DISLIKES: Failing students, feeling too warm, getting sick, being on medication for life (though he’s grateful to be alive), science fiction movies, smokers, people trying to make him drink on a night out, liars, food that’s too spicy, dry chicken, phones ringing in his classes, long installation times, clocks ticking at night.

PERSONALITY: A warm man, Loudoun is welcoming and friendly to almost everyone he meets unless they give him a reason to act otherwise. He’s fair as a professor, and tries to help his students however he can, though there’s a line he won’t cross and he’s not afraid to fail those who deserve it. Grateful for what he has, Loudoun isn’t the type to squander away his years or his chances. He appreciates the little things and there are plenty of times when he’s nostalgic around people who might not even know him well enough to know what he’s on about, but he’ll still tell them a story. He’s a wordsmith in many ways, but only when the mood takes him. A grounded man, Loudoun knows what he wants out of life and he would like to have it all one day soon, since he’s learnt just how short life can be. He’s loyal and caring and many can call him a selfless man for how he’ll put others first despite his own needs in the world. There’s not many bad bones in his body, but Loudoun will die to protect those he loves the most, and any fights he’s ever been if has been because of that. However, these days he’s more careful because of his health. Loudoun is a charmer, a man who knows romance, but has yet to find the woman of his dreams – or at least one that sticks around. He’s playing the field, out to find the yin to his yang, but no luck so far. Loudoun isn’t the type to be disheartened though. Through heartbreak he remains hopeful.MOTHER: Agnes Angelina Urquhart, 65.

HISTORY: Agnes and Arthur were two fools who met at a pub one night. Agnes was on a date with Arthur’s friend at the time. It was going terribly and Arthur crashed it because he was bored and his friend had done the same to him only the week before and had cost him the beautiful girl he had thought would change his life. He thought it only fair to do the same in return. What he hadn’t planned on was having the quiet thing he saw sitting next to his pal come strolling out of the pub to ask him what he did for a good time then? Seven months later they were engaged, his jilted best friend the best man come the happy day six months after that. Their happy family lived in Edinburgh where both had been born and raised. They had two sons, William and Loudoun. Fine Scottish names for fine Scottish boys.
The boys were both typical boys when they were growing up. They got into scraps with other kids and played in the dirt, traipsing filth through a house Agnes had only just cleaned. They both had good hearts though and would go out of their way to help people. The little old woman who lived at the top of the street could always rely on them to help her carry her shopping from the bus stop to her front door. They were cheeky lads, but they had hearts of gold and their parents were proud of them. They worked hard in school, and both spoke about helping people when they were older. William from the start wanted to go into medical science. He didn’t want to be a doctor, but rather a researcher. Loudoun didn’t make his mind up until a psychology taster class in high school and right then he knew that was for him.
Life was fairly uneventful for Loudoun. He went through the standard landmarks of life; the first kiss, the first date, his first time which was embarrassing and awkward and something he tried to forget as soon as he’d had his second time. He learnt to drive, passed exams and generally lived like every other kid he knew. He breezed through high school, and then sat his highers before going to university at Stirling. Again, there life was fairly standard. He got into the usual student troubles. Scared himself senseless sneaking off down to Logie Kirk after dark and hiding behind gravestones there, slept on the golf course one night when he was locked out of his halls of residence, and ended up swimming in the loch after his graduation when he and some friends realised that there was nothing they could do now to stop them. It was bloody freezing though and Loudoun quickly regretted jumping in, but at the same time was glad he’d done it just so he could say he had.
No, Loudoun was twenty-four when things changed. He’d be the first to admit that he didn’t look after himself exceptionally well. He had just completed his year on training as a psychologist and was about to head back to university to obtain a Masters in Child Psychology and Learning Development. Although he never partied hard during his years as a student, he did live off junk food a little too much and spend less time at the gym than he promised himself in those New Year resolutions. So when he felt groggy he thought nothing of it and figured it was just a tough year, maybe lay off the pizza a bit. It was only when William asked him to be a volunteer for a study he wanted to carry out that anyone noticed anything was wrong. What William was looking into went over Loudoun’s head – he was just helping his big brother out and it was just a few blood tests and some general health work anyway. However when his results came back William called him and told him to get to his doctor right away. He has discovered his little brother had Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis, and it looked like it had been developing for some time.
Further tests revealed that Loudoun had already developed cirrhosis of the liver and needed a liver transplant in order to live beyond the next few years. Everything he had planned was put on hold. His family went through testing to see if any of them were a living match, but there were complications or problems that ruled them out one by one. Loudoun worked on getting his health to the best it could be and the family kept their fingers crossed. It was one hundred and twenty six days later when he was called up in the middle of the night to hear the news that a match had been found for him, and that he needed to come in immediately. Loudoun wasted no time at all and William drove him to the hospital where everything he can remember is just a blur. He woke up a day later in the ICU feeling like absolute shit, but everything had been a success and now he just needed to get better and keep his fingers crossed that his body didn’t reject the liver. Two weeks after, he could go home, moving in with his parents for the time being until he was stronger again. He was on the immunosuppressant medication for the rest of his life but it was a small price to pay to have a life. Now he wanted to live it.
Loudoun waited for the all clear before doing anything strenuous, but he went back to university to get his Masters and then his PhD in Psychology and then he decided he wanted to do something else entirely; teach. But first he wanted to travel. So he did that, and after meeting a girl somewhere between Thailand and Australia he fell in love with her New York accent and followed her there, where she broke his heart six months later to get back with the man who had previously broken hers. Refusing to be knocked down though, Loudoun decided to stay in the big apple. He had an interview for a position at NYU anyway the following week and it seemed a shame to waste such an opportunity. He was glad he stuck with that because he got the job.
Three years later, Loudoun is living in NYC, in a nice apartment and teaching those who want to help the world and understand the human mind. He tells them that they never will because it’s simply not possible to completely understand every single person you meet, and it’s also not very fun either. He loves his job, and his life, but now he wants to complete it, to have the happy family like his brother William has found back home in Edinburgh – oddly enough with a girl who was in Loudoun’s old psychology class! It’s a small world, and he wants his little bit of it.
