Luna was having a really rough day today. The previous night, she had a nightmare about Liam. He was stuck inside of a glass box that was quickly filling up with water. No matter how fast Luna ran or how hard she tried to pull the lever to stop the water, she kept failing. Liam kept screaming for help, pounding on the glass. After a while of trying to save him, he appeared in front of her, soaking wet. He looked like a zombie. He was pale a clammy looking. His dark hair was even darker than usual. He had dark circles around his eyes. When she reached out for him, he let out a blood curdling scream, which made Luna sit up, breathing heavily. After she had calmed herself down enough to to back to sleep, she slept without anymore dreams.
She had woken up thirty minutes late for class, which meant she wasn't able to shower or do anything before class. She just had to get up and go. After her classes were over, Nick decided that he needed to go shopping. Of course, Luna had to go with him to make sure he had enough money to spend on whatever he needed. Damion was unavailable to do it, as per usual. He was at band rehearsal or something stupid like that. After she took her oldest brother shopping for booze, she went back to their shared apartment, only to find it being set up for a party. Apparently, Nick had forgotten to tell her about the party he was throwing at their shared apartment.
She immediately got into a screaming match with Nick, telling him how inappropriate it was to throw a house party without consulting the other two members of the house. Nick ended up telling her that he had asked Damion, and that Damion had agreed and offered to supply the music. Without another thought, Luna went to her room, slamming the door. She packed a bag, and she left the apartment without telling her brother's bye. She made her way to her best friend's house, knocking on the door. All she wanted to do was sit down and relax. She didn't want to think about anything. She just wanted to have someone there to tell her everything was going to be okay or just make her laugh. She wanted her best friend's comfort.

Missy had a rare day off from both class and work, so she was spending it at home, finally fixing up some of the thrift store pieces she had found and wanted to touch up for the apartment she shared with her boyfriend. Mikey was out of town on some work thing, like he did for a few days every now and then, so it was just Missy and Harley and Quinn for the next two nights until he got back into the city. Right now the cats were both sleeping in their condo, which left Missy with extra time to get stuff done since she didn’t have two cats clambering on her and mewing for attention. Since getting up and having breakfast that morning, Missy had showered, dressed and curled up on the couch with her decorated cases by her side and the bags of thrift store purchases at her feet, ready to work.
The bags were full of little things; picture frames she had found, new fabrics for cushions, bookends that just needed a bit of a clean up to be perfect again. Ever since they had left Alabama and moved to New York City, Artemis was forever decorating and re-decorating their apartment with trinkets and things she had salvaged and then jazzed up to suit her and Mikey’s style. There was a reason she had finally enrolled at college to study interior design; she was good at it and naturally did it without even needing to. At first it was just something to keep her hands busy in a strange place when Mikey was occupied with chasing his dreams, but when it turned out she was good at it, Missy figured she may as well try to make something of it.
Setting down one of her finished frames, which had gone from a dark brown to being painted silver with a deep purple rim, Missy looked at the rest of the things she could work on next. She was contemplating getting started on making up the new cushions for their old couch, but first she needed to get a drink; her glass of juice was empty. Tucking her iPod into her pocket, and checking that her headphones weren’t about to be yanked off her head when she untangled herself, she moved to their tiny kitchen, pausing only when she thought she heard someone at the front door. Their apartment entrance was unusual in that it faced onto the street, rather than sharing a hallway entrance with their neighbours, but then Missy and Mikey lived in one of the converted basements of an old building. Putting the glass down she moved to peer through the frosted glass and it took no more than a second to recognise her best friend on the other side. Pulling it open, Missy smiled at Luna and stepped aside to let her in, but being her best friend she didn’t need to hear anything to know there was something bothering Luna. “What’s wrong?” She asked, closing the door behind her.

