DISLIKES: Monday mornings, talking about college, going home now, DC vs Marvel arguments, losing his temper, reminiscing (the past is the past), neon colours, dubstep, cell phone alarms, AI, relying on technology for everything, Starbucks orders taking forever, paperwork, being told to watch his mouth, the colour yellow.
FEARS: Police, the people he loves hating him, going back to school.
SECRETS: He tells people he dropped out of college, but the truth is he was expelled. Also, while he had a bit of a bad boy rep in high school, no one ever knew that he had been arrested for stealing once from a store in the city when he was fifteen.
PERSONALITY: Despite being young (and everything else) Raffe is an excellent cook, whose talents could have been inherited from his father and grandmother, or maybe he developed them on his own, who knows. Either way, he’s intensely proud of them. He’s independent, always has been, and many might say that this has contributed in part to his bad boy vibe and the few rebellious moments that have been seen throughout his life. Rafael is well mannered and his family raised him well, but he’s not without faults and being easily stressed and having a short fuse can be listed among those things. He’s not a lover of sports, but he’s athletic himself, purely because he likes keeping in shape and working out; it allows him to blow off steam without taking any frustrations out on the people he cares about. However, when he does explode, he’s like a bomb and nothing stops him until it’s entirely out of his system which is why Rafael sometimes prefers to be in his own company when he’s had a bad day. He’s a man who prefers a few good friends over many, and often keeps to a corner when he attends parties because he’s not one to refuse an invitation to one. Don’t misunderstand him, he likes to mingle, he’s just not the centre of attention type. He’s a cheeky type of guy who likes a challenge and is always up for dares – often how he ends up in trouble as his past can indicate. Rafael is a flirt often without trying to be and isn’t really the kind you’d expect to see settling down with one person. It’s not that he sleeps around or anything, it’s just that vibe he gives off. He can talk the talk and people tend to make assumptions from that. In his mind, the people who matter know the truth about him.MOTHER: Marianne Selene Echeverría, 53.

HISTORY: Jerico met Marianne when she was on vacation. He had lived there all of his life, still lived with his mother who ran a small local café and he cooked with her, the family recipes that had been popular for years. Marianne was a business graduate who had been travelling for a gap year after finishing up college. She was wrapping up the end of her trip in Mexico when she met Jerico. The pair will tell all who ask of love at first sight, and when it came time to leave, she didn’t want to. Jerico didn’t want her to leave either and asked her to marry him. They lived for fourteen years in Mexico City before moving to Tucson, Arizona when Marianne’s father took sick. The three children, Elias, Eva and Rafael had been countless time for vacations and holidays, but it was still strange to call it their home now. Rafael was only five at the time and it was terrifying at first.
Jerico took a loan from the bank with Marianne’s help and together they opened a Mexican restaurant in the city. It took a short while for business to take off, but it did. It was authentic cuisine and couldn’t be faulted. He passed on the skills to his children when they were old enough to learn and they could work in the restaurant when they were teenagers if they wanted the work. Jerico never forced them to, but he also wanted it to be a family business, since it was the family name over the door. It was his lifelong dream and it had finally come true.
Growing up, Rafael was a bit of a tyke. He was the scamp when he was younger and then a bit more of a troublemaker as he got older. It was never really anything too serious at first. His parents understood that he had a short fuse and they tried to help him deal with that, but sometimes there would be a kid shoved in the school yard, or a bit of a scrap in the street outside their house. They knew not everything could be avoided, but they wanted Raffe to try his best and he did, it was just that sometimes it happened a little too quickly. Elias was the one who thought running or weights might help burn off some of that frustration, so he was introduced to the world of working out sooner rather than later. It didn’t all end there though. Because of his rep as a bit of a scrapper and a loose cannon, Raffe fell in with a bad crowd of kids in the area. They just used to hang around and be a nuisance and usually got moved on when a patrol car cruised by. One night they were goofing around daring each other to do crazy things and Raffe was dared to steal some stuff from the late night drug store. He went on over, shoved some things into his bag when he thought no one was looking, but someone was and he got caught for it. His friends bailed when they realised and police came to cart him away. The store were going ahead with the prosecution and Raffe was in some mighty hot water that saw his summer reduced to nothing but video games in his bedroom, but thankfully the judge let him off with a warning. Still, there was a mark against his name and a juvenile record that he could do nothing about until he was twenty.
