NIKOLAUS DRAYTON O’CONNELL
FULL NAME: Nikolaus Drayton O’Connell.
NICKNAMES: He usually goes by Niko.
AGE: twenty-five.
SEXUALITY: straight.
STATUS: single
GROUP: citizen
GRADE: N/A
MAJOR: N/A
JOB OCCUPATION: Radio Personality.
HAIR: Brown, kept short enough to just run his fingers through, which is coincidently how he usually puts into style in the mornings. A quick slick of wax through and a tweak here and there and he’s good to go
EYES: brown.
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: None really worth telling stories about
TATTOOS: He has a Latin “know thyself” tattoo on the underside of his left wrist and a naval cannon on top of his left wrist in reference to his grandfather (and his namesake).
PIERCINGS: None.
PLAY-BY: Ryan Reynolds!
LIKES: flying, parties, trying new things, the Caribbean, helicopters, gadgets, Jacuzzis, nightclubs, being on the radio, technology, motorbikes, cars in general, spicy nachos, beer, joking around, shopping, mouthwash, coffee, bananas, political satire shows, baseball games, jet skiing, ice cream sundaes, leather jackets.
DISLIKES: neckties, warm drinking water, dry eyes, hangovers, orange juice, green tea, people who are too serious, circus, bats, the flu, harsh name calling, being lectured, stepping in chewing gum, flat soda, formal events, cliff-hanger endings to his favourite TV shows, two-faced people, cats, the rain ruining his plans, wanting to laugh when he really shouldn’t.
FEARS: bats, the circus, feeling truly alone..
SECRETS: Two nights of the week, he helps out at the homeless shelter and soup kitchen. He doesn’t broadcast this information or really tell anyone about it since it doesn’t “fit” with his persona, for one, and two, because it’s something he does to give back to the community and he doesn’t want any sort of credit, praise or attention for doing something he thinks more people should be doing.
PERSONALITY: Niko is rather the cheeky chappy. He’s a flirt without even realising that he’s doing it most of the time and then even when he knows better he sometimes can’t help himself. Charismatic and confident, he’ll strike up a conversation with anyone and everyone given half the chance and usually manages to find a way to win them over. He rarely takes no for an answer and is stubborn enough to keep pushing someone. He’s a social butterfly and often out at parties or clubs whenever he has the chance. He’s energetic, even when he’s tired and can usually push himself through a tough morning if necessary. A joker at heart, Niko is rarely serious, which some people find annoying since he often has a quip for every scenario or finds humour in something that he ought not to laugh at. His own sense of humour is quite satirical and immature at times, which can be either a hit or a miss with people. Niko often hears the phrase boys and their toys whenever people talk about him, which he doesn’t mind. He does love gadgets, cars, bikes and taking a helicopter out for a flight when he can. Young and with cash to burn, he does give off a devil may care vibe and has a spontaneous, fast approach to life. Not quite as reckless as he once was, Niko can still find himself in hot water fairly easy and catch him in the wrong mood and he’ll throw a punch to prove his point. Luckily, those moods come rarely for him these days, but he’s still not afraid of a confrontation and sometimes he can’t talk his way out of a situation with a witty line and a “c’mon man”. Romance, so far, has mostly been about the chase. He loves it and there seems to be a trend amongst women that they enjoy being chased. Niko likes to impress a girl, but usually everything is short lived and temporary. He’s not found anyone who looks past the outside yet, which is a big deal for him.

SIBLINGS: Adrian Lewis O’Connell, 29.
OTHERS: Gage Audrina Rose, 21, radio partner..

HOMETOWN: New Orleans, Louisiana
HISTORY: Stuart and Alexandra met through their jobs when a company merger proved successful. At first they squabbled over boundaries and credit for certain parts of their work, but beneath all of their frustrations people could tell that there was more to the relationship than a colleague rivalry. Eventually, this became obvious to the two in question and over the course of a few years they took their relationship further, with declarations of love and then later marriage. They took another few years to settle into their home and to set some security in place before starting a family. Once they felt financially set and both believed to be at the right place in their lives, they had Adrian.
When Adrian was four, Nikolaus came along. The sensible parents were content with their two sons and wanted to give them nothing but the best in their lives. They had a beautiful home in a trustworthy gated community and paid good money for their sons to have a fine education and tutors to help them in the subjects they struggled with. From early days, Adrian was more academically driven and successful than his little brother was and at first Niko didn’t mind. He was young enough to still follow Adrian around and copy him, trying to be just like his big brother. Like all siblings they clashed from time to time, but they got along fairly well generally, though they could never really say that they were best friends. Adrian was too serious and committed to learning for Niko, who was more fun-loving and much more of a joker than his brother was.