As Luna waited for Missy to open the door, she looked at the wall beside her. She wasn't super girly, but she didn't like bugs. So, whenever she went to Missy's house and walked down the steps that led to her little basement-converted-apartment, she looked for bugs. She didn't want one to sit on her, and she didn't want to take it into the apartment with her. When she saw Missy peak through the curtain, she waved, her face lighting up when she saw her best friend. There was no feeling like seeing your best friend after a rough day. It was like you finally knew that things were going to turn around, like they were a sign that things were going to be okay again. She walked inside when the door opened, and she put her stuff on the floor beside her.
"What's wrong is I live with two giant assholes who have no respect for me living with them."
She told her, sounding annoyed.
"Nick apparently threw a party without telling me, and he wanted to go buy stuff for it. So, obviously I had to take him because Damion is never home. After that is when I found out about the party. And to make things worse, Damion knew about the party, too, and he was totally okay with it. Neither one of those assholes thought it would be nice to tell me about it or ask me about it."
She told her, rolling her eyes.
"Sometimes I wonder why I even live with them. Then I realize that they wouldn't be able to survive without me there to take care of them."
She snapped. She just wanted to rant. She didn't mean any of it, and she hoped Artemis knew that.
"Not to mention all I wanted to do tonight was lay in bed and relax. I had an awful morning before that. Nightmares and waking up late for class."
She kept that part brief. She didn't like talking about Liam, and since her nightmare had been about Liam, she didn't really feel like talking about it. Maybe if she talked about them, she wouldn't have as many nightmares as she did.
"But my brother's had to ruin my night in, of course. And I knew Mikey was out of town, not that he would mind me being here, but still. I feel bad sometimes when I barge in on you two. He probably thinks you're cheating on him with me or something."
She joked at the end.
"But... no. I was hoping it could be a girls night. If you aren't busy, that is."
She finally finished speaking, a little out of breath from how much she talked just then. She looked at Missy, looking hopeful, even though she basically knew the answer.

Missy never expected to be living in New York by the age of twenty-one. She especially never expected to be estranged from her family and cosy with a boyfriend of five years at her age. It was nice to be in love, and to have Mikey in her life, but it was so far from everything that had been planned when high school had started. She knew plans changed, they always did, but this was still a great deal more than she ever thought she would have in her life at this point. College was really the only thing she had predicted, but even that was different than she thought. By now she had planned to be wrapping up those four years of education, but in actual fact she was only just starting out. If anything, the last couple of years and everything the fates had thrown her way had left Missy unwilling to try and predict the future.
Widening her blue eyes, Missy looked at Luna and then sighed. “I’ll get the ice cream.” She crossed through to the modest kitchen and stooped down to open the freezer, digging past the bag of frozen peas which she was pretty sure had been in there for the best part of a year to find the nearly untouched tub of chocolate ice cream at the back of the drawer. Missy carried on listening to Luna’s problematic rant as she fished the spoons from the overcrowded cutlery drawer. She didn’t know why they had so much in there, and she was certain half of the utensils in there had never been used. As frugal as she could be now she had been a little bit giddy during the first few shopping trips and had picked up things they might one day need, even if she had no clue what they really were.
Moving back through and offering a spoon to Luna, Missy curled up on the couch and pulled the lid off the ice cream. “Mikey gets it. Besides, his friends crash on the couch often enough.” She smiled. Missy never minded the guys being over, just like Mikey never had a problem with Luna being there. “A girl’s night sounds perfect! But we might need some supplies. I only have ice cream and maybe a frozen pizza.” Since Mikey was away she hadn’t seen the point in doing a grocery shop until closer to when he was home, or even until he was home. They could probably order something in, but it might be fun to run to the store and stock up on junk food, too. “And then we can plot all the ways to get revenge on your brothers.” Missy smirked, a mischievous twinkle in her sapphire eyes. She wasn’t as innocent as she sometimes looked.

