It wasn’t very often that Tallulah found herself feeling torn. She had always been a woman of certainty who knew what she wanted. There was never any pandering around or long pause for thought in her life. Tally came, saw, and conquered and then surveyed her life with a slight ounce of pride. She liked what she had and felt she had every right to feel proud of everything she had done to get there. She had worked hard, skipped a grade, and worked even harder then to prove herself better than her peers. Now she lived her life doing what she had always dreamt of doing and she balanced that with a side of unpredictable fun that often came when people least expected it to. One minute Tallulah would tell them she had a desk full of paperwork and by the end of the same day she would be on the phone to ask if they fancied spending the following weekend wine tasting in Vermont. Tallulah lived her life and there wasn’t anyone who could say differently. She didn’t, however, find herself staring at her wine glass weighing up the pros and cons of life changing decisions. Yet, here she was, sitting at a now empty table in WD-50 doing just that.
Her dinner companion hadn’t long left; after hours work calling him away too soon. It was just Tallulah now, left to finish off the nearly full bottle of wine that he had ordered for their meal. Of course, Doctor McKie hadn’t touched it since he frequently talked about his sober lifestyle to anyone who didn’t ask. The bottle was for Tallulah, probably in the hopes of sweetening the offer he had presented to her in the five minutes before his cell phone had rang with the call that had whisked him off before dessert. She had known the good Doctor since her college years, when one of his seminars had particularly caught her interest and she had badgered him with enough questions at the end that she had intrigued Doctor McKie enough to hand over his business card back then. Since then he had been a sort of mentor to the young woman, but now he was seeing as more of a peer, as tonight’s offer suggested. Tallulah had never really given much thought to practicing psychiatry solely on those who were classified as criminals before, though she had treated two in her career so far before they had been convicted and moved on to hospitals or wards better suited to their needs.
Tallulah raised the glass of wine to her rose coloured lips and took a long sip of the merlot. She might need more than wine to help with this decision. McKie said he could wait a week for her answer before he would have to offer the position to someone else. A week was hardly any time at all in her world, but it was all she was allowed. Tally was mentally trying to work out the pros and cons of accepting the position when the waiter came by the table, offering the dessert menu. “Perhaps in a few minutes. I’m still full from that wonderful steak.” She said politely with a wide smile. She could have left when Doctor McKie did, but he had already left money for the bill and had insisted on the twenty-seven year old indulging her sweet tooth. Tallulah enjoyed her food, though her passion for fitness made it near impossible to guess that about the young doctor. After he left for the time being, Tallulah went back to nursing her wine glass and staring off into contemplation, forgetting almost entirely about the rest of the diners around her.
