DISLIKES: the use of his full name, fussy customers, getting into trouble, getting slapped or hit, those who put very little effort into their appearance, sappy movies, harsh criticism, people who are angry for no reason, puddles, waiting rooms, password rules, eating too much junk food, bar creepers, weddings, funerals, fake politeness, explaining his name, cruel remarks about his family.
FEARS: heights, dying alone and his body not being found for days, losing an important case one day and it being his fault..
SECRETS: When he was scrimping and saving to get the money to go to college, Ulysses was pretty good at hustling others, especially at pool or card games. It almost got him into trouble with a pretty bad guy and he had no other choice but to get the hell out of Dodge, so to speak..
PERSONALITY: Ulysses is a confident young man who often mocks his own flaws so that he doesn’t seem arrogant. He’s a trouble maker, often unable to back away from something that might bend or break the rules. He doesn’t do anything too extreme, but it he can get a rush from something then he’s likely to try it. This goes for forbidden romances, sneaking past VIP ropes and pranking the dorms at campus, despite not even living there. He’s slightly charismatic, but not overly so, and it’s often knocked aside by his boyish and immature sense of humour that he shares with his friends. He might not seem it away from the classroom, but Ulysses is educated. It might not be an expensive schooling or anything special, but he knows a lot of fact and figures and had a knack for recalling them all relatively easy. He’s adventurous and would rather blow off a weekend in New York for a spontaneous road trip that could take him anywhere and everywhere with the people he can have the most fun with. He’s actually the kind of guy who is helpful and, surprisingly, he does have other people’s best interest at heart. Why else would he want to help them out in the courtroom? Ulysses just doesn’t let it show very often. In some ways he almost puts on a one of the guys act that disguises that sweeter side to his personality. He does it to keep people from sneaking closer to him and then catching him unaware with feelings and the like. He’s not the greatest at expressing his emotions since he’s lost things in the past. He’s a little on the reckless side, finding fun in fights and bar brawls when he should probably be avoiding them all. Still, he’s not really a bad guy, he’s just made a few questionable choices over the years!

HISTORY: When David was a little boy, all he ever wanted to be was a hero who could change the world and the lives of others. When the best fate could do was hand him a costume for his birthday, David read books, learnt of the epics and eventually let that dream fade to the back of his mind for the slow days at work. He didn’t have the greatest high school education; he had a learning disability that went unnoticed for the most part and college never called out to him. He worked all of his life for a sporting goods store, clambering his way slowly up that particular food chain. He met Rebecca when she moved to the city after college and after a few years of convincing her, they married and started a family. Since David had never been able to fulfil his dreams of being a hero, he passed that ambition onto his two children when they arrived, handing them the most peculiar names from the stories he favoured most; Ulysses and Arcadia. Rebecca liked anything and everything unique. Hell, if their neighbour had a similar rosebush in the garden she would insist they dig theirs up and replace it with something else!
Life was relatively simple. David might not have achieved anything great, but his kids idolised him and he tucked them into bed each night with stories of their namesakes; although, Dante’s Divine Comedy was a little heavy for a ten year old to understand. The children were bullied slightly for their names, but they got over it quickly enough. Every kid got bullied for their name and at least Ulysses didn’t have any of the annoying rhyming ones; Lucas-doofus, Amy-Lamey Bryce has lice…It was a bit of a burden, but most of the kids grew bored and out of that phase quickly enough for everyone to move on from. His childhood was relatively decent. He tormented his sister most days of the week, managed to do something that would have his mom tearing her hair out and often got into trouble without even trying to. He was just a regular kid with a regular family life, for the most part.
Ulysses was always a mischievous little boy. He got into trouble where he could and then tried to talk himself out of it. One day, a friend of Rebecca’s jokingly said he should be a lawyer, trying to talk himself out of trouble like that. It seemed to be an idea that kept coming back to him as the years ticked by. Their neighbour worked with the police as a specialist they called in on certain cases, and sometimes Ulysses would listen to the adults talking when he really ought to be in bed, asleep. It fuelled his imagination and it was only a matter of time before he started paying more attention to the crime stories on the news and using the internet to find out the answers to the questions his parents refused to answer when he asked. At school, he made pretty good grades and often asked odd questions that were related to the topic in a more roundabout way than the teacher probably would have liked. Still, most of the things he learnt, he could remember, which obviously proved useful for the exams and kept his grades relatively impressive, so long as there were facts and figures to fall back on.
When Ulysses was seventeen, his mom fell sick. She spent quite a bit of time in hospital and eventually required open heart surgery to correct a problem she had had most of her life. Everything went according to plan and Rebecca got better, but she was out of work for close to a year. Hospital bills, regular bills and living expenses meant that the money the parents had saved for their children slowly diminished, leaving them both with very little by way of a college fund. When Ulysses heard the news, he didn’t get angry since he was just relieved that his mom was going to be okay. What it did mean was that he wouldn’t be going to college right away with the rest of his friends. He wanted to stay back, work and save enough money so that he wasn’t relying on loans and handouts for the next four years.
He took a job in a supermarket, working nights and stocking shelves. It was mundane, boring and slow. The pay was relatively decent, but the faster he could get out of there, the better. He took on extra jobs, mainly handyman things when people needed an extra set of hands, but it didn’t come often. Eventually, with the tourists passing through the city and the tricks he had picked up from hanging about pool halls with his friends as a teenager, he became pretty good at hustling pool. It started off as a bit of extra cash, but his confidence grew and he got better at it, eventually being able to make a couple of hundred in a night. He spread the talent, extending it to a few card tricks, too and kept the acts infrequent enough and moving around enough that no one ever really suspected him of doing anything. They were idiotic to take him on in the first place and rise to his challenges. He was twenty when he made the mistake of hustling $500 from a man who didn’t forget a face so easily. Charlie Benet was the kind of guy who had lawyers in his pockets and who could make problems disappear. $500 was nothing to him, but he still didn’t like to lose. He sent one of his lackeys to rough Ulysses up a bit for hustling in one of his bars and taking money from him. Ulysses offered to pay him back, but Charlie wanted more. He wanted the kid in his pocket working for him. If Ulysses accepted, then there would be no way of leaving for college or becoming a lawyer, not without Charlie holding a noose around his neck for the rest of his life.
So, he ran. He told his parents and sister that New York was going to be his home, that he had already been accepted to the college there and was leaving early to find a place to stay and a job to see him through. He figured New York was far enough away from Flagstaff to make it without Charlie sniffing him out. He had never given his real name while hustling, so his family was kept out of everything, while he made a clean getaway and didn’t look back.
For the first few weeks he lived in hostels and shelters until he landed a job at WD-50, giving a hand in the kitchens. Then, with some of the money he had, he found a small apartment to call his home. Finally, he just made the deadline for college applications and by some miracle, he was accepted to study Law. The first few years passed by and Ulysses found a life he could appreciate. He might not have all the money in the world, but he had friends and people who could indulge his wilder side. Still toeing the line of danger most nights, Ulysses is never without an adventure or a challenge to see him through. He might have had a close brush with a dark side before, but he’s not ready to give up on all of the fun, not while he’s still young.
