CAIUS JASON KEAULANA

NICKNAMES: None.
AGE: Thirty-three
GENDER: Male
SEXUALITY: Straight.
STATUS: Single.
GROUP: Citizen.
GRADE: N/A.
MAJOR: N/A.
JOB OCCUPATION: Anthropology Professor.HAIR: Dark brown and though he does occasionally cut it short, he tends to prefer growing it out. He once wore dreadlocks, but feels he’s past that age now and instead just lets it do what it naturally wants to do.
EYES: Green.
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: There’s a scar in his eyebrow from a fight when he was in college. It was a bad one and some guy smashed him in the face with a glass. Caius needed surgery and stitches to fix him up, but that scar remained.
TATTOOS: Rows of triangles represent sharks teeth for when he’s in the water on his left arm. ‘Bride of Gypsies’ for his mother on his right arm in very loose text. A small skull is between his thumb and index finger on his right hand, and there’s the name of one of his friend’s ‘diablo’ down his right middle finger in memory of him after he died.
PIERCINGS: None.
PLAY-BY: Jason Momoa!LIKES: surfing, the summer, bottled beer, fishing, going home, travelling, research papers, his private gym, rollercoasters, calling his mom and grandmother, fresh sheets, teaching, sharks, chatting with neighbours, card games, parties, the ocean, boating, dating, spaghetti, apple crumble, lifetime movies, fresh cut flowers.
DISLIKES: His mom or grandmother being upset, energy drinks, sore throats, failing a student, dry skin, shaving, snow, infomercials, struggling to meet deadlines, the colour pink, lemon scented cleaning products, remembering the time he broke his leg, being a hospital patient, feeling stressed, hurtful lies, cheaters..
FEARS: never surfing again, losing his sight, beetles.
SECRETS: Caius has never settled down because no woman has impressed his mother. It might seem ridiculous, but to him his mother’s opinion means everything since she raised him and taught him just about everything he knows.
PERSONALITY: Caius might appear intimidating given his size and stature, but he’s a big softie for the most part. To be honest, he’s not even someone you might expect to find teaching at a university, but Caius enjoys it. He’s an outdoors man most of the time, and very passionate about most of his hobbies and his history. He’s proud of his heritage and he’s not ashamed to be close to his mom and grandmother. Excitable at times, it can be amusing to see a 6’5 man of his size reduced to a giddy mess when something he likes happens. He’s a laidback guy who loves to head out of the city for surfing weekends or fishing escapes whenever he can. A generous man, Caius will do what he can to help people out, including the students in his classes, though he’s also a fair professor and won’t let himself be taken for a ride by those who think they can blag an extension from him each month. He’s not aggressive by any means, but he’s protective of the people he cares about, especially the women in his life, and he will do whatever he can to ensure that they are safe. Thankfully he usually just has to walk on over and anyone bothering them will back off before he needs opens his mouth, but Caius will go further if he has to in order to defend those he is close to. When it comes to romance, his mother’s opinion is important to him. It has cost him some relationships, but he feels like the right woman will understand. Until then though, Caius can be a bit of a flirt and he certainly offers women that ideal strong man to take care of them if that is what they want. He’s sweet and affectionate though when the right person comes along, and can spoil them rotten without even realising it.MOTHER: Alani Keaulana, 60.
FATHER: Ikaika Kalama, 64.
SIBLINGS: None.
OTHERS: Iona Keaulana, 80, maternal grandmother.
PETS: Kane and Laka, Basenji’s of two!
HOMETOWN: Laie, Hawaii.
HISTORY: Ikaika and Alani only had a brief relationship when their paths crossed during a hot summer in Laie. Ikaika was from Honolulu originally, but he was in Laie for the wedding of his best friend. It was a small affair, but it was catered for by the company Alani worked for. She was a waitress and she was swept away by Ikaika and how handsome he was. Ikaika was only in the town for a little over a week, but that was long enough for a brief summer romance. It was also plenty of time for Alani to fall pregnant, but by the time she realised that she was carrying Ikaika’s child he was long gone and she was back to living her life with him as nothing more than a fond memory. She dreaded telling her mother the news, but Iona was supportive of her daughter, and having lost her own husband in the two years before she was keen to have something else to focus on; a grandchild would be the perfect distraction, even if the child didn’t come into the world in the way Iona had always thought.
Caius was born in the middle of the night, and Iona said from the start that meant he would be a head turner. She wasn’t entirely wrong either. He was a handful as a baby, but Alani adapted to motherhood well, and with the help of Iona Caius quickly learnt all the things that could come from a loving, warm family. He might have been missing out on the father figure in his life, but Caius never really minded that. He asked his mom a couple of times why he didn’t have a dad, but Alani waited until he was twelve before telling him the full story. She was afraid Caius might hate her, might despise her for having such a casual fling with the man who was biologically his father, but Caius just nodded his head and gave her a hug. His father didn’t know he even existed, but Caius couldn’t blame either of them for that. It had been one of those things and when he was older and started dating girls he started being able to understand how something so short lived might actually have been something so special. Alani always mentioned Ikaika, and he could see that her father had been someone special to her. Caius would even go as far to say that she still loved him in some way, even if she hadn’t seen him in over a decade.
At school, Caius hung about with one group of close friends. It was mostly the kids who were native to the island like him, with families who history was deeply rooted within the islands. They were all keen surfers who took to fishing when they were teenagers to make some extra cash down at the market. They kept to themselves and stayed out of trouble, and were a popular hit with the local girls. Tall, fit boys who were island natives, they also appealed to the teenage daughters of tourists who visited Hawaii, though after discovering the story of his conception, Caius left those sort of relationships to his friends.
It was his passion for his native heritage that drove him to study anthropology at university. He stayed close to home for school, not only to be near his mom and grandmother, but also to be near his friends. Not all of them were taking the academic route, but were going into family business, or local trades. Caius got through college relatively unscathed. The exception was a bar fight he didn’t want to be a part of which left him carrying a scar in his eyebrow and as a hospital patient for a little over a week while doctors patched his face back together. Once his friends knew he was going to be okay, they teased him senseless about being his height and size and having plastic surgery. Caius laughed with them because there was very little else he could do about it then.
After graduating, Caius joined a research team that was travelling with some archaeology teams to take note of and explore some of the corners of the globe that were not as well known about back then. Caius had a couple of papers published from then, and by the time he finally returned to the states he was ready for something a little more settled in life. He was twenty-seven when he returned, had seen plenty of things and now fancied passing that knowledge on. It was NYU that actually came to him and offered him a position before he could even think about leaving Hawaii. At first he was apprehensive about considering somewhere so far from home, but his mom talked him into accepting the position. It was a great pay, a wonderful opportunity, and she pointed out that they had reached out to him.
Caius moved to New York City in time for the following semester, and settled in to a nice apartment there. He took to teaching like a duck to water, and the students seemed to love his classes. He took an informal approach to teaching compared to some, but Caius liked it that way since the students seemed to approach him more that way. He had been told throughout his life that his appearance was intimidating so he did what he could do show that he was actually the total opposite.
It’s been six years of teaching now and he’s not tiring of it. The only thing his mom would like for him now is to find a woman to spend his life with. The closest Caius has come to that is the two dogs he owns now so that coming home isn’t quite such a quiet ordeal. He’s not in a rush to find the happy ending, but he would like to meet someone sooner rather than later since it’ll make his mom, and grandmother happy.
