DISLIKES: violent video games, people questioning his motives, lectures from his parents, lies of any kind, elevators, stuffy offices, wearing a ridiculously formal outfit, travelling early in the morning, packing/unpacking, cold nights, having a cold nose, people around him being upset, feeling bored, laziness, social networking sites, overly dramatic and soppy romance movies.
FEARS: elevators, being alone, eye gauging.
SECRETS: It’s not really a secret that Sammy never went to college, but it is a secret that he turned down scholarships to Harvard, Yale and Princeton..
PERSONALITY: As far as first impressions go, Sam is a pretty laid back kind of guy. He’s also unbelievable modest and any congratulations or compliments are brushed aside with a shrug and a “no big deal” sort of remark. He doesn’t play it up, but Sammy is also highly intelligent with enough knowledge and skill to have made changes in the world if he had so felt that desire. He’s also quite a simple kind of guy. He prefers intellectual pursuits over most other things, but he’s definitely not into all the fancy technology and several upgrades a year that seems to exist today. He’s friendly and while he may come across as quiet don’t let that be a prime thought about him. Sammy is the type of guy who could have an army of friends and acquaintances; the sort of bloke that just gets along with anyone and everyone. However, his pet peeve is laziness of any kind and he will call that out in a heartbeat. He’s an intuitive kind of guy who likes to fix the problems of others if he can, so sometimes it’s necessary to tell him to back off before he shoulders someone else’s worries as though they’re just a sack of potatoes or something. He prefers a night in or a quiet drink than making a regular habit of hitting up the clubs of New York, but Sam does go out often enough to call himself sociable. He’s usually the guy to break up a fight or cool down a tense situation, but that doesn’t mean he always has a calm presence. Sam can lose his temper as well as the next person once someone starts hurting the feelings of anyone he cares about. If anyone upsets one of his friends than he can and will throw one heck of a punch. As for love, he’s probably not the most romantic of guys, but he tries. He likes to make a relationship personal. Any guy can show up with roses, but he’d prefer to find out a girl’s favourite flower first and surprise her with those instead. Just little things, not all that often, but enough to show that he’s listening. In his mind, that sort of thing is better than dinner reservations at some fancy restaurant and Tiffany boxes.

HISTORY: Ryan and Elisha were the kind of people who only wanted the best out of their lives. Ryan was an investment banker and Elisha worked in real estate and from the moment they met on a blind date both thought ridiculous, they were charmed. They paced themselves, married after a few years and then Meredith came a year after the wedding. They wanted the whole perfect, sort of Stepford, kind of life. A nice house in the suburbs, good schools picked out long before Meredith was old enough to attend and even before Sammy was considered, let alone born. They wanted to have their best, give their children the best and eventually retire the best. They had plans and ambitions and dreams that they really should not have had, but no one dared tell them that.
When Sammy did arrive in the world, his name had already been picked out. Ryan and Elisha were not all that big a pair of fans when it came to surprises. They had found out during a scan that they were having a little boy and his name, nursery and wardrobe was all selected and sorted within the month. It had been much the same with Meredith, who was almost six when her brother came into the world. Sam was a healthy little kid, who annually suffered with a nasty cough, but that was about all they ever had to worry about for their little boy.
Ryan and Elisha wanted to give their children a head start in life and brought in education toys and books and games before school so that they could have that advantage over their classmates. It didn’t take the parents long to see that their son was exceptionally gifted in the first place. He caught onto things quicker than most kids his age and when school did come around for him it wasn’t long before teachers were mentioning advanced placement and asking Ryan and Elisha to discuss their son’s progress. Sammy wasn’t the next Einstein, but he was exceptionally intelligent and picked up on things usually the first time around. His parents pushed this further by encouraging him to study more at home, research about what he was learning in class so that he may understand it better. Of course, such talents brought bullies at times. It wasn’t ‘cool’ to be smart. So, in many ways, Sammy both loved and loathed his time at school. It was fun to learn new things and get the top score on an exam, but it wasn’t so cool to be slammed into lockers or have his head flushed down the toilet.
At home, things were a little different. Ryan and Elisha had it set up for their children to do plenty of things. Elisha had soccer practice and learnt the piano while they put Sammy in baseball and violin classes. He didn’t really like either of them, but he was still at an age where he didn’t know he could say ‘no’. In the Williamson house it just wasn’t a word they were often allowed to use. He got along with his family, but they were all so busy. Meredith had her homework to do and the parents seemed to push her to be as clever as Sammy sometimes, especially if she was struggling with something that he had a loose grasp of. Their relationship changed when they grew older and started to face adulthood, but before then they were brother and sister with separate lives and very little in common. She didn’t interfere in his life, he kept out of hers and generally their conversations were short and often only took place around the kitchen table.
Everyone expected great things from Sammy. When most kinds got asked “what do you want to be when you grow up?” people seemed to approach him in a different way. He was more likely to hear “do you want to be a doctor or a lawyer when you grow up?” It seemed to be that just because he was clever and usually at the top percent of his classes that he had to go down a specific route with his future. In truth, Sammy didn’t know what he wanted to do with his future, but as he got older he realised more and more than he wasn’t going to be a doctor or a lawyer or an astronaut. He had no idea what he wanted to be or do, but he went through the motions of applying to colleges and looking at scholarships just because it was what the rest of his classmates were doing and because it was what everyone seemed to expect him to do.
It was only when his algebra teacher asked him one afternoon about his future that things began to change. The teacher noticed Sam’s falter and then when he shook his head at the usual questions of lawyer, doctor, senator…it was like the veil of illusion sort of fell away entirely. He realised that he really had no desire to go to college; at least not when he had no idea what he wanted out of his life. A long conversation with that teacher helped him out and while it was still quite terrifying to not have a plan for his life like the rest of his family seemed to have, Sammy felt like he was making the right choice. Telling his parents wasn’t easy at all, especially not when he had been accepted to every school he had applied to and received scholarships to some of the top schools, too. They tried interpreting Sammy’s news as his fear about leaving home, but he told them that it wasn’t the case at all. He just didn’t want to go down that route and be some suit wearing professional!
They didn’t understand, kept asking him what he planned on doing with his life, telling him he was wasting his potential. In the end, after graduation, Sam made the decision to move out of the family home and not long after that he left Bridgeport entirely and headed for the bright lights of New York. After living with his parents’ plans and ideals for so long, he needed time to go and find himself and discover what he really wanted out of his life. In the city he got a job waiting tables, found himself an apartment and bit by built started building some kind of semblance of a future there. Eventually he switched waiting tables for working behind the bar of his regular spot just a block over from his apartment. Sammy was happier there, knew the people well and felt like he was sort of at home with them. His parents still wish that he had gone to college and constantly ask him about those plans, but right now Sammy is happy where he is. He’s young, has been weighing up the idea of one day opening his own bar in the city, but right now he’s just enjoying his life without plans, stresses and any intimidating questions about where he’ll be in ten years.
