AGE: twenty-four.
SEXUALITY: straight.
STATUS: single
GROUP: student
GRADE: junior
MAJOR: Nursing
JOB OCCUPATION: Tribeca Usher.
HAIR: Brown and long enough to run his fingers through. He usually keeps it pushed back from his face in a sort of dishevelled style; though this could be because he’s forever running his hands through it.
EYES: blue.
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: He has one on his left hand from an accident in his late teens; he was helping his dad with some DIY and there was a mishap with a blade and a cross-saw! There’s another on his shoulder from about a year ago when he needed surgery to repair a broken shoulder after a nasty snowboarding accident..
TATTOOS: He has a Celtic cross with roses wrapped around it on his right shoulder-blade in memory of his parents and “Matthew” inked on his left shoulder-blade along with a star design that Matthew picked out for him...
PIERCINGS: N/A!
PLAY-BY: Jamie Dornan!
LIKES: snowboarding, journals, rambling, skiing, Guinness, family, playing guitar, spending time with Matthew, helping others, the colour red, Nutella Bear ice cream, waistcoats, going home to Northern Ireland, rugby, weekends on the town, meat feast pizza, pasta dishes, haggis, curry and chips, dogs, playing panpipes, cinnamon lattes, snow, boat cabins, girls in plaid shirts, darts, his old leather jacket, quirky bars, the rare night off, graphic novels turned films, Mickey Mouse, daft comical jumpers, hockey, leather boots, weekends off, gardening, forests, confidence in others, being able to treat Matthew, skittles, bottled water.
DISLIKES: when his shoulder hurts, Matthew being upset, the sofa bed getting stuck, lies, deceit, missing his parents, second skin dresses on girls, assumptions, tennis, the colour orange, cold fries, double shifts, being late, getting lost, when folk don’t understand his accent, really heavy rock music, nuts of any kind, parsnips, while lilies, inconsiderate people, losing confidence, flying, dizzy spells, cold showers, falling asleep when he has a lot to do, laundry, haircuts, burritos, warm drinking water, his sophomore year professor, over sweet treats, girls instantly being turned off by his life, people who don’t put effort into their costumes.
FEARS: flying, losing Matthew, amnesia.
SECRETS: Seb put all the money left to them after their parents death into a college fund for Matthew. Money means very little to Seb and he’d rather struggle and make sacrifices than squander away the money he’s put to one side for his little brother’s future.
PERSONALITY: Seb is extremely caring which most people can guess from just asking him what his major is. He’s always put others before himself and that appears to be something that has never changed. He’s mellow and definitely not the club-goer he was a few short years ago when he moved to New York. He’s still very light-hearted though and can easily spend a number of hours playing games with Matthew. Seb can be quite the joker at times, but this can also be a coping mechanism to keep his own sorrow at bay. He thinks he has to be strong and most of the time he is, but sometimes he forgets that it is okay to lean on others or cry on someone’s shoulder every once in a while. He’s athletic even though most of his favourite sports require a weekend away from New York. In the city, he keeps active enough, using sports to clear his head of daily stresses. He can be quite confident most of the time, but a few areas of his life leave him feeling self-conscious after people teased and taunted him for them. He’s protective of the people he loves and to see them hurting really breaks his heart. He can be quite the flirt and charmer but he doesn’t prioritise romance and love anymore. With Matthew came sacrifices and that was one of them, but Seb doesn’t regret it and this side of him is one rarely seen and would probably be saved for someone very special now. He’s never been an aggressive character and even now that can still be the case, but if someone he cares about is hurt then he isn’t afraid to confront someone about it. Normally, Seb can be pretty fair and neutral if he’s not provoked into taking some course of action.
MOTHER: Andrea Jane Whelan, deceased.
FATHER: Jacob Andrew Whelan, deceased.

OTHERS: N/A
PETS: N?A
HOMETOWN: County Antrim, Northern Ireland.
HISTORY: Sebastian was born on a loud, festive eve to the young newlyweds; Jacob and Andrea. The couple had married in the summer after the discovery of the pregnancy and the relationship they had been in since they were seventeen held strong, even with the unsettled Seb who seemed to like to terrorise them from the moment he was born with wails in the middle of the night and curious adventures when their backs were turned.
His childhood was fairly average. He had friends, got into trouble and Andrea lost track of how many times her son pulled a stunt that left her with her heart in her mouth. At school he made good grades, kept a steady reputation with the teachers for being a good boy who had the tendency to joke about from time to time. It was pretty much everything you could expect from a young boy as he started to learn and grow. He took guitar lessons at school and his grandfather insisted that he learn the panpipes, just so the instrument didn’t die with him, which happened when Seb was just ten.
When Sebastian was eleven, Andrea surprised the whole family with news of a second pregnancy. It was completely unplanned, again, but Jacob couldn’t be happier that they were expanding their brood. In the past, more children had simply seemed like an impossibility with the amount of time he and his wife spent working to make sure Sebastian had a comfortable lifestyle. He was never spoilt and Seb had been raised to appreciate everything he had, but his parents still didn’t want their child to struggle. Now, their savings seemed like a good idea, especially since they were soon greeted with another son. Matthew brought confusion into Seb’s life. The older brother loved playing his role, but he couldn’t understand why everyone fussed and bothered over every little thing. Obviously, as Sebastian got older, he began to realise the reason behind the worry and the fuss and looking after Matthew was something he didn’t mind doing early in the morning before he escaped off into Belfast with his friends.
