PATCH AARON FIELDING

NICKNAMES: Patch (no one ever calls him Patrick).
AGE: twenty.
SEXUALITY: straight.
STATUS: single
GROUP: student
GRADE: sophomore
MAJOR: Computer Science
JOB OCCUPATION: Stagehand at Apollo.
HAIR: Overgrown and brown. Even when it’s short it’s still on the longer side. Usually left to do what it likes or crammed under a hat, Patch only ever gets it cut when his grandma tells him to do it.
EYES: brown.
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: He has one on his forehead from childhood. There was a building collapse when he was ten and Patch was trapped inside. That scar is the only visual reminder of it.
TATTOOS: XII on his left wrist for his mom & grandma’s birthdays. His mom was April 12th and his grandma July 12th.
PIERCINGS: None.
PLAY-BY: Tyler Blackburn!
LIKES: hats, computer programming, being outdoors, fresh lemonade, camping, playing handyman, barbecues, hot summers, hiking, cooking, the odd beer or two, heading back to his grandma’s, graphic design, filming silly moments, peppermint, software development, girls in his hoodies, comfy old jeans, country music, Cajun soup, The Lion King.
DISLIKES: crime shows, when his car is freezing cold, his grandma being sick, mindless gossip, rats, the colour yellow, hailstorms, flying, passing out in the library, break-ups, liars, itchy clothing, reality television shows, celebrities who aren’t celebrities, blueberries, cucumber, weak coffee, Mufasa’s death, girls who overdo the make-up and/or the “bling”.
FEARS: rats, claustrophobia, flying
SECRETS: When he first came to NYC, he didn’t actually have a place to live. He spent a good part of the first six months either passing out in the campus library or living out of his car. He’s never told anyone because he didn’t want his family to worry and he didn’t exactly want to let people see just how broke he had been at the time.
PERSONALITY: Patch is a humble kind of guy with good intentions. He’s selfless and will always put others before himself, even if he comes out at the bottom of the heap and fighting to make ends meet. A trusting friend, he’s the first to offer his help while trying to keep his nose out of business that isn’t his own; he’ll only pry if he’s seriously worried that someone he cares about is in trouble. Patch can be a little forgetful at times, but he doesn’t do it intentionally and usually always tries to find a way to make it up to someone if it’s something important that he’s missed. Light-hearted, he’s the guy to come up with creative ways of having fun and putting a smile on someone else’s face. He’s not one for buying into cheap rumours or gossip, even if everyone around him is saying it. He’d rather trust his gut and ask someone outright than believe half of the whispers. He’s helpful, be it repairing a laptop for a friend or helping them put a shelving unit together. Patch is a family man who has a very close relationship with his family and will drop everything to go and help them out. He does set himself up to be used as a doormat, but Patch is also good at guilt-tripping anyone who does that before severing all ties with the person. He’s the guy who will walk away and pull his friends away from any and all confrontations. He doesn’t have it in him to be violent or really aggressive. The most he’ll do is publically call someone out if they really cross a line and hurt someone he’s closest to. He’s only ever done that one or twice though, so it takes a lot to tip him. A sweet guy, Patch oddly doesn’t date very much. He’s the college kid who makes sure the drunk girls get home without hassle and who would rather hold someone’s hand than jump them. Not a romantic, but rather chivalrous, Patch would rather find a girl and get to know her before embarking on a relationship with them.

HISTORY: Patch was born Patrick, and was the first and only child of Leyton and Evelyn Fielding. Leyton had come to New York during his teenage years from London, England and had met the lovely Evelyn during his time at college. Both of them attended Brown University and graduated into very good jobs. They settled in Evelyn’s hometown of Silver Creek where her mother lived after her father’s death. Soon after, they married and shortly after that came the pitter-patter of tiny feet and a pair of wide brown eyes that captured both of their hearts. With Evelyn and Leyton both busy in their respective professional lives, Patch spent a lot of time in the care of Lily; his grandmother. He would be dropped off there early in the morning and collected around his bedtime, meaning for most of his infanthood, he only really saw fleeting glimpses of his parents unless it was a family vacation or the holiday season. They both showered him with love and affection though, explaining that they worked hard to keep him safe and happy.
He had no disdain for his parents and he loved spending time with his grandma. He adored helping her out around the house, trying to be the man when he was just a little boy with hair falling into his eyes and sticky treats lingering on his fingers. Patch was a happy little boy, earning his nickname earlier than his memories could recall. After that he was almost always called Patch, and scowled whenever the teachers at school called him Patrick. Soon enough they used his nickname, too, unless he had managed to get himself into trouble for chatting or passing notes. He was never a troublemaker, but like most kids he found himself getting told off for the little things from time to time.
