AGE: Twenty.
GENDER: Female.
SEXUALITY: Bisexual.
STATUS: Single.
GROUP: Student.
GRADE: Sophomore.
MAJOR: Creative Writing.
JOB OCCUPATION: Barnes & Noble Assistant.HAIR: Long, very dark brown that it's almost black. Briar doesn't really do too much with it since she doesn't really know what to do with it. She wasn't exactly raised to focus on her appearance 24/7 and now if it's not just left down and natural it's only pulled back into a braid.
EYES: Blue.
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: She has a scar running up the inside of her right calf and then continues on the inside of her right forearm. It's from playing with the dogs when she was a little younger; one of them had “deadly claws”.
TATTOOS: None.
PIERCINGS: Ears the one and her right lobe a second time, too.
PLAY-BY: Kaya Scodelario!LIKES: video games, Gothic horror, gory movies, writing, big headphones, loud music, her solitude, dancing, the rain, Wes Craven, sambuca, thistles, reading, concerts, New York, Japanese things, eyeliner, scalding hot bubble baths, feeling comfortable, pyjamas, lazy days, sleeping to music, vanilla coke, mythology, superstitions, herbal teas, lucky charms and pendants, caramel, ice cream sundaes, heights, sci-fi, notebooks.
DISLIKES: bullies, loneliness, pigeons, animal cruelty, having to wait, feeling stuck, roast dinners, social networking sites, early mornings, wolves, remakes, most movie adaptations, writer's block, nuts, strawberry milkshake, gold, crying easily, damaged books, sharing her work with others, not being able to write when inspiration hits, feeling sick, anxiety, insomnia, missing her family, telling lies, dead plants, hospitals, levels of authority, brain freeze, toothache, when good TV shows end, losing her temper, complicated girl things, cramping legs.
FEARS: pigeons, failing at writing, claustrophobia.
SECRETS: She's lost track of how many lies she's told over the years. They just seem to drip from her lips before she can stop them, but she hates doing it. Briar uses them as a sort of defence mechanism, but she wishes she could stop and do something else.
PERSONALITY: Briar has quite the dark sense of humour that sometimes suggests that she has a twisted imagination, which is true. She's very creative and spends more time in her daydreams than anywhere else. Around strangers and in uncomfortable situations she's quiet and keeps to herself, scared of making mistakes or upsetting anyone. She may not always appear so obvious, but she's very downcast a lot of the time, feeling lost in the world and in herself. Briar is quite sensitive and can easily cry when she's upset or even angry. She tries to bottle everything up but it just leads to a very quick explosion of temper when she usually hurts herself more than the person she's angry at! She's quite the loner, but this isn't entirely by choice, although she does enjoy her alone time. In truth, she's never really had any friends, leaving her slightly distrusting and paranoid when people do go out of their way to befriend her. Briar is lonely, even around those close to her. It's this loneliness that sometimes pushes her to lying and making up stories to try and gain some sense of acceptance with those around her; something she's never had. She feels like there is something missing in her life, but she's too scared to go chasing it on her own. Superstitious, like the rest of her family, Briar is often ridiculed for her beliefs or passions which is why she's reluctant to let anyone see her work, pessimistic that they'll hate it and say it's no good. When writing is all she has, she's terrified of who she might be without it. She's not one for confrontations, although she wishes she could be. When she's in a bad mood she will speak out impulsively and behave recklessly by doing things she will regret and wouldn't normally do sober. In many ways, she's broken and a mess. Romance has dabbled in her life, but Briar lacks the confidence to let anything come from it, although she does secretly dream of a happy ending with someone who does love her for who she is. However, she's convinced that no one ever will if she's totally honest with them. She's scared that they'll find her too creepy or weird.

HISTORY: Iris and Damon had met when their parents had introduced them. Their marriage was by no means arranged, but their mothers did hope that something good would come from their children befriending each other. They were overjoyed when something eventually did. Married at nineteen, it wasn't too long before Iris fell pregnant with their first child! Two daughters followed their son and they lived a happy life in a small home on the outskirts of the town. Everything was great, but when Damon's brother moved to America and sent mail and phone calls home it became a dream for Damon to take his family out there, too. They planned the move, prepared everything and then, thirteen years after Danika had been born, their whole trip was halted; Iris was pregnant again. They saw it as a sign, a blessing and it was two years after Briar's birth when they finally moved as a family. They were a close group so they either all went or none of them, which was why Jared and Nora both made the move too, despite being old enough to live their own lives.
They moved to a very simple, almost rustic home on the outskirts of Marienville, Pennsylvania. The house came with just enough room for the family and with a small bit of land for the dogs and the car and other things to be placed out there. They were a simple family who were happy to make do with what they had, using a tree stump as a table top out there, or hanging hammocks in the summer instead of paying out for chaise loungers. If anyone were to pass by from a distance then they'd probably think the house abandoned, since it was away from the rest of the town and almost hidden in the surrounding forests. As Briar grew up other kids would tell her that her house scared them and reminded them of horror movies.
