Lately, all Karlie wanted to watch was Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. While Kat liked it better than most other shows out there for little kids, it was starting to get on her nerves. Her mornings consisted of it. The hours Karli was awake after work were consisted of it. The only time Kat ever got a break from it was when Karlie was asleep, and usually by that time, Kat was actually wondering what would happen next. It was quite sad, seeing as Kat was an intelligent woman who already knew how to fix the simple problems that they asked the children to solve. So this morning, while Kat was running around like a chicken with her head cut off trying to get ready for work after waking up late, she had set Karlie in front of the television in order to keep her preoccupied while she hurried around the apartment. Once Kat was ready, she rushed over to Karlie's daycare, checking her in. She then rushed to work, apologizing to her coworkers for being late.
Once Kat had settled into her desk, she took a deep breath. She was a little out of sorts, so she needed to recollect herself. She forced a smile to her face before opening her eyes, letting the air out of her lungs. She flipped through the folders on her desk, seeing what all was in store for her this week. She noticed the biggest case was to be judged by a well-known judge named Michael Dickenson. That meant catching a cab over to the court house within the next half hour. She shoved some stuff into her briefcase, bounding down the five flights of stairs to the main floor of the office building. She hailed for a taxi, getting one rather quickly for New York.
"Court House, please."
She told the driver, with a giant smile on her face. Kat's voice was soft and high pitched, which could catch people off guard. It surprised them that Kat had a reputation for being a cut-throat lawyer in New York, yet when she opened her mouth upon their initial meeting, her voice was not fitting. She liked the fact that people thought she was so kind and didn't have a backbone. It made her feel like she had an edge on them.
Kat paid the taxi driver and exited the car. She made her way to the judges chambers, seeing her friend Rhydian. She figured that she could stay and chat for a few minutes before heading to see the judge. She smiled, waving at him.
"Hey! Fancy seeing you here." **************************************************************************

Rhydian was a busy man on a good day but when he was delegated from his usual work with the courts in general to a specific judge, something big was happening. Of course, right now it was all hush, hush and would stay that way until the courts and everyone else involved finally figured out what they were going to do about it all. Judge Dickenson was one of the best and Rhydian was lucky to have been chosen for the gig but it also meant adding more hours to the long ones he already worked just to keep up with everything. It was a demanding job and a more often than not an unthankful one but it was something Rhydian enjoyed. It wasn't what his father had wanted from his son but Rhydian had other siblings that were far better at making their father proud. So he left it to them to deal with their father.
Sipping at his coffee, Rhydian spent the better part of his day in the Judge's chambers going through everything that needed to be covered and then making notes of the things he needed to double check, clear up or research for the first time. It was an exhausting job but someone had to do it and he was quite proud that it was him. Others might have thought him crazy but they were idiots. He had his father's skill but he lacked the ice in his heart to do what his father did. There was no doubt in anyone's mind that he could be as vicious and cut-throat as he needed to be but anyone who really knew him, knew he was a marshmallow inside. Of course, the only one who seemed to know it around there was Royce and she teased him mercilessly about it.
Of course, he had his own things to tease her about so it was pretty even. When Judge Dickenson's secretary mentioned an upcoming appointment, Rhydian knew to make himself scarce so he packed up the things he needed and was planning on heading back to his office to drop it all off before grabbing a quick bite somewhere close. He'd been craving one of those pretzels from a vendor and he knew there was one just outside. Though he didn't have pretzels everyday so he hoped he had some in now. Barely out the door of Judge Dickenson's chambers his name was called. With his nose in his phone, wondering if Royce was able to meet him outside for that fresh air that was always needed during trials like these. He finished sending the message first, because he'd started it and hated stopping something in the middle when it was unnecessary. "It's where I always am." He pointed out before even looking up from his phone. After hitting send, he glanced up as he ran the fingers of his free hand through his hair, messing up the already messy locks.