Sebastian maintained those good grades in high school and remained being the helpful soul he always had been. There wasn’t much to annoy him and as he passed through those awkward and testing teenage years, a handsome man began to emerge from the young boy from Northern Ireland. Teachers began pressuring the teenagers into making decisions about their future and Seb came up with a dream not many people really expected to hear from him. Seb wanted to be a nurse. There were quite a few friends who teased him relentlessly for it, but his family supported him and it was what Seb wanted to do. He wanted to help people, but the stresses of being a doctor seemed like too much as far as he could understand at the time. Still, he wanted to have the typical college life that people saw in movies and heard of so often. Another surprise came when he mentioned studying abroad, maybe going to see America while he attended school. Andrea would have rather kept her son closer to home, but she still wore a proud smile and Matthew cried come the day when Sebastian flew to New York for his college education at the still young age of nineteen, after a year of sorting out funding and making sure he had everything he needed when he arrived in the strange city.
His first two years passed by without a hitch and Seb lived his life armed with a fake ID. The weekends were for partying and most of those weekends involved girls, far too much beer and a monster hangover come Monday morning. Seb put the hard work in when it was needed and he kept his grades decent, but he really did live for the weekends. He ended up “out of action” for several weeks after a snowboarding accident the week before he flew home for Christmas in his sophomore year, but still claims it was totally worth it for the escape from the city for the slopes with his friends. He never let the accident put him off and he hoped to get Matthew on a board as soon as he could, which was obviously put on hold thanks to surgery and a sling.
Seb was due to return to Northern Island for a few weeks before his junior year started, but he got a phone call in the middle of the night from a doctor who shared Seb’s native accent. There had been an accident and a gas explosion at a garage on the Old Road had left both of his parents in a critical condition. They weren’t expected to survive. Matthew had been staying at a friend’s house that night, but Sebastian needed to be on the next flight back to the UK.
By the time he made it home, Andrea was already gone. The damage had been too much for her to handle and she had been crushed under debris which has caused internal bleeding, eventually leading to her death. Jacob was barely hanging on, but he spoke to Seb one final time before slipping into a coma he would never wake up from. He told Seb to be strong, to keep going and to look after Matthew, but eventually death claimed him three days later and the brothers were left alone.
Seb contacted the university and deferred his junior year until everything had settled. They buried their parents and then had to deal with everything else. Their extended family offered helping hands in every way possible, but Matthew just wanted to be with his brother and Seb was finding himself in a difficult position. He wanted to return to New York, finish up school and have a future in America, but he couldn’t drag Matthew away from their home. The little boy had lost his parents at the same age Seb had gained a brother.
The family lawyer discussed the will with Seb and it came really as no surprise that everything had been left to the two boys. Seb didn’t care for the money, though; not when Matthew had been forced to grow up and confront the stuff of nightmares when he was still a child. After Christmas, it was Matthew who asked Seb about New York. He told his older brother that he had never visited the city and that he wanted the two of them to return there so that he could see Seb’s life. There was a lot more deliberating and more trips with paperwork, but Matthew seemed certain and Seb promised that they could return to County Antrim any time they wanted to for a visit or even permanently.
Soon enough, the two boys were landing in JFK with storage cases of their things following them to the big city. Sebastian still until the fall semester before he had to re-enrol, but he took Matthew around all the tourist attractions and they set up their new home in Seb’s tiny apartment by the harbour. There was probably money in the inheritance for a larger place, but Seb didn’t see the point in wasting money that he thought ought to be kept for Matthew’s own college adventures and future. Seb had been lucky enough to have his parents around when he needed help with a cash flow problem and this was his way of making sure that Matthew was secure, too. He swapped his sofa for a sofa-bed and gave up his bedroom to his little brother, redecorating it to suit his taste and making space in the wardrobe for his clothes, whilst Seb moved most of his things to what was once the coat cupboard. It took some rearranging and there were definitely no more parties to throw from the small apartment, but Seb liked it and he had no complaints about their living arrangement. They even adopted a six month old puppy, who Matthew called Broxy. Seb wanted to make sure that Matthew was happy and safe and it seemed to be that way as the summer rolled on by and they settled into a routine.
Matthew had returned to school before the summer, but he had barely had a chance to settle, so now this was that chance and Seb was to return to the college campus to resume his studies where he had left off. He got his old job back at the Tribeca and his boss was nice enough to be flexible with his hours without cutting them down. Some months were tougher than others, but Seb refused to touch the money in the bank account for Matthew, preferring to take on extra shifts to make ends meet. The brothers seemed to have settled now and they have their moments of playful fighting and actual fallouts, but most importantly, they have each other. Seb teaches Matthew guitar, helps him with his homework and treats him as much as he can in the hopes that their life in New York will make up for everything the young boy had been put through.
