SECRETS: She was attacked when she was seventeen by someone her mom owed money to. It’s the reason behind her scars and the nightmares that come back when she’s stressed.
PERSONALITY: Naia is very open minded. Whether she‘ll eventually agree is something very different, but she is always willing to hear someone out or give something a try before judging it and even then she won‘t try to sway anyone else‘s opinion unless it‘s something dangerous. She‘s patient, with a calming presence and ready to wait for someone to calm down or come around whatever the situation. She‘s curious and always wants to know or learn more, which is why she can already speak/understand four languages and is keen to learn more. She‘s a loyal friend who will always defend and stick by those who she cares about the most. She‘s rather modest and doesn‘t take compliments or praise very well. She‘s never been one to talk about herself or long for the limelight, so she struggles to deal with it now when the rare occasion rises when it falls on her. Despite being quite the dreamer Naia does have her feet firmly on the ground, determined and driven to try and make those dreams that often steal her away part of her reality. She‘s the type of person who will always look happy on the outside, but might be feeling heartbroken or devastated on the inside. She doesn‘t like to weigh others down with her problems though, bottling them away until she can’t take anymore and can sometimes run away instead of facing up to them. She can be a confidant to anyone, but sometimes feels as though it is up to her to fix other people‘s problems which means there are many days when it seems as if she‘s carrying the world on her shoulders. She’s a total romantic but isn’t confident when it comes to matters of the heart, scared of what might happen. A little vulnerable to heartbreak and the urban roughness of New York, Naia has a kind heart and is always looking for the goodness in others, but if she ever discovers that someone is hurting their family or acting selfish, she will turn on them without a moment of hesitation. She’s an emotional girl but tries not to let others in on her own problems. She’s maternal too and loves children, though this mainly stems from raising her four younger brothers for most of their lives. She loves adventures, but not danger and she’s quite feminine though she won’t pass up a day every now and then where she gets to shoot paintballs at her friends. She’s independent and strong and can very much take care of herself and the others in her life without too much thought. She likes to keep busy so that she feels useful, but sometimes she needs someone to pull her away and remind her that it’s okay to relax every once in a while and have fun for herself.

HISTORY: Naia was the first child born not long after Anthony married Sophia. She was a happy little child who was overjoyed when a few years later her mother gave birth to the first of her brothers, with three more following over nine years. Her childhood was normal, average. Anthony worked on boats, fishing most days and Sophia ran her own little café in the small town they called their home. Naia, when she wasn’t in school spent a lot of her time helping her younger brothers. She taught Nicolai how to swim, Morgan got maths lessons, Dominic got help with his scouting and Sky learnt how to read with the help of his big sister. She was maternal from the start and always eager to help out around the house, especially when it came to raising her siblings.
She took dance classes at the local community centre too when she was a little girl and would often put on little shows for her parents and brothers, occasionally coercing Nicolai into being her partner, though he was hardly as light footed as him nimble big sister.
When Naia was twelve, she started to notice that something wasn’t right. They were a large family, but not very rich and scrimping and saving was nothing new to them, but suddenly there were whispers around the table when Anthony and Sophia thought the children weren’t there. There seemed to be trouble in paradise and soon enough Anthony threw Sophia out, not caring about the consequences. A divorce promptly followed and Naia learnt that her mother wasn’t the wholesome, maternal woman she had thought her to be. Sophia had been in with a bad crowd when she was younger; thieves and junkies and although she had turned her life around when she met Anthony, the mother of five had slipped and was back to her old ways, squandering the money she earned on drugs again. Anthony threw her out and left her to protect the children, but life got harder and Naia had to assume responsibility for the family whenever her father was working. She matured faster than she ought to have, and learnt how to take care of her brothers so that her father could go to work and she could keep an eye on her siblings and give them a decent dinner each night. She learnt to cook and mend clothes from the neighbour next door who would often help the young redhead out when she needed it.
As her teens progressed, so did Naia’s work. She took care of the family more than ever now, even though her dad had found a decent balance again. Sophia reappeared too, with visitation rights, though Naia never truly trusted her again for what she had put the family through. They started growing vegetables in the garden, so that the boys could do something to help out about the house and so there was extra food to sell down at the market when money did get tight. She altered clothes, mended broken bags and did other odd jobs for her neighbours too in order to keep the family above water. Anthony did what he could, taking on more work when Naia got older, but she still wanted to what she could to help. Rose and Wilfred often helped the family out and Rose would send a pie their way when she was baking and Wilfred fixed anything around the house for them when it fell into disrepair. They had the sympathy of the town, but people liked Naia anyway for the sweet soul she was and how she was so quick to step into the game and keep her brothers and father fed and keep the family from falling apart any more than it already had. Sophia managed to prove herself to the courts when Naia was fifteen, which meant that she got the kids on every other weekend. Naia was less than impressed by this, but she couldn’t bring herself to leave her brothers alone in the company of their mother, so she went and just remained emotionally distant from Sophia.
