PERSONALITY: Colby is a funny man, often called charismatic by his superiors and the older ladies in need of medical attention. He’s been a charmer since he was still in nappies with a smile that has weakened the knees of many a ladies. Colby is however a down to Earth, rather be on the farm than in the city country boy. After his parents died, he and his sister moved to Alabama to live with their grandparents on their farm. It was some of the best years of his life. He learned so much, loved all of it and learned that determination is the key to success. Colby is a family oriented man, both happy and worried about his sister when she made the move to New York as well. He is his parent’s son, tough as nails with a no nonsense attitude towards some of the more disgruntled passengers. He can be kind and friendly enough but he does have the ability to turn on a dime and become a very difficult man. That usually only happens when they’ve got someone in the back of the ambulance being uncooperative. He’s a easy man to get along with, athletic and rarely turns down a chance to run through the park, no matter the time of day. He’s intelligent, taking a minor in psychology because he thought it would be helpful. A romantic at heart, Colby rarely gets the chance to show that side of him. He’s aware he can be a little intimidating but he’s really just a big cuddly, teddy bear.MOTHER: Marie Grimm & deceased

HISTORY: Marie and Ben met in college, one to be a financier while the other wanted to be a firefighter. They were introduced through friends, connected instantly and from there they were practically inseparable. Their friends teased them, called them cute and said theirs was the stuff of fairy tales. They were married young, had two kids, Colby and Phoebe two years apart and life was good for them in the city. The kids had tons of friends, played in sports and did all those things that kids did. And then the tragic attacks occurred on the eleventh of September and everything was thrown upside down. While some were lucky and didn’t lose any family in the tragedy, others weren’t so much. Colby and Phoebe were a pair of the unlucky ones. They lost not one but both of their parents on that day. Marie worked in the first building and hearing of the attacks, Ben rushed with the rest of his crew and all the others. He didn’t make it into the building. He was close, too close and was taken down by falling debris.
Colby doesn’t remember a lot of it. He was in a bit of a daze but when the police showed up at the school to collect him and his little sister, he knew it wasn’t good. They set everything up so that the siblings could stay at a friend’s house until their grandparents could get from Alabama where they lived. They arrived the next day to gather two grief stricken grandchildren into their arms and comfort them like only grandparents could. Marie’s parents had both passed away in a car accident when Colby had been five so they were her only family now. They stayed in the city for a while, figuring it all out, waiting for the bodies to be released so they could have a the funerals. The therapists and psychologists said their usual routine would be good for them but it was hard. Christmas rolled around and it wasn’t the same. It was too difficult to Wendy and Thomas sat them down and offered them a choice. They could stay in New York, they would sell the farm and move completely to the city or they could move to Alabama and start over.
They chose to start over. They couldn’t however, bring it upon themselves to sell the house. Neither Wendy nor Thomas know why but they couldn’t. Instead, they covered everything, packed up what the kids wanted and moved them to the south. The following seven years were filled with new memories, new friends, teammates and classmates. It was a little difficult to get used to at first, but that was completely understandable; especially after the principle of the school decided their situation needed to be shared with the entire school. Needless to say, he wasn’t the most popular man in the Grimm’s eyes. However, despite all that, they settled in well. Colby took to football like a fish to water, Phoebe became a cheerleader her freshman year when she started at the same school as her big brother. Colby never really stopped worrying about his sister of course, but the pair seemed to be adjusting well. And then Colby became a senior in high school and he really had to think about everything. Where did he want to go, what did he want to do, did he want to stay local or go out of state? There were so many questions and he didn’t have the answer to any of them.
When the acceptance letter for NYU, Colby felt it was a sign that he needed to go back and face his demons. The end of August rolled round and he packed his bags into the back of that old Chevy, hugged his family and promised he would be back at Christmas. New York wasn’t as scary as he’d thought it would be. He’d been right freaked out and got worse the closer to the city he’d gotten. Before he’d left, his grandparents told him of the house they hadn’t been able to sell, yet another sign he thought, so when he got to the city, he spent some time searching for the house and then just sitting in the truck outside it. It was a quiet neighbourhood, nice enough. Colby didn’t have a ton of memories of the place, having blocked most of them out because of the pain but he could imagine himself and Phoebe running around the streets as kids, learning to ride bikes and all the things kids were meant to learn young. He spent some time cleaning up the place, making it into a home again. He offered one of the spare rooms to a friend the second half of the year when his funding somehow dried up. And three and a half years later, he graduated from NYU with his family in the crowd, cheering. He stuck around because Phoebe had chosen to do the same thing as her big brother and face the demons of her childhood. And now at twenty five, Colby is glad he didn’t decide to go back to Alabama. He knew he could at any time, no questions asked but he found he liked being back in the city. Even now it can be overwhelming but he’s pushing through because he feels like it’s something he has to do.
