DISLIKES: going home, fighting with his siblings, feeling lonely, long movies, being asked for favours, cold feet, chicken, talking on the phone, cemeteries, flying, hiccups, scratched records, watching the news, talking about himself, dry burgers, staying serious, updating iTunes, being lied to, brutal honesty.
FEARS: flying, losing his family, settling down.
SECRETS: He doesn’t talk about his family to people, and often finds it easier to have casual flings and friends with benefits because of this – those types of relationships tend not to give a crap about his personal life as much as the serious ones do. Though they also tend to set people up to get hurt if they’re not aware that Silas isn’t in for anything more committed. He’s ‘accidentally cheated’ a few times because of miscommunication on that front, but it’s a complicated area to discuss.
PERSONALITY: Silas’ personality can be summed up as quite eclectic. He’s got a lot of passions that are quite odd when mixed together, a combination of light, feminine things and dark, unusual hobbies. He knits one hour and then will pin bugs the next. He’s artistic and unusual, and keeps very quiet about his existence before New York City, though his hobbies are all outlets or things that keep him connected to the few parts he doesn’t want to forget. Troubled by the things he keeps bottled inside, Silas doesn’t cope well with change or with bad news. He often goes on a bender then and goes through people like they’re disposable napkins. He doesn’t mean to, but he’s got this belief that sticking with the same people for too long will lead to them asking questions, which is why he tends to keep to reckless one night stands, flings and friends-with-benefit relationships over real attempts at romance. Friends often come and go to, since Silas lacks the effort to keep them up. He’s not aggressive, but he can be emotional, though like mentioned, he won’t talk about why he’s feeling that way. Silas is more inclined to act distant and push people away than talk to them. The only person he’ll open up to is his sister, and she’s a few hundred miles away. He’s open minded by the idea of the supernatural, and if he’s had a few drinks he’s inclined to start a conversation about that, too.MOTHER: Alexandra Freda Hook, deceased.

SIBLINGS: Monica Janice Hook, 28.
Zac Liam Hook, 25.

HISTORY: What Alexandra saw in Jack, not many people knew, but she insisted that he was the one for her. Everyone else thought him lazy and vulgar, with a temper that could border on terrifying at times. Alex always made excuses for him though and eventually she was pregnant, and there was a quick marriage at the city hall, with her sister and his best friend as their witnesses. They lived in a tiny house at the bottom of a neglected street that was on just on the edge of the good part of the town, but teetered dangerously on the cusp of the bad side at the same time. Their daughter Monica was Alex’s lifeline when Jack was being as asshole, which was most of the time. Monica grew up taking care of her parents, helping out when Alex fell pregnant for a second and third time. Silas was the third baby born, and the second son. Jack had what he wanted with Zac, who he was raising to be a tough kid. Zac often knocked Silas down when he stood up on wobbly legs and it was Monica who wiped away tears while Alex tried to scold Zac who would only laugh. Zac honestly was something of a monster and no one could make him see differently.
At school Silas kept his head down. He was a weedy kid, a target for bullies if he hadn’t had a terrifying big brother as one of the bullies and a sister who wasn’t afraid to step up and tell kids to back off. His mother was kind to him, but his father tormented him from a young age. Jack would call Silas all kinds of terrible things, but Monica would simply remind Silas that their father was their father, and they couldn’t do anything to change that. He worked away quite a bit when the children got older, having a job with a construction company that did a lot of work on the railway lines around the state. His time away from the home was peaceful for them, aside from Zac running wild without their father to stop him. Zac never listened to their mother and eventually Alexandra stopped trying.
Silas turned to art as an outlet, and it helped him keep out of the way when he was at home. He could hide out in his bedroom with a sketchbook and no one would bother him unless dinner was ready or it was bedtime. He liked it. His other stranger hobbies, like the knitting, was adopted from his mother after her untimely demise. He was fourteen at the time and Alexandra was trying to tell Zac that he couldn’t have friends over. Silas could hear the argument from his bedroom, and then there was a crash and a scream and he went down to see Monica over their mother’s body, telling him to call an ambulance. It looked like Alexandra had fallen, but they both had their suspicions that Zac had lashed out. Jack was called to the hospital and wouldn’t hear anything bad said about his darling son though, so they had to keep it to themselves though, and watch in heartbreak as their mother slowly died from brain injuries caused by her fall.
After that, Silas became stranger through his grief, and began acting differently. Monica stayed at home while she attended a local college to become a nurse. Silas found his hobbies, ignoring his father’s verbal abuse about how he was pathetic, and Silas’ reckless behaviour was local girls who he would hook up with and then toss away. Teenage girls were fragile things and they didn’t realise that he wasn’t after a girlfriend or a relationship, so he was accused of cheating a few times when he didn’t think he had done. It got confusing and dramatic and the whole thing was more than he wanted. He got his first tattoo at sixteen from a girl who was older, an apprentice at a tattoo parlour and who he had an arrangement with. After that he was hooked on the ink.
He took a few years after school to figure out what he wanted to do, a decision that was made harder when his dad suffered a major stroke and came out of the hospital needing constant care. Monica arranged to be his nurse, which shocked Silas, but she repeated the same line she had told him as a kid – “He’s our dad.” And left it at that. Silas helped out for a bit, but he didn’t feel any real love for the man and he wanted away from Montana. Zac was still around and Silas still had a lot of unresolved feelings about what had happened to Alexandra. Eventually, after commenting on how his bedroom had always been the best in the house, Silas made the choice to study Interior Design. He enjoyed decorating and he had put a lot of effort to make his bedroom a cosy retreat from everywhere else.
He was accepted on a course at NYU, packed up and moved out east. He returned home only for the holidays, but spoke to Monica often. In New York he focused on school, got a job on campus, and lived his life in the same way he had in Montana. There was a reckless string of girls who weren’t always on the same understanding as Silas about their relationship, and he threw away potential friendships out of a fear of having to talk about himself. A Junior now, he’s a year left at school before he’s out in the big, bad world, and Silas still has no intention of fighting his own lifelong demons before then. He thinks he’s fine.