It was these differences that eventually turned the two brothers into the characters they later became in life. Stuart expected nothing but the best from his boys and would tell them as such over dinner of an evening. His parenting techniques were strict, a little on the harsh side, but with good intentions even if the boys didn’t always notice them. He didn’t accept bad grades, he didn’t appreciate reports of Niko slacking off and joking around in the classroom and he didn’t exactly hold back when it came to telling his sons as much. Alexandra often had to follow her husband around and clean up the mess he left in his way, reassuring her children that they were loved, but they could always try harder and aspire to be more than what they were. They had both come from over-achieving families and expected their sons to embrace the same sort of love for academia as they had.
Adrian certainly did, but Niko did not. He could make good grades and could probably have done better in school if he had buckled down, but he was easily distracted and enjoyed joking about too much. Whether it was flirting with a girl or being a bit of a smartass, he did it and unfortunately it was the sort of thing that drove a bit of a wedge between him and his family. They didn’t appreciate his lax attitude to his education and with Adrian always getting higher grades and always being the more academically successful son, Niko felt like they were trying to force him into something that he wasn’t. It was probably this angst and this constant push from his parents that led to him rebelling slightly during his teenage years.
Niko never did anything too extreme, but he did cut class, get into a fight or two and generally get into mischief around the city. There were worse students and tougher rebels out there, but Niko had the money to make the image work. He had a “badass” car that drew attention, later a motorbike…he was a boy who liked his toys and it showed. Girls liked it, too, because of the general attitude and impression it seemed to give off when they arrived home from a date on the back of a Harley Davidson or in the seat of some flash car. Too many times Stuart threatened to take it all away from his son, but Alexandra was a little more lenient. She didn’t like to admit to it, but she sort of understood how it had come to this and didn’t exactly want to push Niko any further than he had already gone. He might have been sneaking out to parties, breaking curfew and getting into trouble with teachers, but she just looked at it from the point of view that there were worse things he could have been doing; drugs, crime…real dangerous stuff that was beyond a teenager just acting out.
Things calmed down a little bit once he admitted that he was attending college despite one or two rash threats made in the heat of the moment and arguments with his father. He had been accepted to study Communication Technology at NYU. It wasn’t exactly what Stuart had hoped for when his sons had been little boys, but he had been told too many times by Alexandra to stop comparing their sons. Adrian was off training to be a lawyer and he should just be thankful that Niko did have the start of a plan for his own future, even if it did leave a lot of unanswered questions, “don’t know” answers and worries.
Niko made the move into a comfortable New York apartment gifted to him by his parents. Of course, most of his lifestyle didn’t change and the college atmosphere only worked to exaggerate aspects of it. The parties, social life and the chance to get into trouble intensified, but Niko managed to stay on top of his coursework and grades enough to maintain a decent average. One of those assignments involved a small role on the university radio station. It was something Niko took to surprisingly easily, stunning his professor in the process with just how natural he sounded. It was only one assignment, but Niko remained at the student station after it was over, co-hosting an evening show that aired twice a week with another of his classmates. It ran right up until his graduation and then he had the hard task of finding his feet in “the real world”.
He got a gig on a small show that aired in the middle of the night and mainly catered to the night owls and the cabbies. It wasn’t as lively as Niko wanted and he preferred to be out at night rather than listening to the “thoughtful” music people always seemed to request as the dead of the night hit. However, it got his personality out there a little bit. He was known for the slightly cheeky comments he would slip in here and there and the stories he would share. His parents didn’t exactly expect their son to go into working on the radio, but even they couldn’t deny that Niko was gifted at it.
Then came the opportunity he was waiting for; a chance to co-host a morning show. It was a bigger audience, a better concept and the chance to be a hell of a lot livelier than he could be in the middle of the night when call ins were scarce or people just wanting to share their sorrows. He got a chance to bounce off someone else again and their rapport and their banter seemed to prove successful, since a few years later they’re both still on the air and pushing their show to get more publicity and pulling more crazy stunts when they’re able to. He’s pretty sure that some of the time their producer wants to smash his head into the desk because of something he said or did, but even when he shows up at the studio after a night out on the town, Niko is completely committed to the job, even if his persona sometimes suggests otherwise.
In the time when he’s not on the radio or doing something in preparation for the show, Niko is making the most of his life. He does some odd hobbies to pass the time during the day, such as learning to pilot a helicopter! He just obtained his commercial licence after using the last couple of birthdays and Christmases to get the money from his parents. It might come in useful for work events or he might choose to do something separate from the radio with it, just as a side job or sorts to keep it from going to waste. He does give off the image of living this lavish, expensive life, but most of it is just down to his hobbies and the fact that he did do a damn good job of saving inheritance money from grandparents and saving plans from his childhood.
At twenty-five, there is still a lot Niko wants to do, but his heart is in the show more than anything else. Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish the persona from the man since it’s a very fine difference, but one that matters. He’s finding himself, living the dream quite a bit and probably turning someone’s hair grey before its time.
