Stella had to admit that her job had perks to it, especially when they rented a gorgeous hotel by the harbor for their work parties. Work parties was the company's way of hosting parties for their employees and clients, but also using it as a tax write off. Business didn't really go down at these gatherings; it was mostly just free booze and socialization. Each employee got their own hotel room for the night so they wouldn't have to drive or walk home drunk, too. Stella actually enjoyed going to these parties. She was able to see her favorite clients and favorite coworkers outside of work. It was also an excuse to buy a new dress, which was a rare occasion for her. With her busy schedule, Stella didn't have the time to go shopping for fun. She had a full course load at school, an internship (unpaid, too!), and this job as a pharmacy rep. She didn't regret filling her schedule up so much; she was actually comforted by the hectic lifestyle. But that left Stella with little time to make friends or have a relationship. Which was why she had been seeing Xavier, a guy she had met at a bar one night and took home. They weren't a couple by any means, but they hung out, had dinner, slept together, and all of those fun things that couples did together.
And since most of her coworkers were going to be bringing their dates, Stella asked Xavier to go with her, to which he had agreed. She told him to meet her in her hotel room so that they could walk in together. With this job, it was all about appearances. They wanted their girls to look great, which meant healthy competition between the girls. Each of them wanted more clients because that meant more money, but the only way to do that was to out-look the other girls. It sounded like prostitution, but all they did was talk to surgeons (mostly men) and head doctors (also mostly men) to sell their company's drugs. The company thought having younger, good-looking women would help sell their products, which was why they had to compete so much. Stella thought that with Xavier on her arm, she would get a few more clients, and she hoped the other girls would be at least a little bit jealous of her by the end of the night.
She slipped into her dress, smoothing out the non-existent wrinkles as she looked at herself in the mirror. It amazed Stella that she looked like this now. Less than ten years ago, she had braces and glasses and extra weight on her. She had bushy eyebrows, bad style, and her hair had been an ugly shade of brown that only a mother could love. Kids had been cruel to her back then, and she had been bullied relentlessly over her looks, especially her weight. She had resorted to self-harm, which she still had the scars of to this day as a reminder of her past. As Stella had gotten older, her body had grown. She had a growth spurt, becoming a tall young woman. She had gained curves like the rest of the girls had. She learned the art of taking care of your eyebrows. She had her braces taken off, and she got contacts. She dyed her hair blonde, and she started getting into fashion more. After that, the bullying had stopped about her looks and started with her acting like a prude. So when she graduated, she left her life behind and went to the United States to get a fresh start. As she thought about the old days, she mindlessly put on her make up and did her hair.
