HISTORY: Kenneth had never been a well behaved man, not even when he was a young boy. He was always up to no good, and by the time he was a young man, he was wanted in several states, but never under his real name. A con-man, trained by his own father, Kenneth knew best how to play the game. When he met Grace, he played her like all the rest, but had a little more fun, and took a little more time. She wasn’t a complete fool though, and when she realised she was pregnant, and that he was far from an honourable man, she demanded that he marry her, or else she’d tell the police everything she knew about him. He wasn’t entirely trapped and he could make a clean escape if he so wanted to, but the thought of having a child of his own was enticing to him. So, he married Grace, and together they put on the front of a clean, happy young couple, though it was far from the truth. They moved to Provo, Utah, and there Kenneth continued to work his jobs and Grace played the domestic housewife as cover. She thought it would be fun, a thrill that no one else could share with her, but when Jebediah was born, it all suddenly lost its charm. She wanted more than to be the doting housewife, but Kenneth never told her anything about his jobs or his plans. She was always just expected to behave and play her part well.
Grace raised Jeb alone for the most part up until the little boy was six. Then she had had enough. She was tired of being second to everything. When Kenneth came home from his jobs he would ask only about Jeb, and never about Grace. If something went wrong and they had to up and move then he never stopped to ask Grace about her thoughts or feelings. He just told her that they were going and that was that. So, she left Jeb with a neighbour one afternoon and said she needed to run out for something. Only, Grace never came back. Kenneth came home that evening and found a note, a little boy confused, and a neighbour kind of pissed off about being left in the lurch for four hours. In her note Grace promised not to breathe a word about Kenneth’s life, only because she knew she could be charged as an accomplice after all these years. However, that wasn’t enough for Kenneth. He took Jeb and in the middle of the night they left.
For years to come that was their life. Kenneth worked the jobs and schemes, conning people out of everything and then upping and moving with Jeb. Jeb ultimately lost track of how many lies he told to neighbours and friends, or how many schools he attended. When people asked he told them his dad was a corporate salesman and that his job meant that they had to move around a lot. He hated it, but Kenneth wouldn’t change. He wanted to impart his wisdom onto Jeb, but Jeb was far from the son he had dreamt of. He worked hard in school to keep up good grades despite all of the moving, and when Jeb began to realise that he was attracted to both guys and dolls, he had no idea of how he would tell his dad. In the end, Kenneth caught him with his first boyfriend when he came home early one day from a botched job. Jeb was sixteen, and they were just kissing instead of watching the movie they had put on, but it destroyed Kenneth. After that all hope he had of Jeb following in his footsteps went out of the window. It wasn’t that he was against Jeb being bisexual, but at the same time he couldn’t be entirely comfortable with it, though Jeb did see his father trying.
It drove them apart, though it wasn’t what father or son wanted. They sort of went about their lives separately, but awkwardly tried to remain close. It was difficult and Jeb even stayed at home after high school to work for a few years to save up some money for college. Kenneth supported his decision to go to college, and he set about trying to repair his relationship with his son. The bond was never really there again, but they managed to forge something. Jeb could never truly support what his father did, but there was enough love there that he would never betray him either.
So, Jeb went to New York, attending NYU and studying to become a pharmacist. It was a hard subject to major in, but he had worked hard his whole life and wanted to continue pushing himself in that direction. Three years later he was a supervisor in the campus sandwich shop where he had worked from his first week as a student, and one of the top students in his class. He had formed a thriving social life and for the first time in his entire life he had a stable home, and really felt settled in New York City. Nothing could take that from him, and Jeb actually found himself looking forward to the future.
