SELENA FRANCES GIBBS
FULL NAME: Selena Frances Gibbs.
NICKNAMES: Lena.
AGE: Twenty-one.
GENDER: Female.
SEXUALITY: Straight.
STATUS: Single.
GROUP: Student.
GRADE: Junior.
MAJOR: Photography & Fashion.
JOB OCCUPATION: Forbidden Planet Assistant.HAIR: Naturally her hair is dark brown, but she’s been fond of a dyeing it a red shade ever since she was fourteen. It’s usually just past her shoulders, but Selena will cut it to just below her jaw every once in a while and then let it grow back out again.
EYES: Dark brown.
SCARS/BIRTHMARKS: Most of her scars are tiny things, childhood reminders of why she shouldn’t run head first into things she can’t handle.
TATTOOS: None just yet, but she wants one.
PIERCINGS: She has fourteen in total. Her lip, tongue, and belly button. And then right lobe three times along with her rook and helix. In her left ear she has the lobe three times, a daith, snug and tragus.
PLAY-BY: Kathryn Prescott!LIKES: photography, fashion design, sewing, loud music, dancing, raspberry, Korean food, Cherry coke, dark rooms, exhibitions, her sewing machine, zombies, movie nights, toffee muffins, bonfires, going out with friends, horror movies, hats, parties, winter, ice cream, chai tea, collectibles, tattoo parlours, student bars, singing.
DISLIKES: Fighting, lies, when Taekhoon has a bad episode, watching the news, headaches, getting sick, thunderstorms, rats, custard, sandals, dark chocolate, blue pens, horses, hangovers, deadlines, long shifts, waking up before her alarm, bad wi-fi, country music, hiccups, long skirts.
FEARS: rats, losing Hanbyul, enclosed spaces.
SECRETS: She’s confused and a little bit scared by her feelings for Taekhoon. She doesn’t want to lose him as a friend but the thought of him being anything more is just too terrifying for her to face up to. So, instead, she acts like those feelings don’t exist and she ignores them the best she can. Plus, since she lives with the family she thinks it would only make things awkward if something was to be said/happen. Selena just doesn’t want things to change from what they are, even if they could turn out to be something greater.
PERSONALITY: If her appearance wasn’t enough to suggest it already, Selena is quite a bold character. She’s confident most of the time and probably a little on the kooky side at times, too. She has an outgoing personality, but sometimes her overall personality can be a little too much to handle, which is why her friendship group is smaller rather than larger. She’s energetic, somewhat nonsensical at times, and caring, but at the same time, Selena can be quite blunt. She won’t be eternally sympathetic and she won’t pity those who have brought something on themselves. In certain situations she’ll tell it straight and reveal a slightly pushy temperament that isn’t always the nicest side to her. She’s open minded and a rather accepting young woman who can be great to have on side in an argument. However, she’s not all that fun when she’s the one angry since Selena can easily hold her own and she’s too stubborn to back down. She doesn’t enjoy fighting, not with strangers and especially not with friends, but she won’t be used as a doormat or someone’s punch bag. She won’t let others be used that way either, frequently stepping in to help those in need out. Romantically, Selena has some kind of feeling for her best friend, but in every attempt to ignore them, she’ll date other guys. She’s coy, a little bit flirty after a drink or two, but she’s only had maybe two serious boyfriends before now. Feelings ultimately leave her scared and she thinks someone can fix that and make it all better, which she knows sounds ridiculous, but it’s what she wants.MOTHER: Charlotte Marie Gibbs, 56.

HISTORY: Charlotte and Arthur met when they were young, through friends who thought they’d be just perfect together. They were perfect together, but they also wanted the rest of their lives to be perfect. That meant waiting to have the big white wedding, waiting to have the children that followed. They wanted the stable careers and financial security first, and only when a promotion in the accountancy firm provided that for Arthur, did they think about their happily ever after. Once they started thinking about it, they finally got around to living it out. Selena was their first born child; a healthy, happy baby girl who was born in the bleak mid-winter when New York was complaining about the snow and the ice, as well as just about everything else that New York usually had to complain about.
When Selena was four, she gained a little brother, Wesley. He was the little brother she would torment as much as he would torment her, but ultimately they were close and there for each other. This happened mostly because Charlotte insisted that they be as good a set of friends as it was possible for the siblings to be. However, as siblings, they also felt they had a duty to tease and annoy the other relentlessly from time to time, or else where was the fun in everything?
Growing up, things were a little different for Selena. The family travelled for their summer vacations, so she became aware of the different cultures around the world, and usually adopted aspects from certain ones into her style or her hobbies. This made her different from the other kids, and as such, pushed her to the outskirts in the classroom. She wasn’t weak enough to be targeted by the bullies since when one tried, an eight year old Selena kicked him in the back of the knees and pushed his face into a muddy puddle. However she was also too strange for most of the children who were forming the popular clique long before high school was even in their line of sight. As such she was something of an outcast, but at the same time she was okay with that, because she got to be herself and enjoy what she liked.
That carried on throughout school, unfortunately. Well, Selena didn’t really care too much about it. The summer before high school saw the Gibbs family travel to Korea in another one of their unique vacations. Selena loved the culture and came home besotted with just about everything. She began submerging herself into it more and more when she was at home and it was just another thing for the teenagers to find weird about her at school. Not that it really mattered to her. She knew she lived on the fringe and that her life was different to the rest of the kids at her school since she wasn’t the ‘norm’. However, Selena had developed a quick reputation for being the one who stood up for all things different and who enjoyed being on her own if that was how things had to be via the ridiculous rules of high school hierarchy. Anyway, the sophomore year of high school changed a few things. This was when she met Taekhoon Kim. He sat next to her on his first day and whilst holding back every desire to just scream in his face, she introduced herself in poor Korean. They bonded over her obsession with his culture and became fast friends.
When he revealed the truth about his schizophrenia, nothing changed for Selena. She still saw him as her best friend. Plus, she knew very little about the condition other than what she had seen on TV or heard in the news. As far as she was concerned Taekhoon was still the same kid who had sat next to her on that first day. It was a little scary, but she thought she hid any worries she did have well, at least until she learnt enough to relax about them. They became closer than ever after that and nothing could break them apart, although she joked that by sitting next to her he had thrown away his chance of a normal high school life.
When Selena was just about to turn eighteen, her family gave her the news that changed her life. Arthur’s company was extending to the west coast and Arthur was to head up a department there. It would re-locate them to LA. Selena loathed the idea, kicked and screamed for the first time in her life about how it was unfair to do this during her senior year. Uprooting her life at this point wasn’t an option. Plus, she didn’t want to leave Taekhoon. When she broke the news to him, she was beyond emotional, but that turned into shock and surprise when his family offered her the spare room in their home. It took some talking over with her parents, but they ultimately let her stay in NYC and move in with Taekhoon and his family.
After high school, Selena went to NYU where she double majored in photography and fashion. Taekhoon joined her there, but after he dropped out, she made friends from around the campus; friends who she introduced to him as soon as she could. He was important, he mattered, and she wanted them to all be together, rather than divided. She understood Taekhoon’s reasons for dropping out when he did, but she doesn’t want him to feel like his schizophrenia has to hold him back for the rest of his life. She feels like college is the greatest thing to ever happen to her and she would love it if he could one day share that experience, too, or at least find something to give him that same feeling.
