to discuss the strong heroines and the symbolism that enlaced the empowerment of the female characters. The boys in her class often shifted uncomfortably at certain elements, or when the girls got riled up by a particular opinion or academic article that Paisley shared for open discussion. She liked making her students vocal because it at least meant that they were listening in the first place. It was all too easy for them to zone out and daydream an hour away, but that sort of behaviour would not get them through the essay she set at the end of the week. As she was returning the last essay, one girl stopped her to ask about a previous one that she hadn’t received back due to missing class. Paisley had forgotten about it herself, but went to rummage through the bag she kept all the student’s work in, checking the dates and the coloured dividers, worrying she might have lost it when she went further back than she thought it ought to be. Then she saw it; the lone essay. It was in the right place after all, but the right place was just earlier in the semester than she had imagined. It made her realise just how fast time was going. Handing it back to the waiting student, Paisley’s mind remained fixed on time.
It hadn’t felt that long since the night she’d left the date with Prince Charming to show up at Graham’s and confess her feelings for him. Life had been something of a whirlwind since then, she supposed. She spent more time with him and Carson, not thinking twice when the darkness fell and she slipped into bed beside Graham rather than promising him she was okay to drive her blue bug home. Morning kisses were fast becoming the norm, and Blitzen had a bed set up next to Bo’s for those times when she did spend a few too many days away from her own place. She was so comfortable around Graham and Carson that she hadn’t thought about dates or time with them. That didn’t really matter and they were all so happy lately. The more Paisley let her mind wander on the way back to her office, the more she began adding up dates, counting backwards and trying to figure things out in her head. Then she started thinking about herself, how she felt lately and if there was anything different beyond the smile she wore more nowadays. She couldn’t be totally certain, not without proof, but she knew enough to know there was a chance something wasn’t right.
Paisley dumped her bags and the laptop case in her office and locked it up again before turning towards the drama department. She had a feeling Graham had a class now, but she didn’t care. There were times when Paisley could have the patience of a saint and there were times when she was the complete opposite; this was the latter. She slipped into the back of the theatre and moved down far enough that she might be seen without disturbing the class that was indeed in session. Her blue eyes were fixed on Graham the entire time, waiting for him to see her and figure out that this wasn’t just a call to drop an invitation for lunch, or to see if he wanted her to pick up dinner when she collected Carson that afternoon.

Theory wasn’t Graham’s favourite part of the job but it was still one that needed to be taught and Graham, as the professor, had to teach it. It would have been so much better if he could just pawn off this part of the job to someone else, let them deal with it all but it wasn’t possible. And he couldn’t cancel it and do something else because Carson wasn’t with him. And even then, there were reasons he kept colouring books and things to entertain his son at the ready when these classes come up and Paisley couldn’t take him off his hands for the time. Today, it was more because his mind was roaming that he didn’t want to be teaching the theory class than anything else.
It hadn’t been that long since he and Paisley confessed their feelings and it felt like a whirlwind still. A good one, for sure but still one. She was spending more and more time at their place, Blitzen and Bo had beds side by side, though they sprawled across both and each other after the exhaustive days they shared. She had practically moved in and it had felt like she’d been there since the beginning. If he had ever believed in those things, Graham might have thought Clara had a hand in bringing them together. And maybe she did but Graham wasn’t sure if he believed in things like that so he wasn’t letting himself think about it. Instead, he was focusing on them and the three of them becoming a family. And right then, getting through the dullest part of the job in his eyes. Thank god he was able to get the theatre for it. He could roam around while he spoke, chatted with his class, argued good naturedly, tore apart sections of plays to get to the true heart of the emotions.
They was in the middle of one of their usual good natured back and forth arguments when Graham saw Paisley at the back of the theatre. He quickly finished up his part of the speech and let them talk among themselves, getting a feel for the piece they'd just been dissecting. He strode up the aisle, his grin getting bigger the closer he got to the stunning English Lit professor. "Hello beautiful. What brings you by?" He asked, leaning in for a quick kiss on her cheek. They didn't need his students getting a hold of this and running wild with it. He could barely get them restrained when there was nothing for them to grab hold of! Graham didn't think anything about Paisley being there. She showed up a dozen or more times a week so finding her in the back of the theatre was nothing new for them. The look on her face however, was something new. "What's wrong, Paisley?" He asked, trying to comfort her, rubbing her arm.

