Theo didn’t know how he would get through life without a caffeine fix. During those times when his insomnia was wrestling with him it was the only thing that kept him upright. The rest of the time, he needed it to kick start his morning with Issy, or else he’d be balancing an infant on his hip and letting her do whatever she wanted to him and their house until at least lunchtime when some semblance of conscience finally kicked in. No, Theo definitely needed his coffee, and it was something he relied more on as he slipped into his late twenties. It turned into more of a habit now, and he frequently found himself standing in line at Starbucks before he even realised he had headed out that way, especially when he was on his way to the theatre for rehearsals or before a show itself. One of his cast mates of a previous show had informed him that he had done the entirety of opening week with coffee breath for the first act; something Theo wasn’t completely happy about, and he wished someone had told him sooner, but people were far too polite it seemed.
Today, he needed something to drink while he looked over his newest script. The show he had just signed onto was something new, never been done before and Theo would be lying if he said he wasn’t a little nervous about being cast as the leading man in something that had never been performed before. He wanted to get it right, to nail it and do the script, and its writer, justice. Leaving Issy in the care of Lilia for the afternoon, he had left their house to find somewhere he could focus. He had a small room back home where he could work, but with the sounds of kid’s TV and Issy’s adorable laughter in the background, Theo hadn’t been able to get beyond the second page of the script and he wanted to have at least the first three scenes partially memorised before they met up for the first rehearsals next Monday.
It was that reason he found himself in Starbucks, ordering a hazelnut latte and taking a seat near the window, but away from the crowd at the counter and helping themselves to napkins, straws and other condiments. Theo had selected a muffin to go with his coffee and was picking at it with his thumb and index finger while he read, popping the sweet treat between his teeth as his blue eyes scanned the highlighted text before him. This was definitely going to push him as an actor, and Theo was excited for it. Reaching for his coffee, he sipped at the hot drink and licked his lips, wary of getting any of the froth caught up in the scruff he hadn’t bothered to shave off. Leaning back in his seat, Theo’s chair bumped the person’s behind and he glanced around with British politeness to apologise. “Oh, I’m sorry, hen. I forget how much room I take up sometimes.” Consciously, Theo scooted his chair back under the table, and glanced behind to check that there was sufficient space there now.

As Anna sipped on her coffee, she stared down at the table, realizing that she really had no adult friends. She had people she talked to at parties or on photo shoots, but that was it. All of her friends lived in other cities, hours away from her. It was a pretty lonely feeling, she realized. She just never had time to go out and meet people like she had done in high school. Between work and Vanya, she barely had any time for herself. In fact, she didn't even remember the last time she had been able to go to Starbucks and just be alone for a little while. She frowned a little at that realization, wondering if she should start penciling in an hour or two a week for just herself. She probably should...
As she mentally went through her weekly schedule, she felt something tap the back of her chair. It brought her out of her trance, and she blinked a few times. She turned her head slightly, smiling at the apology.
"Don't worry about it, honey."
She replied, sipping on her coffee again. She stood up, figuring it was time for her to leave, anyway. As she pushed her chair in, she realized that the guy was about her age. She furrowed her eyebrows, and then pulled out the chair across from him.
"Hey, is it cool if I join you?"
She asked, sitting down anyway. She placed her and Vanya's drinks on the table, leaning back in the chair, looking at Theo.
"So, did you really call me hen?"
She asked him. She wasn't offended by it, though she assumed most American's would have been. She actually found the nickname amusing. She wondered where he was from or how he had come to call people a hen.