At school, Naia kept to herself. She had a few friends, but none who were really special to her. It wasn’t that she wasn’t easy to get along with, but they lived in a small town and everyone knew what her mother had done so people were always whispering about how much Naia had to do or sharing stories about the family and the things that were happening to them. A lot of people just sort of left her alone to deal with it all in her own way. Naia didn’t mind so much. It wasn’t like she had time for the prom since Dominic was sick and homecoming was just another thing she missed to care for her family. Nicolai often tried to encourage her to go out more, but she would hear none of it. She was happy with the way things were without needing a boyfriend or the drama that came with it all.
Naia never regretted her distrust of Sophia, especially not after the summer she turned seventeen. She called by to discuss Morgan’s birthday, but instead found Sophia unconscious with drugs on the table. Naia called for an ambulance and Sophia’s life was saved, but there were enough drugs found in the house that she was arrested and she lost her custody rights entirely. The seventeen year old soon found herself back in her moms house though this time it was to collect the belongings the children had there for when they stayed. She was getting it all together when someone came into the house. The man told her that Sophia owed him a lot of money; he had been her dealer and had hidden his stash at the house to avoid his own arrest, but was now claiming that Naia’s mom owed him for the lot since she had been caught with it all. Naia explained that it was nothing to do with her and tried to leave, but the dealer wanted none of it and when Naia slapped him, he attacked her. Most of it is a blur to her now, but she remembers the excruciating pain when he broke her ankle to keep her from running and then threatened to kill her if she didn’t find him the money, cutting her neck as a warning. Luckily, someone passing heard the commotion and called the cops, the dealer getting himself arrested and Naia getting saved. It caused a whole series of nightmares to plague the young woman and put the last nail in the coffin for her relationship with her mother; what if Nicolai or one of the others had been the one to go there that day? The break in her ankle was extremely severe and the doctors were surprised at how much damage he had done, but Naia couldn’t remember how he broke it, just the pain. She required surgery to pin it back together and her dancing hobby quickly became a nostalgic memory, she she’d probably never dance on it again; at least not professionally.
She graduated high school, but didn’t go off to college like the rest of her classmates. She stayed at home and worked hard to keep everything tip top. She took a small job at the bakery up the street and after much persuasion by Nicolai to have some fun, she went on a date with the son of the baker she worked for. He was a nice guy who had been in the grade above her for years and who had apparently been mesmerised by the young woman and how she had put her family back together at every obstacle and still managed to remain happy and innocent despite it all. Naia laughed it off, but he was a nice guy and she stayed with him.
She was starting to grow bored as the seasons changed again and she turned nineteen. Her siblings were able to do a lot for themselves now, with only Sky really needing care these days. Nicolai was working in a part time job and he was doing a lot more around the house too, keen to help Naia after all the years she had done it for them. It was Nicolai who recognised what was happening with his big sister. She was feeling trapped and useless now that others were able to care for themselves. He sat down with her one day in the old garden den she had helped him build when they were still kids and told it to her straight. She had given up most of her life for her brothers and now they needed to give her back the life they had taken from her without realising it. “What? You know how this goes. You’ll marry the baker’s son, have kids and play the role of housewife, but you’ll never be happy. You’ll never be the person you want to be.” He told her to be selfish, to do what she wanted to do more than anything and leave him to worry about the rest. He was nearly ready to graduate himself and already had a job lined up that would keep the income steady so she didn’t need to waste anymore of her life putting them first.
After much thought and talks with her dad and eldest brother, Naia applied for university in New York. If it was the city of dreams then maybe she could find hers there. Nicolai had been right and she needed to escape, at least for a bit to find who she really was and to confront the demons she had buried. Naia wanted to help those who were stuck in lives of crime and shady dealings. She was accepted to study criminology and took off the following fall for the big city that was so vastly different than Nova Scotia. She’d return to her home for the holidays and in the summer when she had the time off from work, but for now New York is her home and she still doesn’t know what she wants to do when it’s all over. Nothing stops her being who she is though now and it’s the freedom she found through the wisdom of her brother that keeps her happy right now. Will it be enough forever though?