Things with Graham had been incredible. Paisley absolutely loved being with him, and spending more time with Carson. It really did feel like they had jumped in the deep end though that night they finally faced up to their feelings. Everything had moved so quickly between them even though Paisley had been determined to take things slow with Graham for the sake of both father and son. She didn’t want to screw this up. She didn’t want something to happen that pushed Graham to regret, or forced an awkward wedge between them whilst an innocent little boy paid the price. It was like they couldn’t help themselves though. She had said over and over that she didn’t need to race into this relationship, or move too quickly, but Graham hadn’t helped her stay away. When she had pulled away he pulled her back, and Paisley couldn’t say no to him, even though she mumbled plenty about not wanting him to regret them.
They might have moved fast, and there might have been jokes from the likes of Bridget already, but Paisley was comfortable with what they had. It was like an extension of what had existed before that confession and the kiss that followed. She didn’t feel like she needed to drive home from his when she was tired, she got to curl up when they were watching movies now, and Carson was always happy to see her around in the mornings when she had spent the night. The possibility of a baby was something very different though. It would change the dynamic even if Paisley was worrying about nothing. A feeling deep down told her that this wasn’t going to be a false alarm though. She couldn’t call herself an expert on the matter, but her instinct was kicking in now. She feared how Graham would react. He was a brilliant man, a wonderful father, and a stand-up guy, but their relationship was still very much new. Babies hadn’t even factored into Paisley’s thoughts for the future yet. She was still figuring out whether a trip to the cinema or the swimming pool would be best for the three of them at the weekend!
Graham’s smile almost melted her, but she wasn’t the type to run away from the things that needed addressing; even if they could turn out to be heartbreakingly painful. She flickered a small smile back when he kissed her cheek and glanced around to make sure no one had noticed. Paisley was pretty sure there were rumours about her and Graham, but she wasn’t the type to confirm or deny them to students. She took a deep breath and faltered for just a second before she found her words. “I think I might be pregnant.” She said quietly, pausing for a moment before she felt like she had to say something more. “I haven’t done a test or anything, but…” She trailed off and glanced around. They were a way back from the class, but she didn’t trust luck to keep her words from the earshot of the students. “There are signs.” She finished, finally, choosing to spare all the details and clues she had pieced together since finding that lone, dated essay in the back of her case.

Graham liked to think he was a good teacher. He would never be one of those types to lecture constantly and get angry with his students for not doing as he asked. Acting was about expression and feeling the emotion in any given scene. A little heated conversation definitely didn't hurt that. In fact, Graham habitually welcomed it into the classroom and on the stage when they were working out a new scene. By the time it was being performed, he expected it to be damn near perfect but with this class especially, he wasn't overly concerned if it wasn't. They were only freshman and still needed to get their feet wet with the process. Graham had always loved that part, the getting to figure out the new character. He'd hide away for a weekend or more, trying to get a feel for the inner workings and just have fun thinking up a background if one wasn't provided, wonder the story behind why this character didn't like watermelon or whatever the quirky little details were. Graham welcomed the noise in the theatre as well. The more noise the better, especially when they were doing these sorts of assignments.
He liked noise in the house, too. Carson might have known how to clean up after himself but when the little boy was playing, he was quite loud and Graham loved that. He only wished the kindergartener could spend more time with kids his own age or had a sibling to play with. But playdates were hard to come by when his father was as busy as Graham was and though Paisley did help out quite a bit, he couldn't ask her to take on more. They already shared so much responsibility and as of right now, it really wasn't hers. Graham wanted that to change of course, but baby steps. Eventually he would ask Paisley those two serious questions that were sitting on the tip of his tongue. He came with a big of baggage and it scared some people away. Paisley was different of course, and Graham knew that. She loved his son as if he were hers and Graham wouldn't have had it any other way. In fact, he needed it to be that way. He couldn't give his heart away to anyone but Paisley wasn't anyone. They had told each other they would take things slow but that didn't seem to happen. Every time she turned to leave, he was pulling her back in; one more minute, one more kiss, just one more.
