PERSONALITY: Toby had an adventurous childhood, running up and down the block of his neighbourhood, pretending he was being chased by a spy along with the other kids. That spirit of adventure never left Toby as he grew up but he chose other options to explore. He’s a charming man with a ridiculously cute grin when he chooses to show it. He can be a serious man but only when he wants to be, or needs to be. Toby would much rather have some fun, play a few pranks and be the court jester than to be that serious guy he has to be. He’s sweet, loyal and caring. He’ll do anything for his friends, especially to make them smile on a bad day. He’s inquisitive by nature, stubborn when he has something in mind and relentless when he’s finding the facts to a story. Finding his interest in journalism, it became aware to him that he was particularly good at reading people. How they acted, reacted when he asked a question told him a lot more than their answer did. It makes him good at what he wants to do with his life. Toby is athletic, choosing a gym over the park for focus. His current job has him playing a flirtatious bartender. It helps that he’s a friendly sort of guy and enjoys his job and the people he works with.

HISTORY: Steven and Cadence hated each other all through their lives. From childhood to adulthood, the pair never got along. There were fights, yelling matches, she threw a few punches in his directions, and he tossed remarkably crude insults. Steven stayed in LA for a year after his graduation, picking up decent work as a graphic designer. Cadence didn’t stick around New York much longer than she needed to after graduating. She’d gone so far away from home solely to be as far away from Steven as she could get. She moved back to San Francisco as soon as her things were packed up. She could start up a fashion line anywhere; she didn’t have to be in the East Coast’s version of Milan. They didn’t run in the same circles after that, not that they knew. Then one night, there was a party and both were invited by friends of friends. And this is where Toby’s story really begins.
Cadence wasn’t going by her full name anymore, like before. She preferred Cady, and Steven started going by his middle name; which Cadence had never learned. One thing led to another that night and the pair got along so well, not recognising the other. It was a few before they really realised the truth. But by then, they had fallen hard for each other and chose to accept that they were idiots growing up and laugh about it. Only a few months later, they were exchanging vows and walking down an aisle to the cheers of their friends and family while flower petals were tossed around happily. It was another couple years before Cadence told Steven of her pregnancy and father was overjoyed with the news. But complications arose throughout and the doctors weren’t sure if mother or child would pull through. It was hard to deal with, but they did and though it was touch and go, Toby was born nearly two months early but only about a pound underweight; which was very good news. Cadence had more troubles afterwards, but the doctors managed to stop the bleeding, help her and she recovered in time to have her son released. That was two months after his birth.
Though born premature, looking at him wouldn’t show that growing up. He was inquisitive as a child, digging through everything to get answers he wanted, jumping out of trees just to see if he could fly. He broke his arm at eight for that very reason. And when he was ten, they family went on a surprise Christmas vacation in Washington. The icy lake looked thick enough to walk on and the family dog, Jackson; a golden retriever was out on it perfectly fine. So superman, Toby followed suit, wondering what it was like to walk on water. The ice wasn’t as think or as hard as it first looked and it cracked under his feet, collapsing and taking Toby and Jackson with it. Jackson managed to get out of the water, but Toby didn’t have the same luck. The dog went for help, barking furiously until Steven went to investigate and realised the trouble. Cadence called the police after Steven told her to and rushed down to the water’s edge to see if he could see anything, do anything. But there was nothing that could be done in the frigid depths. He stood, waiting for the sirens to get louder, waiting for them to pull his son from the frozen waters. He’d been under for almost an hour and they thought by then there was no chance of his survival. But his pulse was extremely faint, practically non-existent. He was in hospital for quite some time but he made a full recovery.
And he was back to his inquisitive ways in no time at all. The rest of his childhood and high school years weren’t nearly as exciting. He hung out with friends, did his homework and got a part time job at a record store when he was sixteen. He took some time off before college to travel and to figure out what he wanted to do. But he eventually came back from Europe where he spent his time sightseeing and writing to study journalism at NYU. He’s in his final year now with plans of taking on an internship somewhere in the city. If he shows enough promise there are usually positions for fact checkers open at the New Yorker. He’s got to start somewhere and he figures that’s his starting point.