Theo worked hard to create a future for Izzy. While the work and auditions were coming regularly and parts were steady he was making sure his name was growing in the acting industry. In a perfect world he would be able to just pick up a job when he fancied it, but financially that wasn’t wise. He wanted his daughter to have a happy life without having to worry about things, be them large or small. She already had to grow up without a mother and that was bad enough for the bright eyed infant who was still too young to even understand that her mother was missing from her life. Theo made sacrifices for her, and he didn’t mind doing so. He didn’t care for nights out, and his social interactions with cast members were enough to keep him going. He was big enough to look after himself, even if his ways were occasionally unconventional because he chose to take a long route to somewhere rather than the easy way.
After apologising, Theo turned his attention back to his script, scanning over the lines to figure out where he had left off. It was only when he heard the woman’s voice again that he looked up once more. “Sure.” He was used to being in the background when he wasn’t up on the stage, pretending to be anyone but himself. He had always been the kind of guy who faded away into the crowd and Theo had enjoyed that about his life. He was a private man, and he liked keeping to himself for the most part. He closed the script over and wrapped his hand around his coffee instead. Chuckling at her question, Theo nodded his head twice. “I did. Scottish habits never die.” His accent was still as thick as when he had first moved to New York for Jenny, and the habits and quirks that made him stand out now were just common things if he were to head back home. Most of the time Theo didn’t even realise he was doing anything odd since it was just second nature to him. He raised his coffee to his lips and took a sip, moving only to slip the script back into his bag before he could end up with coffee rings all over it, or worse. It was a little too early in the rehearsals to ruin the pages of his lines.

Anna studied the man in front of her. He kind of reminded her of Gabe. He had the same hair color and facial hair. Though, Gabe had brown eyes. He also didn't have an accent like the man in front of her did. They did carry the same air about them, though. Friendly and kind, but not the type of person you would want to mess with. Anna wasn't sure why she got that vibe from the stranger, but she did. There was something about him that made her feel like he would be insane if he had a reason for it. Maybe it was the accent he had. Scottish people were known for their tempers. There was actually a little Scottish girl that Anna had gone to school with. She wasn't friends with her or anything. In fact, Anna tried to stay away from her. She was a little feisty thing. She also seemed kind of...strange. Like she was hiding a secret. Anna didn't care too much for getting to know other people's secrets. They normally wanted a secret from you in exchange, and Anna wasn't one for sharing her personal life that much. The less people knew about her and her past, the better she felt about life in general.
"Are you an actor?"
She asked, eyes glancing down at the script he had on the table in front of him. She looked back at his face again to see if she had seen him in any movies before, but she wasn't sure if she had or not. Then again, Anna didn't have a lot of time to sit down and watch movies or tv shows. The only thing she was really caught up on was what music was popular these days and everything fashion. She didn't know about the hottest actors or actresses, only what they wore to venues. She knew some of them, though, because she went to movie premiers sometimes, or they would show up to award shows or red carpet events. But she didn't sit down and watch their movies for fun.
"Don't let your habits die."
She told him with a smile.
"They're what make you unique, and you kind of need that here, if you want to stand out."
She added, placing her elbows on the table.
"I'm Anna, by the way. I know it's kind of weird when a strange woman sits at your table, but I promise I'm not that weird or strange."

Theo was used to the Scottish stereotype. In all honesty he thought too many people had watched Braveheart and had taken their entire opinion of the Scots from Mel Gibson’s portrayal of William Wallace. It was a little bit irksome since the movie itself was old, and while so many Scottish people were proud of good old Willy Wallace, he was part of the history and not a role model that many built their personality on. These days, like so many other people, they idolised celebrities and modern day figures of power. Theo himself had actors both deceased and living that he aspired to be like. He just didn’t shout it from the rooftops or make a big deal out of it, since he wanted to find his own defining attributes in the world, too, and hopefully not be too likened to someone else. It could be flattering, but at the same time he didn’t want to be identical to another actor out there or else what was the point?
Chuckling, Theo glanced down at his script on the table and then back at the woman before him, his eyebrows raised ever so slightly. “What gave me away?” He asked sarcastically, a small smirk in place. He might have been considered ‘a rising star’ in several reviews, but Theo was still modest about his career. He would tell people that he was an actor because that was what paid his bills, but he didn’t boast about the roles he had played, or the latest piece he was performing in. He had met a few people like that since graduating from college and breaking into acting. He didn’t really find them appealing to be around, and more often than not he avoided them and their invitations to parties and cocktails. There was nothing worse than listening to them gush about themselves.
Nodding in agreement with her, Theo remained quiet. It wasn’t that she was a total stranger that made him keep his lips together, Theo was just a naturally quiet guy. He always had been that way and even when he had been living with his wife, the beautiful Jenny, she had been the one who spoke for the both of them while Theo just listened and spoke up when he had something to say. “Theo. And I’ve seen plenty stranger.” New York was full of sights, and Scotland had been full of even more. Hogmanay parties always seemed to bring out the crazy in people and Theo had enough stories of old friends and family to blackmail them for the rest of their lives, if he ever wished to. Thankfully, for them at least, Theo wasn’t that kind of guy.