Graham had a habit of leaving his students up on the stage, working through whatever assignment he'd given them while he moved further up the rows of seats to settle in and do other things. He always kept an ear out for them of course, but he usually let them figure it out on their own, giving them advice whenever they needed it from where he was. Paisley's words stunned the actor long enough for her to get more explanation out. There hadn't been talk of children or anything else that were considered serious conversations. Eventually, sure, Graham wanted Paisley to move into the house, maybe put it up for sale and find something else, though the house was big enough for a small family. Lucky for him, he was quite able to speed through thoughts that should, under normal circumstances, take long talks and plenty of them over time, in a matter of seconds. Graham had always wanted a two or more kids. He'd been an only child and though that meant they were able to do a lot more when he'd been a child, it was also really lonely. He'd promised himself that when he got older and had kids of his own, there would be more than just the one. And then everything happened and his son was left an only child.
The young father had resigned himself to believing their family dynamic would stay the way it was; just the two of them. And then Paisley invaded and Graham couldn't see a future without her in it. He wanted her there and Carson was already planning weekend trips to the park with Paisley in mind. She was in all of the duo's plans, whether she wanted to be there or not. And he couldn't tell his son that after all those times of Paisley being around, practically growing up with her within arm's reach, that she would be turning away and saying goodbye to the five year old. Paisley, it seemed, couldn't do it either. Having another child might have been a forgotten thought but it was front and center now with Paisley standing in front of him, worried about every little detail. Forgetting about where they were, what they were supposed to be doing, Graham pulled Paisley against him, picking her right up off her feet and spinning her around, laughing all the while. "I love you." He said, setting her down on her feet again and kissing her. "We're going to be parents." He said in awe, pulling away from the English professor. His reaction was probably not what Paisley was expecting, or it was exactly what she was expecting. Either way, Graham was beyond excited about the news.

Paisley’s experiences in the past had taught her not to get ahead of herself when it came to thinking about the future. That didn’t stop her getting caught up in the present though. She was wrapped up in the moments with Graham and the time they had with Carson wriggled in between them, too. It was something she already had gotten used to, forget getting used to it. It just felt right and that had filled her with some nervous butterflies when she realised it. Diving into a relationship with a man who had a small child was a big thing for some people, but Paisley loved Carson as much as she loved the drama professor who resembled him. He wasn’t a hindrance or a bother to her. There might have been some long pauses after innocently awkward questions or interruptions where she looked at Graham not knowing whether to laugh or hide, but she loved it all. Nothing in the world could make her change what they shared now. She just hadn’t wanted to get ahead of herself and ruin the little moments worrying about the future, or wondering what might be in store for them.
Now, all she could do was worry. Her thoughts were racing in a million different directions, some soothing, some panicking, and most of them just asking question after question. If there was one thing Paisley couldn’t stand it was not having the answers. She understood that she wouldn’t ever know everything, but this was her body, her future with Graham. On one hand she wanted to know why it had taken so long for her to notice something felt different, not to mention the fact that she was roughly three weeks late. For a woman who considered herself pretty organised, she felt like she had been fairly scatter-brained, and she blamed it on the giddiness of the new relationship. She was catching herself daydreaming when she was supposed to be grading papers during the day, and putting off presentation planning to grab a long lunch with Graham instead. Paisley was now wondering about all kinds of things, some of which weren’t even necessary worries, like; who would take over her classes if she took leave from the college, or the fact that she had never touched a diaper in her life, let alone changed one. She hadn’t babysat growing up and she was the only child of an only child! The more she thought about it the more she realised how very little she knew about babies. Even Carson had been almost out of the toddler stage when she had first met Graham and him.
