New York was everything Alick had hoped it would be. There were masses of people that she could talk to if she felt the desire to do so. Not only that, but there were tons of talented people in New York. The place was crawling with talent! Back in Texas, the closest thing you came to talent was beauty shows. Those were filled with Southern Belles whose talents included tap dancing or baton twirling, things that the average five-year-old could do. The saddest thing was, those girls' thought they actually had talent, when in reality, they were talentless airheads. You might ask why Alick knew so much about pageant shows if she disliked them so much, and the answer to that is simple: her step-sister was in one every few months. She was told she had to go in support of Tawny, though Tawny never went to any of Alick's performances. Fair? No. Nothing with Tatum and Tawny was fair. Alick learned that from early on, and she grew used to it.
But New York was her chance to get away from everything related to Tatum and Tawny and Texas in general. At first, Alick was afraid that she wouldn't be able to get into NYU's music program, but she passed with flying colors. She was super thankful to her theater and choir teachers for that. She asked them to make recommendations or whatever it was they had to do, and they gladly did. They knew she had the potential to make it somewhere in this world, and her chance started in New York.
The tiny girl was humming along to a Disney melody she had heard online. She was trying to be a little bit quieter today, but it wasn't working out so well. Alick's version of quiet was still an indoor voice. Her pace quickened as she noticed a familiar male figure. She considered the boy a friend, even if she had only met him a few times before.
"Cody!"
She shouted before wrapping her arms around his waist from behind, hugging him slightly before moving in front of him to look up at him. She had a giant grin on her face, glad to see him. He was a good guy, from what she had met so far. He was a little quieter, but so were most of her friends. Back in high school, she befriended one of the shiest people she had ever met, and he followed her around like a puppy-dog. She was sad when she left him, but she knew she had to do what was best for him, and she had told him he was always welcome in New York, if he wanted to go with her.

Cody had come to New York purely because of the architecture. The buildings were stunning, there was plenty of opportunity to learn about them, and NYU offered an excellent course for him. He might be from a quiet town, but he was used to the noise. The youngest of eight siblings, Cody had often ran away to try and find some peace and quiet, since it had been non-existent in their home. His parents had actually loved all the noise, the fights, and the hectic lifestyle that came with having so many kids, but Cody honestly had no idea how they had managed it. He had been dreaming of college for years, just for the chance to get a space of his own and finally move out of the family home. It wasn’t that he didn’t love his family, he did; they were just so different, so crazy, and there was little chance for peace when they were around because someone always had something to say.
So far, college life had been interesting. Cody had explored a few avenues, but for the most part he had kept his head down. He was still getting used to being away from home, and was enjoying the freedom he had now. Not to mention that he still loved coming home each night to the silence of his apartment. It was beautiful to hear nothing more than the scurrying of Thor and Loki in their cage, and know that if he did sit down to read a book or work on something in his sketchbook no one was going to barge on in and disturb him with their stories or problems from the day. Calls to home were scheduled for whenever he had the time to spare for them, and the beauty of cell phones meant that they could be silenced or ignored if Cody didn’t feel like socialising with other people. He was probably easily identified as a loner, but at the same time, he wasn’t a fan of being labelled as such an anti-social figure.
Coming out from his lecture, Cody was slowly making his way across the quad, contemplating what to get for lunch. Today he was done after a lecture and seminar in the morning, but he stuck around to make use of the campus amenities and because it was easier to pick up lunch than it was to cook it back at his apartment. He heard his name being called, but Cody almost jumped out of his skin when he felt the arms wrapping around him. He wasn’t big on the touchy-feely stuff, and it never really appealed to his germaphobe side at all, but he bit his tongue and went through with it for so many others who didn’t know about his quirky ways and habits. Cody wasn’t big on opening up about them either, so unless they happened upon him when he was feeling particularly finicky they just went unnoticed, or at least that was his intention. “Hey, Alick.” His voice was quiet, his smile small, but Cody was friendly all the same.

Sometimes Alick missed being back in Texas. She especially missed Casey, her best friend. She still talked to him on Skype and over the phone, but it wasn't the same. They had been friends since her sophomore year of high school, and they had been inseparable until she decided to move. He went to all of her plays and concerts, and they went to every dance together. Alick was never asked by anyone else because she was too loud and intimidated the boys, or so she liked to think. Casey, though, was too quiet to ask anyone. He normally just assumed he was going to go with Alick, and Alick was completely fine with that. She loved the blonde boy to death, and she really hoped he would come visit her soon. But, she was making new friends in this giant city.
Here, in New York, there were more people that were like Alick. They were loud and liked to talk a lot. They loved singing and dancing just as much as she did. Alick could actually blend in here, since there were so many people like her. She wasn't sure how she was going to enjoy blending in since she was used to standing out so much. But, on the other hand, it also meant she could make more friends with interests she had. Though, she still attracted (or was attracted to) the quieter people in the town. She wasn't sure what it was about them, but she wanted to be friends with them all. She wanted to make their lives happier and maybe break them from their shell.
"What are you up to?"
Alick asked Cody, looking up at him. She had a giant smile on her face, her thumbs hooked on the straps of her backpack.