Anna loved meeting other people from her line of work. Sure, she wasn't an actress per say, but modeling had to deal a lot with acting. You had to portray your character with nothing more than a pose or a look in modeling. People thought that modeling was just a bunch of girls giggling backstage and living in the spotlight, but they didn't know the truth behind it. There were days where Anna couldn't afford to eat more than a few crackers. There were months where she had to go on a juicing diet so she could look better in a skimpy piece of clothing the designer was going to make her wear. There were times that photographers were so rude that Anna just wanted to burst out in tears, never returning again. But all the public saw was how Victoria's Secret portrayed it. How the girls were happy all the time, laughing all the time. How they talked about eating greasy cheese fries and just working out a little more the next day. How easy and fun the shows were. But they were also acting there.
So when she met others in entertainment, it made her excited. It made her feel like there were others out there who were going through similar things as she was with her career. It made her feel connected to the person, even if she had never met them before. They already had something in common, so it would be easier to get to know them. Plus, they could always help each other out someday. Anna always said that you couldn't know too many people, especially in the industry. That didn't mean you had to like each and every one of them; it just meant that you had to put on a nice face and pretend to like them in order to make it in life.
"When is your audition?"
She asked him.
"I bet you have. I've heard some stories about actors. They can be pretty strange cookies."
She told him, shaking her head at her choice of word. Anna was a mother, after all, so she was always picking up on the things Vanya was saying. Right now, her favorite slang word was 'cookie'. It sounded harmless enough to Anna, and Vanya said it so much that it just seemed natural coming out of her adult mouth.
"I promise I don't usually say things like calling people cookies. I have an eight-year-old who uses that term. Just slipped off the tongue, I guess."

Theo worked hard to get to where he was and he work continue to work hard to go further. He wasn't about to sell himself short or do something he disagreed with for a role. He had a young daughter to think about and he didn't want there to ever be anything in his past that she might discover and be horrified by. He dreamt of being old and grey and having Issy proud to call him her dad, though the thought of Issy growing up was a painful one. She might one day be able to do things and make decisions without reaching for her dada and it brought a lump to the Scotsman's throat just thinking about it. She was already growing too quickly for his liking and she was only one and a half! Still, his choices were formed around her and he wouldn't compromise his morals for anything, any director or any job. It just wasn't worth it.
Theo reached down to open his bag and then picked up the script, carefully slipping it to the safe confines of the satchel. It was a brand new production, never seen before and he was very touchy about his scripts. He already did everything in his power to keep them out of Issy's reach at home and he didn't want coffee stains on the paper, or crumbs between the pages now either. Smiling awkwardly, Theo slipped his bag back down by the leg of his chair. "Actually I already have the part." He admitted, modest about his success. He didn't think he would ever be one to thrive in the spotlight. He couldn't boast well, or really even talk about himself. It had always been Jenny sharing the news of his successes while he pleaded with her to stop. "I was just reading over lines."
Chuckling deeply, Theo nodded his head in understanding. "Kids say the darnest things, right." He mused, lifting his drink to his lips. Issy wasn't quite old enough to be saying the kind of things that made grown ups laugh hard enough to cry. She was still finding her words, fumbling over most of them. Ducks were 'quack quacks' and bedtimes was 'bo-bos', but she was still adorable and had her daddy wrapped around her little finger.