Graham spinning her around startled her. Paisley clung to him, but one of her shoes still managed to slip off somewhere during the spin. She was dramatically uneven when her feet touched the ground again, but a faint, terrified smile, still touched her lips for a second. "I love you, too." She whispered, glad to hear those words. They brought a fraction of calm to the storm raging inside her at that moment. She spied her missing shoe just behind Graham and stooped to pick it up. "And we-" She stopped herself, instead focusing on slipping her shoe back onto her foot, regaining a few inches of height again. Paisley had almost said "and we're already parents", but quickly caught herself before she awkwardly messed up. Graham was the one who was already a parent. She just helped him out and looked after Carson when he needed time to run around or was busy. She loved Carson more than she could say, but she was not a parent to him, and she had to remember that. Tucking him in some nights and fixing up scrapes when he fell didn’t change that, and Paisley didn’t want to step in and tarnish Clara’s memory. She just loved that little boy. "We don’t know for sure yet. I mean, I need a test, or a doctor, or something. I just know my body is different and a baby is a strong probability." There was also a strong probability that at least one of Graham’s student had seen the two of them at the back and gossip would probably soon be flying. "I’m not in class until three now if you want…I mean, we can find out for sure?" Paisley usually prided herself on being a wordsmith, but right now words were getting stuck in her throat and what she wanted to say was coming out hesitant and she knew her voice was shaking. She couldn’t remember a time when she had felt so nervous, and here Graham was practically over the moon! Why hadn’t that been enough to calm her completely?

Asking Paisley to move in, to marry him, to legally become Carson's mother had been questions swirling around in Graham's brain for too long now. He needed to sort them all out and get on with planning it out and asking her what her thoughts on the matter were. He wanted her to share his home, share his children, share his last name. He wanted it all but they'd promised each other baby steps and those were not baby steps. He couldn't think of another person who treated his son so well, like he was her own. Even his teachers and babysitters never quite reached that level though they claimed to adore the little tyke and Graham was sure they did.
Graham had the papers for adoption hidden away in a drawer in his desk in the hopes that Paisley would say yes. They weren't quite there yet, she still needed to say yes to another, equally easy question. Or maybe that was just Graham. Maybe he was the only one thinking they were easy questions. He knew he would have to ask them to find out but it was a process and he wanted to have everything perfect in an imperfect world. It wasn't ever going to happen and Graham would have to come to terms with that but for a little while yet, he would continue to believe he could make it work. Until then he would continue to teach his students the finer details of stage work and keep his family, both Paisley and Carson, as happy as he could manage.
Seeing Paisley at the back of his class wasn't a strange sight and Graham had been thankful for the moment away from the stage and the students who could figure out what exit, stage left actually meant. It was kind of ridiculous to be honest but he would get them sorted out soon enough. The news she brought was exciting and Graham lost his head for a minute or two there. He had always wanted to have more than one child. Carson was great and a total sweetheart but Graham had grown up an only child and it hadn't been any fun to have no one to share his toys with or tell his secrets to. He wanted Carson to be able to ask him or Paisley anything at all, be open with them but there were just some things that a kid or teenager needed to ask someone their own age and were too unsure to ask a friend. "Of course. I mean we're already parents but another little one running around would be nice. This class is almost over. I can shut it down now, grab my bag and we can go. Give me two minutes." He said, pressing a hard kiss to her lips before heading back to the stage. "We're done for the day. Pack up and I'll see you next class. And for the love of Shakespeare, please figure out your staging." He said to the class, gathering up his things and haphazardly shoving it all in his bag before rushing back up to take Paisley's hand. "Lead the way, Love."

Paisley was really starting to question this baby steps approach of theirs. She knew why they had chosen to do it in the first place, but it felt like all they had managed to achieve was that feeling of rebellion each time they broke their own rules about taking things slow. It was like being a teenager who knew better, but still gave in to their hormones. It was impossible to keep it slow and safe when she was waking up so many mornings in Graham’s bed, or when she slipped up in a conversation and said she’d be home soon when she meant she’d be at his place soon. She understood every reason why they had agreed to trying to take things slow, to building strong foundations before becoming serious and committing further to each other. It just also felt like they wanted to skip all of that and jump straight in with both feet sometimes. Paisley felt those daring butterflies, and the temptation to just throw everything she had into her relationship with Graham. If it turned out she was pregnant then she supposed she had already done that. Maybe whatever deity was out there had seen enough of them failing at their slow dance and figured it was time to move things along with a helping hand.
