PERSONALITY: Cedric is, on the surface, a very quiet man. He’s well educated and exceedingly cultured, but not the sort who would call himself outgoing. He’s a bumbling bloke who only really teaches at the university because he doesn’t have the confidence to handle high school students; at least at college level the students want to learn what he’s talking about. There are times when he can be a little bit forgetful, but this is usually when he’s totally absorbed in his work and lost in what he’s doing, but the man is too passionate about history to really be considered a workaholic; he prefers to think of his research papers, and time spent in the city archives as hobbies. A traditional bloke, Cedric is very much old fashioned in both is style and his manners, which can lead to people mocking him, or finding him adorable (usually the case of older women), but he won’t change. He’s got nothing by the way of a temper, and avoids confrontation at all costs. He’s actually a bit of a pushover at times, and often ends up lumbered doing more work for the department than he ought to, but he’s not one to complain or make a fuss. He’d just rather get on with it. He’s totally hapless when it comes to romance and love, and has never in his life managed to land himself a date. He’s been asked, but never realised the romantic attachment of what he was being asked, and so it’s never turned out quite like it ought to. He’s also a totally mess around women he likes and usually makes a total idiot of himself. He’s clueless and a bit of a sap so he tends to avoids it as best as he can. It’s not because he wants to, but rather because he doesn’t think he’ll ever get it right.MOTHER: Lucy Jane Critchley, 62.

HISTORY: Lucy and Zachariah met at a book discussion evening with the author of a book they had both enjoyed. They grabbed coffee afterwards and soon started dating. However, it took Zachariah six years before he put a ring on Lucy’s finger, always focussed on furthering his career and having some stability before he promised her a future. It was another three before they were married and living in a small cottage by the river. Another year went by before they spoke of children, and firmly decided that they could be content with just one child. One baby would mean they could have a family and still focus on their own goals and dreams without being neglectful parents. Yes, everything they did was meticulously thought through and planned before they went ahead with it. They even had the name of their son chosen long before he was conceived. By the time he was born there was quite literally no room for surprises.
Cedric was raised in a firm but loving household. There was no room for unruly behaviour, no time for tantrums. He was expected to be the best he could be, and raised with manners and a delicacy that was already going out of style. When other local boys climbed trees and played Pooh Sticks in the river, Cedric was learning about the flowers and the fruits of the local park with his father, who was teaching botany at the university. Lucy worked in a restaurant, usually working the lunch rush so she was home to help Cedric with his homework. He never took up sports or after school clubs; his parents believed he could be better at home pursuing hobbies there. With them he saw museums around the world and developed a love for both history and gardening, the latter obviously coming from his father.
Cedric was always sort of an outcast. He didn’t have many friends and mostly kept to himself. He preferred it that way and it wasn’t entirely fun being a target for the bullies just because he dressed differently to them or spoke differently. Thankfully, keeping his head down kept him out of trouble often enough, and he was in the higher level classes at school where there weren’t quite as many kids who wanted to give him a hard time about things.
For the most part his life was fine. It was nothing overly exciting and nothing grand, but Cedric was content. He travelled with his parents every summer and he was the son they had always dreamt of. There were no rough rebellious years for him, and all he ever wanted was a discussion over dinner about something he had read in one of his books or heard about on the television. They were a slightly odd, but very happy family who only wanted the best for their future. Cedric attended the sixth form attached to his high school and then attended university in Exeter, explaining to his parents that while he had the grades for Oxford or Cambridge, he wanted to get away and try something new, just to see what it was like. They couldn’t fault him and had to agree that Exeter did run a magnificent history course that he would love.
University failed to change Cedric. He remained the awkward, clever man he had always been. After graduating he went back to obtain his Masters and PhD before deciding that he wanted to see a bit more of the world. It was through that choice and through a research post he landed at NYU during his second year of researching history in New York City that he ended up being offered a teaching position at the university. It was a surprise, but something he eagerly accepted and spent the rest of the time preparing for, keen to take on his classes in the following fall semester.
It’s been a year now and Cedric is still a little bit of an outsider at the school, but he’s getting there. He’s young and a bit forgetful at times, but he knows his stuff, and there’s no faulting him when it comes to his classes. He speaks with passion and a flair that’s been lost over the years. His superiors just wonder if he’s got what it takes to have a life beyond the past.
