MICKEY TYLER WYVERN

SEXUALITY: straight.
STATUS: single
GROUP: student
GRADE: senior
MAJOR: double German and Spanish
JOB OCCUPATION: Waiter at WD-50.

SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: Only ones from his childhood and careless accidents
TATTOOS: None

LIKES: dressing up in costumes, dancing like a moron, fresh fruit, French Vanilla lattes, making people smile, Bond movies, Guitar Hero, superheroes, spoiling his sisters, face painting, the circus, late night adventures, the gym, Las Vegas, underground bars, historical tours, bowling, thunderstorms, apple juice, having friends crash on his sofa, glow sticks, football, giving gifts, Disneyworld..
DISLIKES: losing his glasses, people being sad, being startled awake, gin, when people are too “embarrassed” to try anything, sparkling water, overly violent video games, bad sandwiches, getting the flu, losing at card games, insensitive jerks, selfishness, angry sports fans, destruction, beanie hats, people not accepting of harmless pranks, grumpy people, missing socks, the dentist, getting face paint/dye stuck.
FEARS: the dentist, being poisoned, his sister getting sick again.
SECRETS: He still has his Pokémon cards from his childhood. They’re actually one of his most prized possessions along with all of his superhero and villain costumes.
PERSONALITY: People can just take one look at Mickey and realise that he just oozes confidence. He’s not cocky, but he’s the guy who will approach strangers without a second thought or ask the awkward questions everyone else is bumbling over. He’s also not fazed by public speaking or being put on the spot and loves the spontaneity of the moment. It’s pretty difficult to embarrass or humiliate him, but he sometimes doesn’t understand that it’s not the same for other people. It’s not entirely uncommon for the people he’s around to sometimes wish a hole would come and swallow one of them whole! He’s also a social butterfly and often throws parties or plans nights out whenever there’s nothing else happening. He’d rather be around his friends than be alone, and his couch is always open for anyone who needs a place to crash for whatever reason. He’s selfless and tries to make the people around him happy, whether he knows them or not. Mickey has a big heart and does the right thing whenever he can. He’s a charitable guy who often gives up plenty of his time to volunteer and cheer up the kids at the hospital, especially if it’s around the holidays or their birthdays. He’s caring and has quite the laid back attitude, but Mickey actually does have a good grasp on his responsibilities. He knows what is important and when to put that first in his life. He’s a bit of a softie, but he’s usually quick to spot when someone is walking all over him. He’s a joker with a habit of turning into a prankster around the right friends, but he never means any real harm by anything that he does. Obviously, not everyone sees the joke in it and it can backfire. He’s not an instigator of violence, but he will step in to intervene if he catches any bullying or drama about to break out. He was bullied throughout most of his life and won’t sit back and let anyone else take that. As for romance, he’s a charmer. Not overly flirtatious, but he lets a girl knows he likes her with candied hearts or a surprise bouquet of flowers. He doesn’t waste time on demanding girls who want ridiculous things from him and who expect him to give them all of the attention in the world, but he will spoil any girl who does capture his heart of gold! Mickey also loves the chase, so long as he thinks he might be in with a chance; he’s not about to turn crazy stalker on someone who really has no interest in him.