Cody couldn’t really say that he missed Greenville. He didn’t even find himself missing the family he had left behind there. He was close with them all, but he was still enjoying the space from them. It was hard to figure out his life and what he wanted from it when there was only two minutes of peace before a brother or a sister wandered in demanding something, or with news to share with the family. Cody couldn’t be out of the house all of the time. There was a curfew, chores, and other things to abide by that required him to be indoors and putting up with the loudness, and the crowdedness of the home where all ten of them resided for so many years. It was only really now that they were starting to leave the nest, and he himself had no intention of a permanent return.
New York might have been a city known for its constant hustle and bustle, but Cody at least had his own space there. It was a modest apartment, but at the end of each day he knew that there was no one about to barge into his bedroom and wake him up, or come thundering in shouting and screaming when he was trying to concentrate on the work he had to complete before his next class. The noise of the city he could cope with, and even the few friends he had could understand if he turned down their offers for socialising just because he didn’t feel like it. That wasn’t exactly a choice he had with family. His family was just always there, unavoidable at every turn and around when he least wanted them to be.
Shoving his hands into his pockets, Cody walked along with a hint of a smile on his lips. “I’m about to grab some lunch.” He answered simply. Cody never proclaimed to lead an exciting life, hell, mediocre barely cut it for him. He was a very simplistic guy and he didn’t exactly do anything that people could exclaim was thrilling or amazing. He just coasted through each day and enjoyed his own company a little more than most in New York City probably did. He wasn’t anything incredible and he never really wanted to be. He had his ambitions in life, but he wasn’t about to jump for the stars to make them happen. He’d take his time and climb that ladder carefully, harness and safety net in place. “How about you?” He spoke quietly, barely audible over the noise of the rest of the students passing by.

Alick knew she could come off as an airhead who just liked to hear herself talk, but only half of that statement was true. Alick had a brilliant brain in her little head. She was observant, and she knew what made people tick. She knew that Cody didn't like talking much, and she also knew that he was a little on the awkward side. But she didn't want to acknowledge that. She wanted to treat him like a person still, even if he was a little bland at times. She wanted to make his life a little more exciting, even if that meant she had to do all the talking, which is something she loved to do. Yes, Alick loved hearing herself talk. She could talk to herself all day, but that was kind of frowned upon in today's society. She would probably be sent for evaluation at a mental hospital. She didn't think she would be committed into one, but what did she know about mental health? For all she knew, she was a sociopath who was even lying to herself about it. She wasn't, but wouldn't that be something?
"Mind if I join you? I could use a ... well, I could use anything, really."
She asked, already inviting herself along. She had been so caught up in the new song she heard online last night that she hadn't thought about if she were hungry or not, but as soon as he mentioned lunch, her stomach rumbled. She had a tiny breakfast of a granola bar, so of course she was starving by now.
"I just got done with class until about two today."
She answered him.
"Oh! And I was about to buy tickets to see Pentatonix later this year. Do you want to go with me? They're fabulous! I think you might love them. Then again, I'm pretty biased about them. By the way, you look super cute in red. I love that shirt on you." **************************************************************************

Cody liked his ways. He was content with his life, which seemed to surprise people. He didn’t want the big city to change him. He didn’t need to go out night after night, or any night at all really. He was quite happy with a peaceful existence. He knew most kids today couldn’t wait to hit up a dance floor or the next big college party, but those scenes weren’t in the slightest bit appealing to him. He didn’t even feel inclined to check them out once just for the experience. He already knew that he wouldn’t like them. There was just too much about them that went in his ‘do not like’ column of life, and not enough existed to balance it out. It would be an uncomfortable waste of time, and Cody would rather be productive with other things instead.
“Sure. Come along if you want.” He said with a small shrug. He often ate alone during the school day just because the few friends he did have didn’t always have the same the same days in as he did, or when they did they weren’t always available for the same lunch break. Cody didn’t mind his own company though; he often preferred it. That was one of the side effects of growing up with seven siblings who were all very much larger than life characters.
Cody crinkled his nose at the very thought of a concert, or a band in general. The only way he enjoy music was quietly through his headphones. He hated loud music, despised crowds, and the thought of being in a grimy venue with strangers honestly made him want to die a little. He liked things to be clean and tidy, and to him silence really was golden. “Um, no, not really, sorry. It’s not my sort of thing.” Cody wasn’t comfortable in places where there were drink stains on the floor and people getting sticky and sweaty all around him. He didn’t like being stuck in a crowd when it was unavoidable so there was no way in hell he was going to be in one by choice. He’d rather gauge his own eyes out with a 6B. “Uh, thanks.” It was just a shirt he’d been given for Christmas, a present from one of his many siblings.