Patch’s love for computers came when he was still pretty young. His parents had a desktop in the study of their house and he was allowed to play games on it during the weekends for an hour after dinner, when it was too dark to play in the street or the garden. He was always disappointed when his hour was up, threw a tantrum once or twice, but it was the start of his love for the technology. Growing up as part of a generation that seemed to fawn over every technological improvement and gadget, his love eventually changed from playing the games to the more complicated inner workings of the systems and the software.
For the most part, his life was pretty uneventful. The most dramatic thing that ever happened to him happened when he was ten years old. The school he attended was due to be rebuilt over the summer since the structure was pretty old and the whole site was getting close to its death date. With a hot summer already upon them and the final days of school in progress, Patch had stayed late for one of the after school science clubs that they ran for the students. No one quite knew what happened to suddenly cause the collapse, but the area of the school where the club was became buried under concrete and rubble when the roof and the offices above collapsed. Patch, the two teachers and six other children of his age were trapped inside with varying injuries. None of them were fatally hurt, but it was still a terrifying ordeal that lasted several hours before the emergency services were able to reach them. Patch had a broken arm and a few cuts and bruises that kept him uncomfortable for a time, one cut leaving a pretty noticeable scar on his forehead. This was also where his claustrophobia stemmed from.
With the exception of that dramatic twist in his life, things were pretty average. He tried a few sports, but never felt a strong love for them or had the natural talent to really stick with them. Patch still spent most of his time at his grandma’s house and as he grew taller he wanted to do more to help her, even if it was just changing a lightbulb or moving some things to the garage out of her way. She fell pretty sick when he was fifteen and Patch stayed with her completely. He didn’t go home to his parent’s house and then called in after work to make sure that he was doing okay. For the few months it took for the older woman to recover from a very nasty lung infection, Patch did everything around the house from the chores, to the cooking and the cleaning. He didn’t mind it either; he was just happy that his grandma was getting better.
In high school, there were no exciting adventures. He was somewhere in the middle with his classmates and drifted off in class from time to time. Patch was pretty much an average student with a few good friends and a love for dabbling with computers whenever he could. He had a part time job flipping burgers for a few years to earn himself some money and mostly stayed with his grandma to help her out and keep an eye on her. Ever since she had been sick, he was worried that something would happen when no one was around to help her. His parents didn’t mind, and they regularly called in since they only lived a few streets over. In a way, with Leyton frequently travelling as part of a promotion he earned, it was useful to have him stay with Lily. It meant there was no risk of him being home along and getting into too much trouble, although Patch wasn’t that kind of kid.
He had known since he was a little boy that he wanted to work with computers, and after a career day pointed him in the right direction, he paid attention in the classes that mattered, rather than allowing his pen to doodle across the page or his mind to wander into some fantasy kingdom. Eventually, it paid off and he had earned himself a spot at NYU! His parents offered to pay for his tuition and put him up in some nice apartment, but budget cuts at Evelyn’s office meant that her income was lower than it had been for many years and Patch being Patch was adamant on using his own savings to find someplace to live, although his parents insisted on paying his tuition. Lily gave him some money, too, before he left for college and when he tried to hand it back she told him that he could look at it from the point of view that it was all the money she would’ve paid handymen and carers when she had needed them. Patch had done more running around for her than he realised, but the old woman was extremely proud of her grandson.
When he arrived in NYC he had sort of judged his money situation incorrectly. He had left apartment hunting a little late and most of the student places had been snatched up, including most of the dorm rooms at the university. He was able to afford a tiny, disgusting apartment, but catching a glimpse of the neighbours and the mark on the door from the police smashing the lock, he thought better of it. He managed to find a job though! He took a position as a stagehand at the Apollo and saved his wages up. Freshman year began and if he wasn’t passing out in the library, he was camping out of his car. It wasn’t exactly living comfortably and he had a tough time deterring his family from visiting. Most of the time he had to make hasty trips out to Silver Creek to surprise them long enough to keep them out of the city! It was just after the holidays when he found a place he could afford to rent and that wasn’t a complete dump. He got the key to a modest little place above a quaint little bistro bar. It wasn’t open late into the night and the noise barely bothered him.
He settled in there and was thankful that he hadn’t ended up in some hole in a rough area of the city. Once settled, he could focus better on his computer science course, which meant a great deal to him. He wanted to do well, to graduate and make his family proud. He took freshman year in its stride and made friends, broke a few harmless rules and had fun. He’s still young and there’s still so much he wants to see and do before it’s too late to chase those dreams.