Graham’s words echoed in her head even after that kiss, even after he walked off to end the class. He had said they were parents. Both of them, together. She watched him dismiss the class and gather his things, her heart beating loudly in her chest as she thought about just how in love with him she was. She really was absolutely crazy about him. When he reached her again the first thing she did was grab him and pull him close, kissing him so hard it actually hurt a little. Her teeth clashed together, and she nipped her own cheek as she crashed her lips against his, but she didn’t care. Paisley just lost her fingers in his hair and kissed him to try and say what she didn’t have words for. In that moment, and for the one that followed, she didn’t care if anyone saw them acting utterly unprofessional. Graham had acknowledged her as something she had been nervous to mention, and it showed that all her love and caring of Carson hadn’t gone unnoticed or been taken for granted; not that she had ever expected it to be. She was always telling Graham she was happy to be there, to help, to do more.
She took a deep break after pulling away and ran her fingers through her blonde hair. “Um…campus doctor?” She asked with a light shrug, knowing the medical centre had a walk in service everyone used. She had been in before when she’d had a chest infection to get some anti-biotics. She gripped his hand tight the whole way there, and had to force herself to let go when they got there so she could speak at the reception desk. Thankfully, with it being near the end of the semester most students were powering through study and exam prep and ignoring any signs of illness, so the waiting room was practically empty. Paisley was seen to quickly, but the whole appointment was like a blur. Her hands were shaking and everything sounded fuzzy in her ears, as though they were stuffed with cotton wool. She came back out to Graham, a handful of leaflets shoved into her bag. “I was right. I’m pregnant.” She told him, feeling her stomach doing nervous flips now that it was more than a feeling, but an actual truth. “And I think I need to sit down.” She gripped his arm, and looked around for a chair. She knew it was just the shock of the truth hitting her, but Paisley suddenly felt entirely overwhelmed. “I’m not sure that three o’clock class is happening.” Her head was racing towards a dozen different things, but none of them were the role of the fool in Shakespeare’s plays.

Graham had been feeling like Paisley was a part of his family for a while now. It often struck him that they were being foolish taking things slowly but it seemed like the right thing to do where Carson was concerned. Graham didn't want things to move quickly and then fizzle out. Carson adored Paisley and Graham didn't want to break the little boy's heart before he even knew what that meant. Graham loved Paisley, had no problems shouting as much from the rooftops if that's what she wanted because it cost nothing to speak the truth for him. He'd been thinking about their next steps for a while because they had a child to consider. But it was pointless when even the five-year-old in their life expected Paisley to be around all the time and got a little disappointed and perhaps even a little depressed when she couldn't be there for whatever reason. Besides, she was practically moved in, spent nearly every night at the house. They were already a family, whether they'd wanted it to happen fast or night. It was high time they took the final steps into making it all official.
Another baby would be a bit stressful if she were pregnant but Graham loved the often chaotic moments of the early days. Not that he didn't believe Paisley, he did but they still needed the doctor's to check and make sure their little baby was healthy and everything was as it was supposed to be at this stage. Figuring out a due date would be handy as well so they had a timeline as to when they needed to get everything in order. It was a big process and a ton of things had to be done but it was probably still early enough that they could just simmer in the fact that they were really making a go at this family thing. Graham was excited. He had wanted more children but had never really thought it would happen after everything. He'd been planning on spending his life making sure Carson was well cared for and wanted for nothing. Clara must have been watching out for them and decided they couldn't live their lives in a bubble. He believed Clara had brought Paisley into their lives, given them laughter and joy and the love he hadn't quite known he'd been missing. Graham wasn't quite sure when his thoughts switched from being one parent to being two parents but it had happened so seamlessly that he hadn't ever realised that he'd started to ask Paisley her thoughts on the little things as well her opinion on bigger issues. She'd been put on Carson's school records as though she'd always been meant to be there, no thoughts whatsoever that it was too soon or even a little odd to have her there; it just was.