HISTORY: Jacob and Marissa met at a wedding of mutual friends. They bonded over their shared criticism of the DJ’s song choices at the reception and then things seemed to go from there. It took Jacob four long years to catch the hint that Marissa was waiting for a ring, but he did it elegantly and romantically on a trip to the Caribbean. It was two weeks before their wedding that Marissa received the news from her doctor that she was pregnant. She wouldn’t be anywhere near showing on her big day, but the news was still exciting and they announced it to everyone during the speeches and the toasts, mainly because they had to explain why the bride had orange juice and not the pricey champagne her father had paid for! Their little boy came healthy and screaming on a stormy November evening, and although the birth certificate read Michael Tyler Wyvern, he was never called by that name. From the second he was placed in Marissa’s arms he was Mickey. He did ask his parents when he was much older, but they just said “it was a thing at the time” and never elaborated any further on it.
Mickey was their pride and joy. He loved anything to do with superheroes from the moment he could understand them and would often be found sitting in the corner with action figures and his own imagination while Marissa worked. She was a make-up artist on a small, but popular, daytime drama series. Jacob worked as an investment banker in the city, usually only catching Mickey before he went to bed and first thing in the morning when he woke up and ran around the house pretending to be whatever superhero took his fancy that day. Breakfast wasn’t even out of the way before Mickey was running around and saving the world from some massive “KABOOM” disaster! He brought a lively atmosphere wherever he went and his parents raised him to be respectful and kind, which he was. His manners were always spot on and he was happy to be left to his own devices with his toys whenever the grown-ups were talking. He had little friends in the children of his parents’ friends, but as toddlers it was all fighting over the best toys and arguing over who was going to be the leader.
Not long after his seventh birthday came the surprise news that there would be two more additions to the family. Marissa and Jacob had been trying for another baby, but the moment the doctor told them it would be twins they were in shock. It wasn’t long before Mickey found himself with two baby sisters when he didn’t even want one! He had been asking for a brother for the whole nine months, not understanding that they couldn’t pick the gender. He was disappointed and annoyed almost constantly at the crying and how much attention they needed from his parents. He wasn’t used to running into a room and being told to wait a minute or go and entertain himself for a little longer.
At school he started out with friends and a decent childhood social life, but things changed when his classmates started to grow out of things like Pokémon and superheroes. Mickey still clung to those things and liked them. Sure his action figures found their way into boxes, but they were replaced with movies and comic books. As his friends became distant and grew more interested in different things, the bullies crawled out of the woodwork. Things were pretty bad, too and Mickey grew to hate going to school or playing out in the street beyond the safety of his front yard. He tried desperately to not let it get to him, but he was so wrapped up in wanting to be like those heroes that he never really dared step out to be himself. It was only when his twin sisters started to get closer to school age that things began to change.
Mickey found that he liked being a big brother once his sisters were old enough to sleep through the night and not scream for their every need. Of course he would cause trouble from time to time and annoy them, but for the most part he was a doting big brother who was more than happy to run around with his sisters on his back and be part of some crazy game to keep them out of their minder’s hair. It was only when he caught a little boy picking on Violet that he realised he couldn’t sit back and let the bullies win. He chased the little kid off and in that moment he felt like one of the many masked vigilantes he adored. Of course, chasing away little kids was a lot easier than dealing with his own tormentors, but that was something that would come with time and the right situations.
For the most part, he had a simple and easy life. It seemed like he fell asleep one night and woke up to high school. The bullies were still there, but Mickey wasn’t the same little kid that they had trampled all over when they were younger. He was a lot more confident and comfortable with who he was and more likely to at least have a verbal comeback ready for them, even if it led to a situation that a teacher had to break up. He just wasn’t going to hang his head and let it happen to him anymore. That was something that only became more rooted in him during his sixteenth year.
Danielle fell sick during the winter with what Jacob thought was just a bad case of the flu, but Marissa thought otherwise and took their daughter to the hospital. Danielle was quickly diagnosed with bacterial meningitis and rushed to the ICU while the rest of the family were examined for any signs of the illness. Danielle was in hospital for a little while and it was only once the doctors moved her to paediatrics for final observations. It was getting close to the holidays and Mickey caught a glimpse of the children who might actually spend Christmas confined to the ward and it almost broke his heart. He spoke to his dad about it and then, with a bit of help and persuasion he managed to get permission to put together a little plan. It was on the day of Danielle’s release that Mickey showed up in the costume he had worn on Halloween of that year; Batman. She almost couldn’t believe her older brother, but the other kids loved it. He had a small box of toy donations that the nurses were planning on giving out and made the rounds. Most of the kids couldn’t stop smiling as the superhero from the comics and the television paraded through the hospital putting on quite the show. It seemed like years of imagining himself as the character actually paid off for something! He had only thought about doing it as a one-time thing when they collected Danielle, but when a nurse mentioned that they needed a Santa Claus for the grotto, she refused to let him leave without saying yes.
After the Christmas, Mickey thought it would all be over, but once again the hospital contacted him with another request about Batman. One of the little boys who had been in before the holidays was turning six and had been asking if they could bring Batman back for his birthday. Who could say no? It seemed to spiral from there. A small, local paper caught wind of the teenager’s good deeds and came to the hospital to see him in action, asking a few questions and giving him a small article in that week’s edition. He mentioned having other old costumes and ideas and soon he was Superman, Spiderman, Wolverine…and then it turned from some of the heroes to kids wanting the villains to make appearances to liven the ward up. Mickey ended up having to play both The Joker and Batman in one session in what was essentially a tangle of tights in a wet room! He loved it and couldn’t turn down any of the invitations he had to go and cheer the kids up.
He couldn’t dress up and play entertainer forever, though. He had his own life to deal with. Seeing how important superheroes were to those sick children changed something in him. They could turn a bad day into a great one and it made Mickey so happy to bring that to them. Whenever the high school assholes tried to comment on him wearing a comic themed t-shirt to school or having a comic book in his bag, Mickey was a hell of a lot more confident with dealing with them. Plus, with the aid of growth spurts and finding a talent for gym class, he didn’t resemble the scrawny little kid who the bullies had once targeted. He wasn’t afraid to shove back anymore, jump in whenever other people were being picked on or speak up when someone was being unnecessarily cruel.
Since there was no chance of him being a masked vigilante for real, Mickey still needed to find something else to do with the rest of his life. He was good and actually enjoyed his language classes. He studied both German and Spanish during high school and made great grades in those classes. He didn’t really have a specific career goal in mind, but he figured there would always be someone in need of a translator or he could become a teacher himself one day. With nothing really set in stone, he thought them his best options for college and managed to find a university in New York that seemed to just call to him. He was surprised to discover that he could study both of the languages so long as he put in the hard work needed to stay on top of the level expected of him by his teachers.
With New York calling and after a sentimental farewell with his family, he made that nervous move and settled into the dorms at NYU. He got himself a job at WD-50 and with a letter from the staff at the previous hospital where he had kept the kids smiling, he was able to pick up the volunteering at a hospital in New York. The kids wanted the characters just as much and it gave Mickey another great chance to make new friends. College wasn’t quite like the movies, but it did have just as many parties and crazy antics! It took a little while to find a balance between everything but he managed to get a handle of things in his freshman year to make life easier. He studied abroad for his junior year, thrilled when he got to do a semester in Hamburg and then his second semester in Valencia.
Back in New York for his senior year, not very much has changed. His costume collection still takes up a rather surprising amount of his wardrobe, his comics are still in a case under his bed and he’s still just as ready for a party as he’s always been. He wouldn’t change anything about his life even if he had the chance!