Briar didn't have the greatest of childhoods. Her siblings were all much older than her so never really around to play. Out of the three of them, she preferred Jared. He took the time in the evenings to tell her stories or play silly games while Iris prepared the dinner for the family. Her two sisters rarely had the time of day for her, caught up in their own lives. But her brother would always spend at least fifteen minutes playing with the dolls, or brushing her hair or running about with some silly imaginary game that left Briar squealing with laughter by the end of it. Sadly, he moved out when she was just five after the birth of his own son. Still, he came over often and took Briar out to places when she was growing up. He was probably the closest thing she ever had to a true friend; a depressing thought in retrospect.
When school rolled around, Briar was almost instantly outcasted by her classmates. She was weird, dressed weird and smelt like the herbs her mother had drying around the house. They were a superstitious family, almost outdated in some ways, but they were happy and it was the life Briar knew. Her classmates were less understanding though and she was the kid who sat on her own at lunch from day one, subjected to torment and bullying from the same day. It didn't take long before her classmates started pulling faces about her house, realising that she got off the school bus and then had to walk in a totally opposite direction to get home at the end of the school day. Eventually, Jared and Damon would pick her up when they could but their jobs and commitments didn't always make this possible for the young girl.
As she got older, a small group sort of adopted her, but even then she felt left out and on the edge. They would go out on weekends without her and when she asked they would say that they didn't think she was interested, or that it cost a lot of money. It was like they only kept her around to make fun of her or to have as a sort of pet they could poke and prod at whenever they felt like it. Briar didn't have anyone to come and rescue her or anyone to even help her through school and the rest of the troubles. All she had was her imagination, a pen, and a notebook. It was all she needed to combat her nightmare of a social life. It was something that took a worse turn in high school.
In high school she was very much a plain jane. She didn't wear make up or designer clothes and she did her best to blend in with the lockers when she could. Nothing really changed at first; she was still bullied, used and laughed at. Then, when she was fifteen, one of the girls who called herself a “friend” invited Briar to one of her sleepovers. There were a few of them there, laughing and joking and playing silly games like truth or dare. During the night, Briar was dared to kiss another girl and then the jokes began about how willingly she had done that and what it meant. By Monday it was all around the school, twisted and manipulated into a rumour almost the opposite of the truth. It was then that her “friends” showed their true colours.
Briar was seventeen when things changed slightly for her. On her own again, three new kids joined the school that year. The three of them sort of shaped her life. The first was unnervingly friendly to her; a nice guy who didn't seem to fit in either, but was friendly to everyone. The second was a girl who Briar briefly dated in secret and who helped confirm that Briar was in fact bisexual. She might even go as far to say she loved that girl, but a year later and that girl was dating the guy from the football team having “grown out of her phase” as she told Briar. The final was another boy, one with a bit of a bad boy attitude but who claimed Briar's heart in the lead up to prom. He then broke it by moving away and refusing to keep in touch with Briar. However, the three of them gave Briar her first glimpse of hope, even if two managed to snatch it away again. It might seem irrelevant to most people, but Briar considers it the most important year of her life.
In her senior year Briar tried in vain to turn her life around. She could lie so easily, thanks to a bizarre “family trick” as her mother called it whenever she phoned the school to give Bri a “sick day” so she could hang about the woods instead. Countless rumours circulated about her life. They ranged from horror movie level to personal, intimate details and at least 85% of them were false. However, Briar longed to have a real friend; someone she could completely trust. In her attempt to achieve this the lies began rolling off her tongue as she tried to impress her classmates. It never worked to the way she wanted it, but there were plenty of rumours quickly silenced because Briar had told a lie to “explain” it. It wasn't something she was proud of doing but more often than not the lies were said before she could even stop herself or think about it.
In the end, a fresh start and the prospect of college was what she needed. Briar was only leaving her family behind really and they would always welcome her home. Her dad had been sick with numerous health issues over the last two years, so giving him a break from driving about or helping her with school might be good for him. Plus, her parents were older than most of her classmates' had been; something the bullies liked to remind her of. She chose to study in New York. It was far enough away that she could close the book on her past and yet close enough to home that she could return for weekends or whenever she was needed there.
Her freshman year flew by, but not in a great way. She had an apartment and had her three dogs for company, but she was overwhelmed by university. It wasn't something she was prepared for and her Creative Writing course demanded a confidence from her that she had never had. Even her job putting books on shelves left her feeling drained and uncomfortable most of the time. New York was magical, the stuff of dreams, but she was so petrified of losing what little she had that she hardly branched out at all. Still pretty much on her own, Briar is preparing for her sophomore year with nervous anxiety and a hope that something good comes her way soon. It's about time she deserved it.