Artemis had been one of Luna's only close friends that happened to be a girl. Most of the time, she related better to guys than girls. The only friends she had who were female were Arimet, who was Damion's fiance, Ross, who happened to be Nick's best friend, and her sisters. Arimet and Luna didn't have too much in common, but they were friendly and sisterly towards each other because of Ari joining the family. Obviously, that engagement hadn't worked out since Damion and Ari wanted totally different things after high school. In fact, Luna hadn't talked to Ari since before they broke off the engagement. She had called to tell Luna she was sorry about Liam, but that was about it. Ross and Luna had never really been close, but she was always over because of how close she was to Nick. And Luna had kind of stolen Liam from Ross, but she honestly didn't care since they weren't that close. Luna's sisters had been the closest to her out of the four, but that was kind of a given seeing as they had grown up together. Plus, they argued a lot like most sisters did. So, when Luna had met Missy, she had been super excited to have a friend who was a girl and happened to be similar to herself.
Luna took a spoon from Missy, taking a spoonful of the chocolate ice cream and shoveling it into her mouth. Luna wasn't sure why, but ice cream and chocolate in general really helped soothe any problems she had. She felt that it was a girl thing. You could hand a girl a piece of chocolate if she was upset, and she would be fine afterwards. She was thankful to have such a thing as chocolate in her life, but it still made her question why it was so powerful.
"Mikey is a great guy, Missy. Don't ever lose him."
She told her friend. Luna was sentimental about stuff like that. She wanted true love to win every time, and she felt that they had something like her and Liam had had in the past. Luna felt that once you found your true love, you needed to hold onto it forever and never let it go. She also knew what it felt like to have her love taken from her so abruptly, and she didn't want anyone, especially her best friend, to ever feel that type of pain.
"We can run to the store real quick and get some stuff. I need alcohol... and I can cook something, if you want. You always cook for me, so I mean, the least I can do it repay the favor. Maybe some face masks or something...Have like a home-spa night."
She added, just throwing random things out there. She let out a little laugh at her friend's diabolical words.
"I think that might be the best part about tonight."

Mostly Missy hung out with Mikey and his band, and then Luna after she had met her. She had never been a popular girl, always a little too different from the rest of her conservative classmates to fit the bill. She liked finding new music, and Batman villains, sweet treats and salvaging junk from thrift stores and flea markets. It was not the type of behaviour that had been expected of her and then when Mikey had come into her life, well, that was the straw that broke the camel’s back. That had been how her brother Preston had phrased it when she cried to him one night. He was more forgiving than their parents and he hadn’t considered Missy to do anything wrong, but at the same time he didn’t want to be in the middle of it all. She still spoke to him now he was at university in Michigan, but it was short text messages and a phone call once in a blue moon when she was feeling particularly lonely without Mikey around.
It was hardly the life she had imagined for herself, but Artemis was oddly happy. It was different, but it was hers. She didn’t speak about what had happened back in Alabama to anyone, but that was mostly down to her love for her parents still. They might have thrown her own and started to act like she didn’t exist, but Missy still loved them. The thought of people badmouthing them really upset her and so she didn’t tell her story out of the fear that her words might lead to people judging and slandering the two who had brought her into this world. She still clung to the hope that one day they might forgive her and welcome her back home. Smiling ruefully, Missy glanced at one of the photographs of Mikey on the wall and tilted her head. She couldn’t picture her life without him. “I don’t plan on it. He’s all I got.”
She snapped herself out of her moment and then laughed warmly. “I know, like, four dishes I can whip up in fifteen minutes! It’s hardly gourmet cooking.” Missy laughed, digging her spoon back through the ice cream. It was hardly a varied diet that she lived off, but cooking was one of those things she hadn’t really done much of by the time she was getting thrown out of her home. She’d picked a little bit up along the way, but in truth she was a little wary of trying anything new or complicated in case she set off the fire alarm and had the whole building evacuated onto the street. It was an embarrassment she’d rather be spared. “Let me just put this mess away and we can go to the store. A spa night could be fun!” Missy grabbed the bags of thrift store shopping and returned them to the bedroom wardrobe until next time, and then put everything else back into the boxes where her decorating supplies were houses. The boxes then went back behind the couch out of sight so the apartment looked tidy once more. “Of course it will be. It’s really the best part about having siblings. The rest of the time they suck.” She had gotten on fairly well with Preston until she’d never seen him again and their relationship had been reduced to secret phone calls, but there were still a few pranks in there that had gone unnoticed by their strict parents. Missy crammed her feet into her shoes and grabbed her purse and keys. “Right, I’m ready.”