There would be no chance of suggesting they weren't together after this but Graham couldn't find it in him to give a single damn. He'd never denied it before either, but neither had he indulged the idea simply because it wasn't anyone's business. "Perfect." He said with an easy, happy smile after that kiss. He held her hand the entire way to the office, waited in the waiting room while she was seen to by the doctors. It killed him not to be in there with her but he didn't want to crowd her and knew that if it weren't true, she might need some time alone, or if it was true, she might have a dozen questions for the doctor that she didn't want him hearing. He fiddled with his phone while he waited, anxious to see Paisley again. He stood when she came back through the door, a little more ashen than she'd been before but he was at her side in an instant. Joy and excitement and love crowded around in his chest, making it a little difficult to breathe. He wanted to dance and shout and crow but Paisley needed his attention and focus and helped her quickly to a chair. Already, as he'd been through this once before, his brain was running through the list of things that needed to be done. "Take a minute. It's okay. Deep breaths." He said in a firm but gentle voice. If she had a bit of a panic attack, at least they were in the right place but he didn't think that would happen. She just needed a minute with the news. "Well, I'd call your TA if you weren't so stubborn and actually had one." he teased lightly. "But we'll go to your office and get through that much. One thing at a time and cancelling your next class is first. Okay?" He asked, crouched down in front of her.

Paisley could at least say that they had tried to be sensible and take things slow. They had set about this with the very best intentions, but emotions had been a lot stronger, and when she promised Carson she’d stay for dinner, and then a movie, and that she’d help him make pancakes for breakfast it didn’t exactly help herself and Graham keep their hands off each other. In fact, it just pushed them together. There were nights like that when it was too late to go home, when she had done her grading while Graham tucked Carson in and she curled up on the couch. She’d borrowed his clothes when she didn’t have pyjamas, and then his bed was perfect for snuggling up in…It was foolish to carry on like that and kid themselves that they were going to take baby steps. They’d slip up and then make some ridiculous promise to step back and slow down again, but it never lasted. It was an illusion that they hadn’t jumped in the deep end holding hands and then tangled the rest of their limbs together in an attempt to find the surface. In truth, neither of them had come up for air yet. They were drowning together and it was like neither of them cared.
She didn’t know how to process everything right now. Not that anything that was happening was a bad thing, but it was just shocking. If anyone had pulled Paisley to one side a couple of months ago and told her she would be curling up with Graham most nights and then discovering that she was pregnant with him baby she would have called campus security and had this clearly crazy person escorted away. It was happening though. It was all real. It all seemed like a dream; the kind that came after a night of too much wine and a morning of sleeping in. She looked up at Graham and managed to shoot him one of the looks she reserved for students who skipped out on assigned reading. “TA’s do too much that they’re not asked to do.” She grumbled. At least if she did everything herself she could only blame herself when things were forgotten or misplaced. Paisley didn’t want anyone else treading on her territory. She was protective like that and often joked it was part of the ‘only child syndrome’ which she actually knew nothing about. She took a deep breath and pushed her hair back from her face. “Okay. I’m okay.” She rose to her feet and made her way outside of the clinic.
Paisley was halfway to her office with Graham when she stopped, placing her hand on Graham’s arm. It was like everything had just dawned on her again. She turned to him, looking up at the man she loved with wide eyes. “We’re having a baby. You and me.” She let out a short laugh and squeezed Graham’s arm softly. So many thoughts were racing through her mind now, beyond the cancelling of her afternoon class. She had to find the time to go back to Mill Valley to tell her mom and Josh, and what was the college’s policy on maternity leave? “I told you to get Carson rollerskates for his birthday – not a sibling.” She said as her thoughts rolled round to the little boy who was still in school right then, oblivious to the chaos that their lives were about to become. Everything was about to change and Paisley hoped it was for the best. She wanted it to be for the best. This could be the start of something wonderful after all.
