SECRETS: Archie was in a car crash with his then girlfriend and some friends when he was seventeen. Most involved either ended up severely injured or dead. The trauma from it left Archie a recluse for two years and he was in a deep depression for a long time until finally he realised he needed to keep going if only to honour the memories of his friends.
PERSONALITY: Archie is naturally a nervous kind of guy. He’s not wholly confident and never has been. He’s used to being a face at the back of the crowd, someone forgettable. He’s shy and often keeps to himself to avoid any unnecessary embarrassment. Clever, Archie is a victim of his own mind and the torment in there that still haunts him from the night of the crash. He’s got a head for numbers, and that is pretty much the only thing he’s salvaged since bringing himself back out of his shell to live his life. The rest of him still hides away, fearful of just about anything that reminds him of the night when his life changed so dramatically. He’s restless because of it, unable to sleep most nights without a television on in the bedroom to distract him from his own thoughts and memories. He’s mostly a simple loving kind of guy who doesn’t want a great deal of things from life. Sorrowful, Archie has struggled to move on from the pain in his past, even with the treatment of doctors and medication. He’s strong, but at the same time he wears his emotions on his sleeve for the world to see. He’s never been aggressive and probably never would be. His anger manifests in sorrow, and shamefully he breaks down whenever he feels too annoyed. Since the loss of his girlfriend back when he was seventeen, Archie hasn’t been able to date again. He’s never been great with women and he’s always extra nervous around those who he finds pretty. Still, he’s struggled to move on from her death and still feels like he’s grieving.MOTHER: Ethel Harriet Holtzmann, 58.

HISTORY: Ivan was a fashion photographer who was getting his start in Dusseldorf. He met Ethel when she flew in with her boss. She was a stressed out PA who was desperate for some kind of escape and she found it with Ivan. He swept her off her feet, treated her like royalty and gave her everything she could ever dream of. It was love at first sight almost, and when it came time for Ethel to leave she handed in her notice and chose to stay in Germany with Ivan. She learnt the language and soon enough their little whirlwind romance resulted in the birth of a bouncing baby girl. They married when she was three, with both mother and daughter in dresses provided by designers who were close friends of the family. Two years later Archie was born, and he later would joke that as the son of a German man and a Scottish woman he was bound to grow up with the worst accent in the world.
Archie was nothing like his big sister. Delilah was bright and bubbly and he was shy and reserved. Nothing could change that and he grew up that way. No one could bring him out of his shell and he was happiest on his own for the most part. When it came to attending school Archie stayed in the back of class trying to avoid almost anything that was asked of him. The only class he ever enjoyed was mathematics. He had a natural talent for understanding the numbers and it was his best class. Nothing brought him out of his shell though, and Archie liked keeping to himself. He stayed that way for most of his childhood.
It was only when the family moved to LA when Ivan got a better job with a fashion magazine that Archie’s life began to change. It was at his new school that he was partnered with Rachel Brinksman on his first day for her to show him around. She was stunning to him and he practically tripped over himself all of the time he was with her. She found it adorable. Archie was sixteen at the time and Rachel soon realised that if she wanted anything from him she would have to be the one to make the first move; which she did. She made it quite clear to Archie that she was interested in him with a kiss just before the winter formal. He was stunned, but over the moon at the same time. When he started dating Rachel he also started hanging out with her friends. Rachel wasn’t part of a huge crowd, but there were six or seven people who she was close to at the school and they considered Archie one of their buddies too.
Archie was with Rachel and three other of their friends a year later. They were driving back from a concert, with one of the guys in the front seat while Archie was trying to teach them German from the back. It was silly fun, harmless after a night of listening to one of their favourite bands. It was another driver running a red light, and driving at a dangerous speed who caused the crash. Archie can remember none of it, but just recalls coming to and finding himself upside down in the car, strapped in, but showered in glass and blood. He was in agony, but the emergency services were already on the scene and he blacked out again before too much could be done. When he awoke again he was in a hospital bed. His parents had bloodshot eyes and Delilah had come home from Florida where she was at university. It was then that Archie knew it was bad news. His dad told him that he had escaped with a few busted ribs, a mild concussion and some lacerations that would heal in time. The guy in the passenger seat had some internal injuries but had pulled through surgery with a broken leg to see him off home. Archie asked about Rachel and his mother burst into tears. His dad took his hand and broke the news to him that Rachel had died on the way to the hospital from internal injuries. The driver was pronounced dead as the scene, killed by some debris from the truck that had hit them. The final passenger in the car was alive, but had lost his left arm. The driver of the other vehicle was alive, but currently on life support. It was too much, and Archie immediately blacked out again.
When he came to he was a different person. He wouldn’t speak to anyone, do anything, or listen to anyone. He didn’t want visitors at the hospital or at home, and he completed his high school education from the comfort of his bedroom; a place he never left apart from when he needed the bathroom. The doctors came to see him and explained that it was common with people who went through something like this, but that didn’t stop his parent’s worrying. Archie wound up on a cocktail of medication to help him out, but he rarely took them, not seeing the point in getting better when he had nothing and no one to get better for.
Even after high school, Archie remained hidden away in his room. His grief overwhelmed him. Even when the driver of the truck pulled through and was later sentenced for vehicular homicide, he couldn’t bring himself to care. It was only after he had a dream of Rachel when he was twenty-one that he realised he needed to carry on with his life. Dreaming of her wasn’t uncommon, but there had been something about this one that was different. The details were hazy come the following morning, but he just knew in his heart that no matter how tough it was he needed to do it. He began applying for colleges away from LA. If he was ever going to stand a chance of seeing this through he needed to get away from everything that could and would remind him of Rachel and the friends he had lost that night.
That was how he ended up in New York City. He got a job, an apartment and went to study the only thing he had ever cared about; maths. A sophomore now, he’s trying to pick up the pieces and find a way through the mess his life became after the death of his friends. It’s hard, sometimes it seems impossible, but Archie wants to do it; for them if not for himself.