Luna's soul felt a lot older than it actually was. Sometimes she couldn't believe that she was still in college and still a teenager! She felt at least the age of twenty-six, maybe even older. It often confused her when other kids her age were acting childish when in fact, they were still children. Sometimes she had to remind herself that just because she had gotten her childish ways out in high school (for the most part), others were just now getting the freedom they craved. Luna and the rest of her brothers and sisters had been raised in Rhode Island and had a very nice childhood. Well, once Nick and Nickie came into the picture, their childhood became nice and normal. Their mom kept a sharp eye on them, making sure they couldn't get into too much trouble. They had zero freedom from their parents, so when they went to a boarding school across the country, they each went a little crazy in their own respects. Nick became an alcoholic. Nickie became more reserved and compulsive. Aly started sleeping around and partying more. Damion had started his own band, stayed up late, and covered his body in tattoos. Luna had serial dated and gotten married as soon as she turned eighteen. Freedom was nice and all, but Luna firmly believed that parents should give their children a taste of freedom while growing up so they wouldn't go off the deep end once they gained their independence.
"The only thing I can make in less than fifteen minutes is probably a sandwich. It'll take me a good hour to prepare anything else."
She laughed, amused at how bad of wife she would've been if she had been given a fair shot with Liam. She had never really thought about being the perfect wife to him. He always told her that she was going to be perfect for him because she was herself. He had told her that they could always go to dinner or he would do the cooking. He knew Luna was a terrible chef and that it took a long while to finish a dish. Luna was also pretty bad at keeping a house kept up. She rarely ever cleaned anything, including her own bedroom. From what her mother had taught her about marriage, she would be a terrible wife. Felicity, her mom, was a lawyer by day, and super mom by night. She would cook and clean for the kids and her husband. She was always in a good mood, and it seemed that she had all of the answers. Luna didn't know how her mom did it, but she somehow did, and it bothered Luna that she hadn't inherited it form her momma.
"Can I borrow some clothes before we leave? I would rather not go to the store in a panda pajama shirt."
She asked Missy, looking down at her shirt.
"I love my siblings, and I couldn't live without them in my life, but sometimes they just get so damn annoying. That could also be because when one gets tired of talking to me, I have three more lined up to take a turn and the cycle continues for the rest of forever."

Missy had grown up a lot over the last couple of years. She had never expected to be dealing with bills, looking over finances and making sure there was money to keep food on the table through the month when she was barely twenty-one. Hell, she had been doing it long before she was legally able to drink! Missy didn’t mind that, but there were a lot of responsibilities that she faced up to now that she never expected to be dealing with for another few years. At least that had been the way of her thoughts before she met Mikey. Everything had changed then and she couldn’t complain when she loved him with all of her heart. Even when times were tough and long shifts made her feet hurt, Missy wouldn’t change the life she shared with her boyfriend for anything. She loved New York City almost as much as she loved him, too. It was a wonderful city, and the place she called home now.
Missy laughed and shook her head slowly. “When Mikey has the band over I don’t think they would last an hour waiting for food. They’d probably stick their hands into a boiling pan to see if it was done yet. Some of them are just ravenous constantly, I think.” She said, pushing her blonde hair back from her face and sighing. She adored those guys, found them hilarious at the end of a long day, but they could probably eat the rations of a small country given half the chance. Sometimes she was kind of glad she arrived home when she did, or else she worried about she might come home to; an empty refrigerator for starters!
“You know where my wardrobe is.” Missy said, waving her hand in the direction of the bedroom. Most of her clothes were picked up cheaply in sales or at thrift stores, but they were still cute and hers. She didn’t spend a vast amount on them and since she had stopped growing at fifteen, growth spurts happening when she was younger, Missy still had some older clothes that had aged well, too. “Siblings exist to eventually become annoying. I think it’s the same for everyone.” She shrugged lightly. She missed Preston a hell of a lot, but she understood that he didn’t want to be caught in the middle between his sister and their parents. He did what he could for Missy, spoke to her when he had the chance, but it wasn’t the same as seeing him every day. She hoped he’d get around to visiting her like he said he would, but she knew he was busy with his own life, and she didn’t hold her breath for it. Preston kept his relationship with her a secret from their strict parents and she didn’t want him to lose what she had already lost. She wouldn’t wish that on anyone, least of all him.
