New York was a scary place for Avery; scarier for her than most. It felt like at any minute the people she'd been running from would be knocking at her door, just waiting to drag her back to Pennsylvania and the life she'd been taken from. When she'd been deciding on where to go to school, she hadn't thought for a second about the implications until after the fact. But she had also thought at that point that since she had been out of the country for so long they would have given up on her. At least that was what she hoped for. However she had been making it work for her. She called Jordan every day and kept up texting him a dozen times a day. So much so the friends she had made thought she was texting her boyfriend not her uncle. She joked about how he was super protective and didn't like that she moved from Switzerland for school but she usually kept it at that.
It didn't do to tell too many people the truth. The more she could keep to herself the better and the safer her friends would be. It might have been a little on the crazy side but Avery liked her new friends, she didn't want anything bad to happen to them; especially because of her. As it was she kept her distance just in case something happened and watched her back at every turn. It was bad enough she never took the same way anywhere twice and always doubled back at least twice when she was going anywhere to lose any tails she might have acquired. Someone might have called her paranoid but she wasn't willing to be taken back to Pennsylvania any time soon. As it was, the second she was done school and anything else she needed to do, she was going back to Berne and her uncle. Avery had wanted some time to spread her wings but she thought four years in one place in the United States was more than enough and probably pushing her luck.
With Christmas around the corner she would be hopping on a plane back to Switzerland and her uncle for a couple weeks of blissful relaxation and catching up with old friends. Skype was good but it wasn't in person. It wasn't sitting at a cute little cafe with hot chocolate or mochas, gossiping about all the time they'd missed in each other’s lives. Avery missed that with her best friends back home. She was out now, shopping before her shift at O'Malley's for her uncle's Christmas gift and a couple things she knew her friends would love back home that she had never seen in the shops in Berne. Rosalind would love the little trinkets she picked up for the energetic brunette Avery had grown up next door to since they'd moved to Switzerland. And Magda would be so giddy to get the silly little things she'd gotten in the "little" districts. Magda was obsessed with Little Italy, Little Roma and China Town. Avery still didn't understand why but she made the effort to go to every neighborhood that represented a country and picked something up. Later she would put it all in a gift bag and tell her she travelled the world and never left the city; just for her.
