PERSONALITY: Romeo is one of the lads. He enjoys a good drink, some banter and some fooling around as much as most guys do. He’s charismatic and talkative and it’s damn near impossible to get this guy to keep quiet at times, plus he’s very loud; the kind of loud that means he often whispers louder than most people talk. He’s a joker and always telling the funny stories to cheer someone up, or just to hear them laugh. Like his name implies, he’s also very charming and romantic to the right girl. He’ll sweep her off her feet and become her very own modern day Romeo. He’s not a fighter and would rather calm a situation down with a conversation and verbal negotiation. He’s never wanted to raise a fist, but if it came down to it, he would, but only to protect someone he cares for. He’s protective sometimes, over protective, but only because he doesn’t want to see anyone get hurt. He’s got a paternal streak to him too, since he raised his sister, Ellie. When he’s stressed though, he has a tendency to gamble which is probably his biggest weakness. He can end up throwing away money that would fill his car with gas for the next week or what was supposed to be going towards Ellie’s holiday funds. He’s always been a saint. He’s never stepped out of line once at school or in his job and he’s never been able to think that he could. It’s just not in his nature to rebel to any great lengths, but small pranks and general mischief are more of Romeo’s cup of tea, it just depends on whether people appreciate them or not. Being from Liverpool, Romeo is a closet sports fan. No one would know it, but when he’s talking to his sister or someone mentions soccer (in his eyes, football) he can go off on a reel of facts and opinions about British teams.

HISTORY: Romeo was born in England, in a northern city called Liverpool. His parents were young and thought they were in love. After a rough start to their marriage, Romeo was conceived and James and Lisa thought that a child would be the perfect thing to help them settle down. At first, it went smoothly and Romeo grew into an infant before their very eyes. His dad took him to the football games at Goodison Park and Romeo was taught the rules and even owned a home kit and an away kit for the Everton football team.
When Romeo began to attend school, cracks appeared in the perfect family environment. They’d never been a rich family and only barely scraped by most of the time with bills and rent payments, but Lisa’s hours at work had been reduced, meaning that they’d be shorter on money than ever. The stress of working two jobs began to show and before long, Romeo was hiding himself in his bedroom, covering his ears and trying to block out the sounds of his parents yelling at each other.
He was seven when his mother pulled him aside with teary eyes and a smile on her face to announce that Romeo would have a brother or sister not long after his eighth birthday. It turned out that they thought another child would help them rekindle their love.
Again, for a while it worked. Lisa managed to get a job with better pay and the fighting ended. Romeo adored his baby sister, Ellie, and often helped his mother with preparing bottles, changing times and putting her to bed. As she grew, Romeo was more than happy to sit and read to her, play with her and give her the attention that an infant craves. He was never jealous of Ellie and as the pair grew, their existed no sibling rivalry, which was something family friends had always talked about with their own children.
The problems returned though and when Romeo was fourteen, he was sheltering his baby sister from the arguments of their parents. He’d take her down to the park or the shop and buy her some chocolate with the money he made on his paper route. He only wanted to keep Ellie safe and not let her hear the profanities their parents used so frequently of an evening.
School, for Romeo, was his freedom. He wasn’t one of the geeks, in fact, he hung out with some of the more popular kids, but he was always interested. He wasn’t the cleverest in almost all of his classes, but he still enjoyed it. He loved English with a passion and from his first day in high school, he knew that he wanted to me an English teacher.
Romeo was nearing the end of his fourteenth year when he came home and saw his mother, slumped at the table, pills in front of her. She hadn’t touched them, but something was wrong with her, he could see it in her eyes. He phoned for an ambulance and after psychiatric tests were ran, the family were told that Lisa had Bipolar Disorder. She was ordered to stay in hospital for a period of a month to see how her moods changed and to allow time for the medication to take effect.
During this time, longer working hours and the stress of the housework and chores took its toll on James, who began drinking heavily. Romeo kept Ellie out of his way during these times, but it was something that didn’t stop, even when Lisa returned to the small council house they lived in.
For a fresh start, the family sold everything they had and moved to New York. James had a job offer out there working with a small company as a social researcher. The pay wasn’t much, but it was a fresh start and with one more determined push, the parents thought that this would be the key to solving everything.
The move happened, Lisa got a job in a diner and Romeo and Ellie were enrolled in school out there, but their thick accents made it a little harder for friends to understand them.
Romeo was sixteen when his mother was working late one night. Ellie was doing her homework in the kitchen and James was making his way through a bottle of Jack Daniels at an impressive rate. Ellie knocked over her glass of juice and it smashed on the floor, causing James to fly into a fury, rushing into the kitchen and screaming all kinds of terrible things at his daughter. Romeo ran in immediately behind him and as James raised a hand to hit Ellie, Romeo jumped in the way, taking the blow himself before punching James back, grabbing Ellie and running out of the house to wait for their mother to return home.
When Lisa heard what had happened, she freaked out. Taking both of her children to a friend’s house she returned to confront James who lashed out once more. What followed was a long court case which resulted in James being sentenced for three years in prison and Lisa gaining full custody of the children.
Romeo enrolled at university when he was eighteen and began studying English Literature there, still determined to become a high school English teacher one day. He took a job at Borders, just as a general assistant to help pay tuition and fund living costs. The years there past by without many hiccups and Romeo was ready to graduate when his mother phoned him with serious news. Her bipolar has worsened and James was also looking to find Ellie, claiming that he had a right to see her. Lisa wanted to permanently hand over custody of Ellie to Romeo, making him her legal guardian. She said that he was the only one in the family who had ever truly looked after Ellie to the extent that she deserved.
It was a long process but almost at the same time that Romeo received his degree, he found himself sharing a small apartment with his baby sister. His dreams of returning to school to pursue a teaching qualification were put on hold as Ellie came first. Romeo got promoted to supervisor at Borders, meaning that there was more money coming in to support them.
It was a tough change for them both, but both siblings had always been close enough for this to work. Another two years passed by and Ellie turned sixteen.
It was during this time that Romeo met a small country girl called Zoe. The pair bumped into each other on more than one occasion and every time, they would sit and chat for a while. Romeo hadn’t realised it just yet, but he was certainly starting to fall for the “country doll”.
Romeo continues to work at Borders, but spends three nights a week preparing to return to university by partaking in evening classes. He thinks Ellie is old enough now for him to balance out his responsibility and his dreams, however, when the stress creeps up on him, Romeo turns to the slots and that’s when the trouble begins...
