Kat was a resilient. There was no doubt about that. Her best friend had died a little over a year ago, yet she still got up every day to participate in real life. She got up to take care of her niece, who happened to look a lot like her mom (Kat's sister who also happened to be her best friend). That was hard. Every time Kat looked at Karlie, all she saw was Chloe. There wasn't a day that went by that Kat didn't think of her sister or the accident. But Kat didn't let that stop her from living life, especially when she had Karlie to think about. Today was a little harder than usual for Kat to fake the fact that she was happy. For some reason, she had a dream that her sister was still alive. It upset Kat. It mostly upset her that she couldn't hold her sister one more time. It hurt to know that her sister wasn't coming back. It hurt to know that Karlie would never get to meet the most amazing woman Kat had ever met. Sure, Kat knew that she could help Chloe's memory live on by sharing memories and photos of Chloe with Karlie, but that didn't feel like enough for Kat. She felt that Karlie was getting cheated out of the best mom, and she hated that fact.
Kat had dropped Karlie off at daycare, but she decided to call off from work today. She didn't feel that she could properly do her job when all she wanted to do was cry. So, she went home. She pulled out a few photo albums, leafing through them as she cried over the cherished memories of her sister. She did that for about an hour and a half before pulling herself out of the funk she was in. She changed her clothes, washed her face, and made her way to Starbucks. Why Starbucks? Because everyone was extremely nice there. She knew it was their job and all, but it still felt genuine, and every time she got upset, she went to Starbucks.
The line was always extremely long, but Kat stood in line until she got to the front. She ordered herself a medium peppermint mocha, smiling when the person took her credit card. Once she was done paying, she made her way to the pick-up line, picking up her drink when her name was called. She thanked the barista, and went to turn around, bumping into someone. She stopped in her tracks, feeling terrible.
"I'm so sorry! I didn't see you!"

Alfie worked long hours, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. He liked his job, loved it even. So many people he graduated with were trying to become partners in law firms, fight to be a ruthless lawyer in a sea already full of sharks, but he was content with his position as a Federal Law Clerk. It put him side by side with the top judge in the state and he was learning so much just by being there. Alfie was of the mindset that no one was ever too old to learn, and until he felt ready to take to the judgeship himself it was perfect for him. He was able to see so much, have responsibility that he never imagined when he first enrolled at law school. He thought his job was so much more exciting that working for some corporate law firm, or fighting for a position with the DA’s office. Alfie met people through his position and got to be the voice of the judge when he wasn’t around. It was quite a prestigious job to have and he only got it from graduating at the top of his law class and impressing the judge he currently worked for. It hadn’t been easy and Alfie did everything he could to prove that he had earned that spot; his employment wasn’t a mistake and he wouldn’t let anyone think so.
The only thing about his job was that the long hours constantly meant he was running out for coffee. When he was in court he had to make do with vending machine swill on the breaks appointed by his boss, the judge, but when he was just doing case prep or chasing down testimonies and evidence for the trials, he could stop off along the way. He had spent his morning in meetings with the DA before he needed to be back at the courthouse to talk to the judge about the upcoming trial at the end of the week. There was time for a lunch stop off at Starbucks though first.
He joined the line and replied to some messages on his phone. Alfie lived a life away from work, keeping himself busy with friends so he didn’t drown in the world of courtroom dramas and federal crimes. He made plans with two friends before he ordered himself a Grande latte and then moved down to wait for it to be prepared. He looked back at his phone, confirming another set of plans when someone suddenly bumped into him. Alfie looked up and flashed a small, polite smile. “It’s fine. Really.” He said reassuringly, reaching around the woman to collect his drink and tip the barista who made it.
