PERSONALITY: Apollo is a generally easy going guy. His life pretty much centres around Font Bar, and he likes it like that. He’s a city guy for sure and considers New York his home more than anywhere else. He can be pretty quiet about himself since he doesn’t enjoy talking about his life before NYC, but that is the only way in which Apollo is quiet. He’s a energetic life force the rest of the time, usually fuelled on energy drinks and vanilla coke. He’s a bit of a hot mess when it comes to taking life seriously and he considers himself to only be ‘playing adult’ most of the time since he’s nowhere close to being ready to settling down and making life choices that so many people his age have already made – and some lived to regret. He can have a bit of a short fuse at times, but unless someone presses just the right buttons to cause him to lash out at them he’ll take it out on himself and inanimate objects. He’s a flirtatious sod who probably still engages in a few too many flings and one night stands without really thinking about what the consequences might be. He doesn’t think he’ll ever be ready to settle down and have a wife and kids – his fears hold him back.MOTHER: Betty Hannah Westfield, 52.

HISTORY: Betty kind of, sort of married Preston for all the wrong reasons. However, they were young and she was rebellious. He fuelled that, and somehow, through the mutual annoyances of their parents, they ended up married; eloping the day after Betty turned eighteen. No one thought it would last, but they had four children and calmed their lifestyles down considerably. Preston worked long hours with a security firm, and Betty stayed at home to look after the children. People who doubted them started to consider that maybe they had made a mistake in judging them when they had been younger.
That all came to an abrupt end when Apollo was eight. Preston went out in the early evening to grab some milk and never came back. It was horrifically cliché, but a police search found nothing, he didn’t leave a note or make a phone call to anyone in the town. Betty was left alone with four kids and no job. She took the first one she found just to keep food on the table, working the night shift in a diner. People talked though. A lot of folk knew that Preston had abandoned his family and quite a few weren’t all that surprised given his history. Betty and the children had to cope with whispers and harsh comments for a long time, and the children rarely saw their mother because of her work patterns, and because their own schedule with school kept them busy.
Apollo struggled after his dad vanished. Adults wouldn’t tell him what was going on, and he didn’t understand what had happened when everyone sort of forgot he ever existed. Apollo wasn’t the brightest kid in school and he acted out a lot. He got into plenty of fights when kids said anything bad about his family, and he was suspended enough times that he probably ought to have been expelled – teachers took pity on him though, on all of the Westfield children, really. Betty had been in often enough to explain why she couldn’t afford the cost of a field trip, or talk through issues with their teachers when they wouldn’t stop crying, or got into fights, or just didn’t seem as settled as they should have been. Betty did her best, but keeping a roof over their heads was hard work, and made even harder when no one chipped in from her own family to help. Most of the time it was a case of Mika looking after her younger siblings when Betty went to work. Mika wanted a life, too, though, so there were plenty of times when any of them could just go out and she wouldn’t try to stop them because she had friends coming over to watch movies. The general rule between the four children was to do as they pleased, but be home and innocent by the time mom gets in.
This freedom saw Apollo act out and be something of a jerk when he was a teenager. He would sleep with girls without giving a damn about calling them again, and he was off “rebelling” most nights with friends who could buy beer for them all, and taking part in some unsavoury business. He only turned it around when Betty started getting sick more often – nothing serious, but the flu put her off work for a few days, and then it would be a bad back not long after. She was generally just run down, but she needed her children to help out. They decided to get small jobs to contribute something to the household and that saw Apollo get a job at a local bowling alley for three nights a week. It started to turn him around, though he could be an ass when it came to dating, and there were still times when he would go out and get wasted and stagger home to his bed just before Betty got in.
When Apollo was eighteen, Preston was found. It was news coverage about a major car crash that revealed him. He wasn’t in the crash, but had seen it all from where he was having lunch with his family. He had created a new life for himself, completely acting like the one he had with Betty and his children was nothing more than some crazy dream. Apollo saw red and tracked him down once he graduated high school. He yelled at him in front of his new ‘wife’ and kids and proceeded to reveal to the world exactly what Preston had done all those years ago. Before he could hear an excuse or reason, Apollo left, moving to New York and concluding that he hated small towns. The last he ever heard of the man who was supposed to be his father was that everything was falling apart now that his new family knew the truth.
He didn’t actually have a plan when he arrived in New York. He wasn’t planning on attending school there or anything. He got a bar job and lived out of his car until he could afford a place to rent. He had been living there for three years before he went to mixology school. He mastered all he could there and moved onto another bar where for a short time he specialised in nothing but cocktail making. It was a little dull though, and he missed the hustle and bustle of a typical New York Bar. It was how he found himself working in Font, moving up to the position of General Manager when the previous one quit for something bigger and better. He still gets to put his knowledge to good use, but with the accompanying atmosphere of a standard New York bar, with regulars and students and people he can identify with.
