Lethe’s day had so far been one unnecessary kerfuffle after another. She had been rudely awoken two hours too early by a friend of her neighbour’s knocking on the wrong door in a drunken stupor. After that she had to deal with an angry woman who had the wrong phone number but who refused to believe it and kept demanding to speak with her son and then after those two events, Lethe was far from impressed to find that she was out of milk only after she had filled a bowl with her favourite cereal.
Normally, today would be her day off and she could take it easy and check off the never ending to-do list. However the summer months meant that the hours she worked could change and that she was often called in to replace her colleagues when they jetted off on vacation or took some much needed time for relaxation. Lethe hadn’t actually planned her own trip away from the bustling city yet, but she could squeeze it in before school started again. For this week, she was working three extra days to cover for her ticket office buddy who was sunning it up in Hawaii with her boyfriend. At least, that was the information Lethe had been fed at the weekend when her boss had posted the roster up in their little cabin. She didn’t mind covering the extra days since it was more money for her at the end of it, but it did make that to-do list harder to catch up on when she didn’t feel like running around grocery stores or cleaning after spending her day at work.
Lethe went through her routine in a usual scrambled fashion and then made the walk down to The Whitney with her headphones in and her umbrella up. She was at the opposite end of the happiness scale when she walked in and saw her colleague – the one supposed to be on vacation – sitting pretty behind the polished window. The awkward smile of her boss came just seconds after she called down for him and she listened to his ramble with her arms folded across her chest. Apparently he had muddled up the dates in the diary and it was in fact the following week that Lee was needed for. Glaring, swearing at him in a language he couldn’t understand, Lethe threw her hands up in the air and exited the building. One the plus side, she had the day to herself, but on the downside she had just got herself in the mindset for work she was no longer required for. Picking a spot on the damp wall outside the museum, Lethe rested her back against the cool concrete and then lifted her legs to stretch out in front of her. Had she been working, she knew her boss would nag at her for giving off an urchin impression, but she wasn’t working now and she needed somewhere to chill before she decided what to do next. Ignoring the rain beating down on her skin, the raven haired girl plucked her phone from her bag and chewed thoughtfully on her lip. She scrolled through her phone but most of her contacts were out of the city and the rest were mainly study buddies or party people; neither of which were entirely required on a rainy Monday in New York City.
