PERSONALITY: Marcus isn’t anything like a lawyer should be. He has those traits, that stubborn to the core determined side, but he’s also sweet and loyal. He won’t give an inch in anything when he knows he’s right. Not willing to start a fight, Mark will gladly finish one. Though he prefers words over fists, he won’t back down, won’t cower away. That pesky trait gets in the way a lot and had him on the receiving end of a few fists in high school. But he was also that popular guy in high school with the charming grin and baby blues to get lost in. He doesn’t have a temper to speak of but on the rare days he’s a little under the weather, Marcus puts his athletic past to good use with hours long workouts and laps in the pool. He’s not especially serious by nature, but when he’s on the clock, he’s like a different person. Off the clock, he can be pretty funny. Marcus is a calm, collected guy who doesn’t rise to the bait when it’s dangling over his head. Even more sarcastic with drinks poured down his throat, Marcus can’t help himself, he just can’t hold his tongue when he sees something wrong. Mechanically gifted, he’s been fixing his own car since he was six years old and rebuilt an old engine with his dad. He’s not what he would call flirtatious, but he knows how to get the answers he wants.

HISTORY: There wasn’t anything special about family life growing up for Marcus. There were trips to the park, sports to play and friends to hang out with. Judy worked out of their home as an accountant while his father spent his days under the hoods of cars. Steve co-owned the auto body shop with his brother and thought that one day, their children would follow in their footsteps. And that was true for the most part. Marcus, his brother and their three cousins all worked there throughout high school, leaving long enough to go to college, providing they didn’t chose to stay local and go to the community college. Marcus was the oldest on his side; he was also the one least intrigued by the inner workings of the car he drove. But he wanted his father to be proud of him, so he stayed working, collecting a modest pay for what he could do. It worked for a while and it kept him busy, out of trouble.
But it had never been what Marcus wanted. As much as he enjoyed getting under the hood and rebuilding that ’69 Mustang GT with his dad, it didn’t grab him and pull him in. Throughout high school, Marcus tried all sorts of different classes, trying to find what would grab him like he’d wanted. It wasn’t until the second half of his junior year that he found what he was looking for; law. And he was good at it. From there, he joined a few teams and groups with the school to advance his skill set. He didn’t tell his father at first, he didn’t know how to really. But he knew. During the summer before his senior year, Steve and Marcus were working on the GT, finishing up the loose ends so he would be able to drive it to school; Steve breached the subject of colleges and major ideas. The brothers had always known they could talk to their parents but neither of them wanted to disappoint them and Marcus thought that by not wanting to follow in his father’s footsteps, he would be. It never occurred to him that his father would be proud of him being a lawyer, a doctor, anything at all that he wanted to be.
The fall following his senior year, Marcus was on the fast track to Harvard Law. He did his pre-law courses at NYU while taking a minor in psychology to better his skills. It was a lot of work but he managed. Eventually, he was accepted into Harvard Law and graduated there with one of the highest grades that year. It was his father’s proudest moment of him. He moved back to New York but moved into the city and took the bar and a job there. He’d always planned on staying in New York, but when he was younger and didn’t know he had options, he thought it would be upstate, home. Now he knew better and he was enjoying his time at the firm he was working. It was a marathon not a sprint to get where he wanted to be but at twenty-eight, he was made a senior partner, the youngest the firm ever had. It came with all the lovely perks, which Marcus wouldn’t deny he enjoyed, but it also came with a lot more than just the usual work. And as much as Marcus enjoyed it, his heart was already falling out with the long hours and practically no friends. And then a position opened up at NYU to teach law and Marcus jumped at the chance for a change, an exciting new adventure. He stays on at the firm so he can get his students some real world experience whenever he gets a case he can put to good use.
