SECRETS: Chuck ran away from home at twelve to escape an abusive step-father. He stayed with a distant cousin who changed his name and then he vanished when he was old enough to look after himself. For all intents and purposes, he’s still a missing person on file somewhere.
PERSONALITY: Chuck is a private guy who keeps to himself most of the time. He’s friendly, but closed off from most people so that he can protect himself. He’s funny but dry witted and spends a lot of his time just in his own company because that’s when he feels safest. Quiet, Chuck is confident but doesn’t really let it show unless it’s necessary. He’s a strong young man, but sometimes suffers from nightmares from his past or fears that he might actually be found again. He’s grown up but he doesn’t want to go home or face the things he ran away from. He’s not aggressive, in fact he’s scared of developing a temper of any kind because of everything he grew up with. A calm man, Chuck is the type to run away from conflict rather than deal with it, which had kind of been his routine since his childhood. As for romance, he’s not great. He’s brilliant as being a flirt, but because of his closed off nature Chuck struggles to keep a woman in his life because it doesn’t take long for them to realise that he’s hiding something, being secretive about his life, and that most of the relationship is a one sided sort of thing when it comes to sharing. Chuck would like to find someone someday, but he’s still fearful about his past and anyone ever finding out who he really is and what he did.MOTHER: Vivienne Lily Francome, 49.

HISTORY: Vivienne was known in her locale for being easy and it wasn’t uncommon for her to take random men home with her after an evening at some of the local bars in the city. So, when she fell pregnant at twenty-four many people were surprised it actually hadn’t happened sooner. Vivienne didn’t know who the father was and to be frank she didn’t care. She didn’t want a relationship with any of the three men who could potentially be the father of her unborn child. Despite her lifestyle she wanted more in a relationship than a life with a man she picked up in some dive bar in downtown San Antonio. Many people thought her trashy and a wreck for what she was doing and how ill prepared she was to bring a child into this world, but Vivienne didn’t care. She brought her son into the world on a cold night and named him after her own late father; Charlie.
For the first few years, Charlie lived with his mother but was raised mostly by neighbours who would take care of him while Vivienne went out to ‘work’. Work for Vivienne entailed cleaning for a few hours and then hitting a bar or two with friends. Having a child didn’t change how Vivienne lived her life one bit, and Charlie often felt confused as to why his mommy didn’t stay around to play with him or tuck him in at night. He didn’t have the life most other children had and he wanted it more than anything. He wanted a mommy and a daddy to go to the park with and play games with. He thought he might have that wish when Vivienne met Gordon Francome and eloped with him to Las Vegas one weekend. They came back married and moved into a house at the end of a street just outside of the nicer part of town. In other words Charlie moved from one dump into a bugger dump.
At first no one really thought anything of anything. Charlie was still handed to anyone who would look after him whilst Vivienne and Gordon went out and partied with friends. Most of the time his babysitter was his cousin Rushton who was from Vermont but had moved to Texas to work in the family business; a family that had disowned Vivienne a long time ago. Rushton had a big heart though, and he didn’t see why Charlie should suffer for the state of his mother. It was only when Charlie was eight that Gordon began picking on him. At first it was verbal put downs, but over time the abuse turned physical and Vivienne did nothing to stop it. In fact, she barely cared about her son at all.
Charlie was twelve when he suffered the worst beating of his life. Rushton then decided that he couldn’t sit back anymore. He might have come to Texas for work, but it was time to get out of the state and take Charlie with him. He knew it would be breaking the law to just take him, but he had plans in place, and had it all worked out. He told Charlie and the pair took off in the dead of night, heading north towards Canada. Rushton explained to Charlie that he had a new passport, a new name and that he was never going back to that horrible home again. It was from that moment that he became Chuck. And Chuck was terrified at first, especially when their first week in Montreal he saw a news report that declared him a missing child. There was even a heartfelt plea from his mom and step-father for him to come home.
Chuck spent his teenage years in Montreal terrified that he might be caught. Rushton took measures to change his appearances from the moment they arrived before enrolling him in a school, cutting his hair and getting him braces and swapping his glasses for contact lenses; small things, but together they worked to make him look like a totally different kid. Rushton raised Chuck as his nephew for those who asked, claiming guardianship after the death of his parents. As Chuck grew older he came to realise that Rushton had been the only person who had ever really cared for him when he was growing up as a kid. For their safety, Chuck spent most of his teenage years keeping to himself and staying away from any situation that could put him in the spotlight. It was best for everyone and he was content to just be away from Texas.
After his eighteenth birthday, Chuck announced that he wanted to return to America, but not to the south. Rushton was worried, but as Chuck was eighteen there was nothing anyone could really do to him. He went to New York and enrolled in culinary school since cooking was his passion. He kept living under the alias, only changing his middle name to honour the man who had saved him from a life of hell. Working hard in New York, he remained his true self a secret and graduated culinary school. It was only after his twenty-first birthday that he chose to look to see what became of his missing status. There will photo fits of what he might have looked like, and posters on the internet, along with messages from a mother and step-father he couldn’t buy into because he knew they would never care for him the way they made out to. They probably thrived off the publicity though, the attention it got them. He didn’t ever want to be found because he knew it would land Rushton in trouble more than it would him and Rushton had done so much for him.
Instead he kept his head down in New York and worked hard at just trying to live his life. After training in a few places he landed a job as chef at WD-40 and remains there to this day. He still carries his secrets on his shoulders, but Chuck wants to look to the future, not his past.
