DISLIKES: Winter, being out of cell phone range, horror movies, nightmares, sleeping in, people whispering around him, blackcurrant, BBQ ribs, Christmas, feeling jumpy, liars, “I’m fine.”, kiwi fruit, grizzly bears, his dad dragging him on camping trips, blood, hospitals, pitch black darkness, sitting still for too long, bright red lipstick on women.
FEARS: The darkness when it’s pitch black and he can’t see immediately in front of him, losing his St Christopher since his nan gave it to him, respirator masks.
SECRETS: Although the attack isn’t a secret, there are parts Fionn hasn’t shared with his group or his family or police. Some things happened that the three survivors chose to keep to themselves and that included leaving Victoria to save themselves, the moment Fionn shared with Grace afterwards, as well as Fionn choosing to run away out of woods when his friends called him for help. That night was horrific and there are some things he can’t explain or will ever be able to understand.
PERSONALITY: Despite everything he’s been through, Fionn is doing a good job at coming through it all. He’s quiet which is something he never used to be, but he still talks to people and makes and effort to push himself beyond his comfort zone to make friends and socialise. He doesn’t like being cooped up indoors on his own and feels better when he’s in a crowd, or at least around other people. He feels guilt easily, which links back to his regrets about what happened in Vermont the night of the attack, but it’s stuck with him and he easily finds himself being apologetic when most people might not feel it necessary. He’s a nice guy who enjoys talking with people and getting to know them. A friendly kid who’s always considered himself to be easy to get along with. He’s smart and wants to make something of a difference in the world, though he doesn’t know how he’ll do that yet. Fionn doesn’t like to admit it, but he’s cowardly and won’t be around for a fight, ever. He’ll back down before it can even get close to that given the chance. He’s a sweet guy when he’s dating a girl and he would devote everything to her, but he’s been feeling very insecure since the attack since it made him very conscious of his character flaws and though people tell him they’d have done the same thing, or that he’s not to blame for what happened, he feels like he’s not worthy of a great girl. So he can ruin relationships he does have now, or come across as overly needy because he’s still really learning to let go of what happened and be himself again.MOTHER: Rosa Vivienne Stormaway, 47.

HISTORY: There was nothing overly special about how Rosa and Joshua met. It was a gradual build up of feelings that they eventually acted upon and a slow few years of being together before marriage and a family. Still, they were often referred to as making a cute couple, and people praised their little family and their children for having good manners and being so well behaved in public. Behind closed doors the siblings could rant and rave at each other, but in the presence of strangers they played happy families like they would get a great big prize at the end of it. Sadly, a prize never came and it took them years to realise the false bribery their parents used on them.
Fionn’s childhood was mostly without drama. He was a well liked kid, popular among his peers and respected by adults for his manners and attitude. He made good grades, played hockey, and hung out with his friends. He was on the edge of the popular crowd and he stayed there when he got older. He was a handsome kid, if a little shy back when he was a young teen, but he grew out of that and into his confidence in high school. He was the guy who got along with everyone; students, teachers, neighbours. Fionn was just that kid. He managed to steer clear of the drama, dating a nice girl called Victoria Harman from his junior year of high school. They made a cute couple, and rarely ever fought.
To celebrate their high school graduation, Fionn and a group of his friends decided that they’d go camping, but a last minute storm called it off. Instead they arranged to re-schedule it for the winter when they were all back from college. Fionn was attending NYU to study biochemistry. So, his first semester whizzed by, and he loved it, but he was psyched to come home to Newport and head off on the trip with his friends. They met up again and Liam had found them a site in the woods where there was a cabin that belonged to one of his cousins. What Liam hadn’t mentioned was that his cousin was recently estranged from his family due to reasons he didn’t even know about. His own mother had advised him not to accept the cabin offered to him, but Liam was a brash eighteen year old who wanted to hang out with his friends and carry on with the college lifestyle he was used to; away from parents, and with plenty of alcohol.
So they all drove up to the cabin, Victoria bringing her younger sister who was a high school senior. Liam’s cousin was there, which they didn’t expect, but they thought he was cool. He was in his late twenties, had no problem with them drinking, smoking and generally just having fun. The first night was fine, but the second night Cerys complained to Liam about the cousin getting a little handsy with her. When Liam tried to talk to him, all hell broke loose and he stormed off into the snow. They thought nothing of it and carried on with their party that evening, but soon he came back with a shotgun and killed Liam, shooting him in the head at point blank range. The group scattered outside, but the gun kept going off. Fionn ran with Victoria and Grace, trying to get back to the road. Grace got caught up in a trap and broke her leg, so they had to carry her, which left them vulnerable. Justin caught up to them when they were trying to find their way again. He had fallen and was limping, and it wasn’t long after that that Victoria was shot. She was alive but barely and they had to make the crippling decision to leave her behind to save themselves. Between Justin’s injury and Grace’s, they couldn’t take Victoria, too. Further down, still far from the road, a minor avalanche separated them again. Fionn was knocked out but remembered coming to and hearing his friend’s voices in the distance calling for him. He wanted to run to them, but he was too afraid and ran away – straight into the psychopathic cousin. As Fionn ran, that was when he was attacked, stabbed five times in the back and collapsed in the snow, willing death to come for him, but it never.
He woke up in the hospital, family around him, and they told him the rest. The avalanche knocked Justin closest to the road and he could see it when he came to, so he crawled down and waved for help, shouting for Grace and Fionn the whole time. Grace had been stuck, trapped completely, but once Justin flagged down a passing lorry who called for help, the driver and his companion raced to help Grace. Fionn had collapsed by that point, so finding him had been tricky, but they followed footprints and found him in time for the emergency services to help him when they arrived. Everyone else died. Cerys was killed by the cabin and Victoria hadn’t been able to hold on. The cousin had been caught deeper in the forests three days later and Liam’s family explained the story behind him. He had been a bright young man, but a psychotic break after he lost his job and his wife had seen him in hospital. His parents were in charge of his care, and when he begged to be released, his mother caved and demanded he be let home. At home he stopped taking his medication and then moved out to the cabin where no one could legally touch him until he did something to warrant it. That was why they had told Liam not to go, and he had promised he wouldn’t, but he’d lied. Now he and two others were dead, the rest injured and traumatised.
Fionn found the next few months a blur. He left college, starting again the following year, but before that he was recovering, taking therapy sessions and learning to deal with the things that had happened at the cabins. At one point he started having an unhealthy fling with Grace. It wasn’t helpful for either of them, but he needed to be with her. They were not nice to each other, unable to forget the cabin, but it was a physical connection they craved. At least until Fionn went back to college.
He went back to college, but he wasn’t the same guy. He tried to be, but it was impossible to be. He got a job in the city and let go of everything that reminded him of the cabin. He only saw Grace and Justin at the anniversary event when they were expected to be there, but the rest of the time the three of them would rarely spend time together, unable to share the memories or the guilt of what they had gone through. Two more years have gone by, and Fionn is still surviving with coping mechanisms and hard work, but he’s getting there. The nightmares are starting to fade and he’s beginning to believe that a part of him might one day be close to normal again, though another part of him will always be terrified in the snow.