His sophomore year started up then and he had a bit of a reputation as a bad boy. No one really knew what he had done, since he and his family had worked hard to keep it quiet. When Raffe kept his head down it was deemed mysterious or dangerous by other kids and there was a whole world of remarks made in passing when he avoided people now. It was this year that he started dating Remington. How that happened felt like a bit of a blur, but it was something she had said by the lockers and he had retorted back with a challenging remark. He couldn’t get his kicks with daring stunts that might land him in official trouble now, but he could get some thrill from her it seemed. He knew she had a rep of her own then, but he wasn’t looking for the kind of love story his parents spoke of, just something to drive the boredom away – at least that was how it had started. And before Remi, Raffe had only really fooled about with some girls he knew from another school and it wasn’t really all that exciting like people made the teenage years out to be. Of course, he never expected their first date to be as covert ops as it turned out to be. He was also surprised when they lasted the rest of high school. Remi turned out to be good for him – or at least that was what his family said – but he just liked her; he never thought too deeply about it.
After they ended things and went off to college, Raffe ended up studying culinary arts at a school in California. LA to be precise. He had a blast out there for the first two years. He fooled around with the college girls, partied hard and just lived the college dream. Although his professors didn’t like him questioning them or commenting on other things. They didn’t seem to like the advice from a kid who had grown up in a top restaurant and knew the tricks of the trade like the back of his hand. The night that all went to hell, Raffe doesn’t remember much. He knows there was a party on campus and he knows that another kid threw the first punch. However, he was the one who security pulled out of the fight without barely a scratch on him whereas the other guy was bloody and blue. His old juvie records weren’t yet sealed, and the school authorities had access to them when he applied. They found it all perfect reasoning to expel him and his appeal was rejected immediately. They turned his class questioning into ‘backchat and little respect for authority’ and said the fight was the last straw. The other kid even admitted to starting the fight, didn’t want to cause a fuss, but none of it mattered. Raffe was sent back to Arizona with no way of explaining it to his family without devastating them.
So he lied. Told them he left of his own accord and that it wasn’t for him. He worked on getting that damn juvie record sealed and took on some hours in the restaurant. He thought about Remi in New York and wondered how she was doing. Her dad still came in to their place and he couldn’t ask to bar him without revealing Remi’s big secret. It was frustrating and only made him realise how much he needed to get away from Tucson again. He was walking home late at night when he spotted the food truck outside one of the big night clubs. It spurred an idea and he took it to his dad and brother. They had been trying to think of ways to expand the business, but didn’t want to just plonk another Echeverría’s in the city. He proposed a food truck, where they could serve their food but anywhere they wanted. He then also suggested they start it up with a small crew in New York City. And then he volunteered to go and head the operation. Elias was wary at first and Jerico just sort of blinked, but they warmed to the idea with both of them warning to the idea over a bit of time.
Before long, there was a truck decorated up and permits and licences dealt with, and two other willing members of the Echeverría’s team who were willing to relocate to New York City with Raffe. Rafael knew that they were chosen to keep an eye on him and report back to his family, but he could live with that. He saw this as his own thing, and a way to reconnect with Remi, though he didn’t tell her he was coming to the city. He would find a way to sort that out after he was there. They flew to the city to settle themselves in first and then flew back to Arizona to pick up the truck, driving it to NYC for the start of what he hoped would be a better chapter in his life, and one that might see him reunited with a true friend!
